You said a wall! Now you are moving the goal posts. I am not about to bandy words. You asked, I replied. Israel has a wall, Israel is a country, the wall keeps out the unwanted and it works. Now, what are you not satisfied with?

To be fair, I’m not against walls in some areas. But they are pretty ineffective and treat the symptom, not the cause. We have a cheap labor addiction in this country. Always have. Immigrants will always be wanted.
Bring them in on work visas, in other words, LEGALLY.

How is visa overstays less of a problem than illegal crossings?

001-ramadan.jpg
It's another problem. But it is a bigger problem if we continue to have thousands of people disappear into our country. When you have an oil leak, you stop the leak first, then clean up the mess. No sense in attempting to clean up the oil if there is a steady flow of oil pouring into the same area.

To your picture not directed at me. Far less people are going to take the effort to climb a wall than hop over a fence or walk across an imaginary line.

And again, I think the wall is only part of the solution and not the first thing to address concerning illegal immigration.

Eh, haven’t read this thread because I knew what it is. I maintain that Trump is the worst negotiator in US history. Democrats have done harsh and brutal things on the border in the past, just like Republicans. We can debate whether or things were done in the name of security but it’s really besides the fact. Difference is that Trump brands it as his wall, gets rednecks to chant it and made building a wall as his key presidential issue. But he’s an idiot because it’s not about building a god damn wall. Just increase funding for border security quietly and he would’ve gotten an easy win.

I’m sure we have common ground bc I want a more economical fix for sure. I just envision tighter control of the border and actual entry crossings. But also simplify the actual legal way. Clear cut, verifiable documents, check in protocol for x number of years, and a feasible limit to supply and demand. I also think one felony in this time and your done. Developed a process for long time productive illegals to become official. Collect taxes. Designate companies that want to use this new labor to find legal traceable ag jobs ASAP. If immigrants follow all the protocol it should fast track their ability to bring family over with the same standards. You play by the rules, you get preference. You break the rules, you get deported for good. Make it black and white and simple enough that hard working people can become Americans.....second caveat——they have to want to be American and follow our values and justice system.

Illegal immigration is an evolving issue. Your #1 may be a factual statement, but it does not address the caravans sometimes reaching in the thousands that are coming here knowing all they have to do is bring a child with them.

#2. You're right. The cartel has tunnels under our border today. Don't you think it is easier for Israeli agents to search for and destroy more tunnels because they don't have to use more manpower to fight the Palestinians crossing over a small barrier that works for dogs, not people?

#3. We're not building a wall to thwart an invasion of armies. Just to maintain control over who enters and where people enter. Not really comparable.

Anyone who downplays how bad it is at the border is being willfully ignorant. The same people who complain about the conditions the migrants are subjected to ignore the fact that they are enduring those conditions because of how bad the situation is. I choose to believe the people actually dealing with the crisis than the politicians and news networks that have agendas to protect.

We need to change our asylum laws and start separating children from adults until they have DNA tests that prove they are related. These caravans are not just an American immigration crisis, they are a humanitarian crisis. There is no telling how many children have been taken from their families to be used to get into America. How many of them that were used for far more sinister purposes. How many of them were sold to the cartel in return for them to smuggle people into the U.S. It is a major crisis whether you want believe it or not.
You can't get much more obvious than a caravan. That's because they are seeking asylum legally. They are not sneaking across the border. They are not "illegal immigrants." Our President has conservatives convinced they're Dothraki.Eyeroll

And the solution you suggest involves more separating of families. It's like they're not even people. I guess all lives only matter when the alternative is having black lives matter.

Well, seeing as this has gone from UVa's not visiting the WH to the economy to media bias to merkins to undocumented immigration and who knows what else in between, far be it for me to start a second thread.

I'll be doing this tomorrow.

Make sure to tell them how good you are with words! One thing I have no doubt about is your ability to protest...find a slogan and then beat it into the ground for hours while changing nobody’s opinion, yet feel accomplished. I’d suggest staying home and working your gardening/growing skill....it has merit anddddd results.

Protest on your two months off. Snow is a natural event, being a human snowflake is a human choice.
lol

Good line about snowflakes. I set myself up for that.

But the lol is @ your pathetically underdeveloped understanding of what protest is about. It's pretty clear you've never exercised that right or even paid any attention to it, choosing to sit on the sidelines and take cheapshots at people who get things done instead. Public ed supporters have already advocated, written, called, campaigned, and every other form of sweet, nice asking there is. No one uses protest as their first option. Protesting in the summer or on a Saturday or over there out of the way ISN'T PROTEST.

