They did not want to hurt one of their cash cows in basketball and basketball is where the NCAA makes all of their cash.
Bama in football had games taken away and was placed on Probation for the book scheme where players were selling their books via some kind of Gov. grant or basically getting cash in some manner. But the students were doing the same thing, Nebraska got hit with the same issue.
The NCAA didn't say it's not against the NCAA BY-LAWS because the students participated just like the players, HELL every student in the USA scammed the Gov via this program, Gov. programs are made to be scammed. But they bent over backwards to make sure UNC got off.
The funny thing is I made the same argument in 2007/08, if students are participating also it can't be a "benefit" for the player. We lost like 20 games of wins because of that. On top of that, whilst the students were allowed to take the classes at UNC, I think the classes were created for the players in general, so in a way UNC was guilty, although technically they broke no By-law.
