7th Annual College Basketball Draft

Since I'm a Homer, I've been following this thread to see rhe Arkansas picks.

Surprised to see Ellis and Mark not picked until the FA portion.

These two are gonna be stat getters.

My issue with Arkansas is, there aren't clear-cut standouts. Brazile looks like the closest thing. After that, who's going to put up all-conference type numbers?

El Ellis, Tramon Mark, Khaliff Battle, and Devo Davis are all capable (maybe Davenport, too?). I figure the guards will all have their nights, but there may not be a consistent go-to scorer (i.e. 15+ ppg). Balanced scoring won't lead to all-conference awards, and if it's shaky that someone may miss out on all-conference completely, you might just want to take a sure-thing in a mid-major star

Those guards are capable of putting up big numbers, yes. But, where there's a lot of risk involved in the value of picks, you want to draft someone with a high floor and high upside, if possible. Your guards have reasonably high ceilings, but their floors are kind of modest.

My top 12 guys that were not drafted:

1) Dylan Disu - Texas - Came on strong late and was B12 tourney MVP. I almost pulled the trigger a couple of times but the rest of his team is formidable too and I'm not sure how much he'll be a focal point of the offense
2) J'Wan Roberts - Houston - Dude averaged 10 and 8 and collected 6.1 win shares for a Houston team that needs to fill a void from losing their top 3 scorers
3) Julian Reese - Maryland - I wanted to draft this guy. He's flashed All Big Ten potential but hasn't had the consistency. If he get there this year, we'll all regret it
4) Tristen Newton - UConn - Averaged 10, 5 and 5 and had 4.9 win shares last year. He will outperform a lot of the guys we drafted
5) Berke Buyuktuncel - UCLA - If he was cleared by the NCAA, I would likely have drafted him. He's got star potential on a roster without a clear alpha IMO
6) Steven Ashworth - Creighton - I'm fascinated to see how he blends with Creighton's other great players. He could put up really good numbers
7) Coleman Hawkins - Illinois - Maybe 2nd team All Big Ten. I just couldn't draft him because I can't stand him and he doesn't put up big counting stats
8) Tyler Burton - Nova - Averaged 19 and 7 for Richmond last year. Just not sure how much of an alpha he'll be on a team that returns Justin Moore, Eric Dixon and Mark Armstrong
9) Tyler Wahl - Wisconsin - Some will say that Wisky will go as Hepburn and Crowl go but Wahl is the key. When he was hurt last year, they struggled. If he is healthy, he's got 2nd team All Big Ten upside
T10) Khalif Battle and Devo Davis - Arkansas - @dukedevilz alluded to this earlier when talking about Arkansas. It's just hard to tell who's going to emerge between these guys, Brazile and Tramon Mark. If Battle or Davis do, they'll be a great pick. If not, we were wise not to draft them.
12) Josiah-Jordan James - Tennessee - Part of the three headed monster returning to Tennessee and the only one that's completely healthy right now.

Pretty similar to mine, actually. Here's my 12-man JV roster:

Tyler Burton, Villanova
Tristen Newton, UConn
J'Wan Roberts, Houston
Tamin Lipsey, Iowa State
Olivier Nkamhoua, Michigan
Coleman Hawkins, Illinois
AJ Storr, Wisconsin
Berke Buyuktuncel, UCLA
Devo Davis, Arkansas
Rayshon Harrison, Grand Canyon
Tristan Enaruna, Cleveland State
Demarcus Sharp, Northwestern State

Also, curious to see how Alex Karaban does. His shooting splits last season were top-notch. Just needs a higher usage rate. Feel like AJ Storr has a higher ceiling than anyone else on Wisconsin. That should be a top 25 team.

Last year, my JV team took down 3 teams (Jimbo, lurker, GE Nole). Takes a little bit of luck to pull that off (i.e. taking Keyonate Johnson). My goal, like last year, is to beat one team.

I added my 12th guy so I can do the same.

I really wanted Roach in the late rounds. If Duke goes far, I think he can have a Quinn Cook type senior season. Lots of upside in that pick.

Judah Mintz, Jesse Edwards, JJ Starling, and Kadary Richmond. lol that's crazy.

I'm not sure what to make of Roach. He averaged 16 ppg during Duke's last 10 games last year; he was way more productive than Proctor, who averaged around 11 ppg during the same stretch. But at the same time, Proctor's usage is sure to go up. And McCain and Foster are going to want a fair amount of touches, too... And then there's always a chance that Roach makes the All-Tournament team or All-Region team.

Considering he was taken in Round 10 that's not bad value at all.

You ripped me last year for drafting Roach and he ended up being pretty good.

You know I have receipts, right? I was correct in saying it was a bad value. The issue was taking Roach in Round 5.

4.2 total points would have been the least valuable player on my roster. Roach in round 10 or so is fine. Last year, I felt like his ceiling was 3rd Team All-Conference. That's really poor value for Round 5.

Thankfully, no team can embarrass itself as badly as @WeAreDePaul embarrassed himself with this exchange. We all have a little breathing room now.

Apology accepted.

I think I have a lower ceiling than most but maybe a higher floor than some.

I don’t really know what to think about my team. I’ll let you know later after I see how they start the year.

I think Dukedevils has the best roster, followed by boilerzz, followed by me

I like my roster. I don't think I have as much All-American potential as I've had the last two years, but there's still a few guys who are capable. I like how I closed the draft: Baylor Scheierman, Dalton Knecht, Jalen Bridges, Bruce Thornton... feel like there's a great chance one of those guys earns 1st Team All-Conference.

It takes a bit of skill to do this well, projecting player development and strategizing the value of players in each round. But, we can't underestimate how much lucks also plays a factor. Not a single pundit was talking about Tyler Kolek as a potential All-American last year. There's always a few guys that seemingly come from nowhere to have a monster year. Unexpected results are always going to be a major element in this draft.

That's a fair assessment, IMO. 4 mid-majors on your roster will almost always afford you a higher floor. You should have a great shot at ending on the podium.

I feel I have a lot of all conference guys

And 2 guys in Wade Taylor and Terrence Shannon who are both serious contenders for All-American honors.

Seems like just about every year the champion of this league has at least 2 All-Americans.