North Carolina is 32nd in K-12 public education. We are 29th in teacher pay. How about stepping your fvcking game up before demanding more money.
You're bringing a couch potato to a street fight.

You're citing lies and you clearly know nothing about the actual goals, not one of which is unreasonable.

Neither snowflakes nor finger prints are one of a kind. If snowflakes had ability to reason they would arguably know they aren’t unique. In which case, calling people snowflakes is just another played out phrase echoed by the squeaky bitches like Ben Shapiro... Just saying.

These two sentences seem to contradict each other. In one you're saying they aren't unique, and in the next you're saying they... aren't unique. I'm hoping you can unravel this for me, b/c it seems like it might be worth considering if you just got half of it twisted.

Whatever the rest meant, I agree here. I would add that when liberals turn it around and use it on conservatives, it's for the sake of being ironic and for pointing out the hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness among conservatives.

Do you sleep in a hammock?
Don't know or care what that means, either.

If some old school, backward, brainwashed, anti-union rube chimed in to take me to task I'd at least respect their sincerity. You took the bait and trotted out the oldest and dumbest wanking points there are without any actual investment at all. If I endorsed air you'd object to it. I dangle support of public education -- free and accessible to all, as our state's constitution requires -- and you have so little integrity that you'll throw it under the bus if it means taking a swing at me.

For anyone else who might happen to GAML, here are the demands:
  1. Fund Student Services to Meet National Standards, including Professional School Counselors, School Social Workers, School Psychologists, Nurses, and Library Media Coordinators.
  2. $15 Minimum Wage + 5% raise for all school workers + 5% COLA for retirees
  3. Expand Medicaid to improve the health of our students and families
  4. Reinstate state retiree health benefits
  5. Restore advanced degree pay
I'm happy to provide background and explanation for people who actually GAML.

So assuming I wrote they aren’t unique twice, that’d actually be perfectly consistent. But that’s not what I wrote either. The post was intended to contrast the use of the term “snowflakes” and belief in uniquity with the reality of snowflakes and their actual ubiquity.

But ignoring deliberate obtusity, and regardless of you or their political beliefs, it’s a dumb term created to annoy whoever is being argued with. Not sure the origin of the term, but it’s propagated by internet culture And what I’m saying is that it’s time to kill it.

The other thing about the term snowflake is that it is intended to be an attack on the softness of millennials. And while I do think there are cultural differences between generations, they certainly aren’t any more myopic and sensitive than any other generation. Their great grandparents, after all, were offended if a TV network (trigger warning) showed two people sleeping in the same bed on television.

Ah, re-re-re-read it and I got it now. Yes, no objection to those first two statements, either.

I have to defend letsgo's use of the term here. I walked into it.

The origin is actually opposite its more recently revived application. I think it was a carpetbagger term describing pro-slavery hold-outs. (Opposite in political wings, though fragility was still the meaning.) I won't swear I remember that correctly, though.

I think even dumb terms can be used for more sophisticated purposes. Regardless, it's unlikely to go away any time soon, for better or worse (and I'll side w/ worse, as it's hypocritical and divisive when leveled w/o self-awareness).

Who pays for all that shit? The people that have to work 12 months a year and pay for their own health benefits, that's who. And if public schools would stop brain washing our kids, they would not need so much counseling. WTF does a "Library Media Coordinator do anyway?

Eyeroll But you're young and lack common sense. It'll kick in one day.
You are the one with your head in the sand and unable to see the facts in front of you. Your team will always be know as the biggest cheaters in college basketball history. We will never let you forget it.

Not ITT. This is about Trump rocking Obama's economy, mean tweets, the wall and pussy teachers selfishly costing families money.

Fantastic post. Both supporters and detractors of Trump routinely fail to make this argument. He has been largely ineffective in 2 years. He gets credit for taxes, but any republican was gonna make that happen. Outside of that, no legislation of note. Healthcare is still a mess. Infrastructure is just being talked about. The deficit is growing. He had a chance to get $25B for the wall in exchange for DACA and gummed it up. Trump was handed the keys to a Porsche, just needed a driver to take her out. But he can’t get out of 1st gear.

I agree with all this. Immigration is actually slowing down and has been for years. It’s more a talking point than ever before though. Trump is wielding fear and it’s working. If big business thought immigration was bad, you’d actually see change in Washington. But you don’t.

I didn't move any posts lol. We're talking a couple thousand of miles of wall, a lot in isolated areas. You decided to provide miniature versions. You come in with chump change and expect me that to satisfy me. LOL
