*Official* 2017-2018 B1G In-Season Thread

oh by the way these are the teams top scorers
SO Cook
SO Bohannon
FR Garza
SO Moss
FR Nunge who led the team in scoring with 18 tonight.
SO Pemsl
JR Baer.

these all return Ellingson just returned from a Concussion. as did Kriener.

what you were expecting these 18-19 year old players to play like Seniors?
Were you? To me that's the better question. You picked Iowa to win 23 games. Win 12 conference games. Be a 7 seed in the NCAAT.
You keep pointing to how young Iowa is............And they are. But then why the high expectations from you, before the season started? You pegged this team as winning 23 games; 12-6 in the Big 10. You projected no worse than a 7-seed. Am I missing something? You were really high on this team that is full of freshman and soph's. But now that they are 3-11 in the conference, you are blaming most of this on their youth. Which makes no sense.

Keep being you Gil.

does this mean that the only thing that matters to you is BT Championships and trips to the FF.

or would you prefer to have Lick back he did have a good defense. but he only won 15 BT games in 3 seasons.

I would hope it’s all about championships and final fours. The rest is for losers.

replacing Joks stats were not a big deal and the fact that this team is avg'ing more ppg shows that.
Cook went from 12.3 ppg to 15.7 ppg
Bohannon went from 10.9 ppg to 13.7 ppg
Garza came in is avg'ing 11 ppg
Moss went from 6..5 ppg to 10.9 ppg
those 4 account for 21.6 ppg vs the loss of Jok's 19.9 ppg

3 point shooting Jok was 2nd to Bohannon in made and % and Bohannon is on pace to make more 3's than he did as a FR at a higher %
Jok also led the team in TO's pg. @ 2.5 tpg, Iowa does not need that also Jok was not a defensive threat either, So Jok leaving is not the problem.

And yet you guys suck. You’re a statsitical anomaly, I guess.

this year has happened under
Lute
Miller
Davis
and every time Iowa has had a very good season
Lute 5 wins then shared the BT Championship the next season
Miller won 4 games then went undefeated and a BT Championship
Davis 5 wins then back to the NCAAT.

only the chicken littles are crying the SKY IS FALLING. THE SKY IS FALLING.
next years lineup
PG JR 6'0 Bohannon backup 6'5 4* RSFR PG Connor
SG FR 6'6 top 50 4* Wieskamp backup 6'4 SR Ellingson/6'7 JR Dailey
SF JR 6'5 Moss backup SR 6'7 Wagner
PF JR 6'9 top 40 4* Cook backup 6'8 JR Pemsl
C SO 6'11 4* Garza backup so 7'0 Nunge who scored 18 vs OSU
the additions of Connor and Wieskamp will be a major improvement in the defense.
with another summer in the weight room Garza and Nunge will only get bigger and better.

Iowa will not fire a coach that won 20+ games in 4 straight seasons and had 6 straight winning seasons till this season. the only BT Coach that can claim that is Izzo of MSU,

SO why fire him over just 1 bad season in 7 seasons?

Ohio State just fired the winningest coach in their history after one bad season and the only reason it was bad, was because their best player was out. He won 20+ in every season he was there and 10+ B10 games for 12 straight seasons before last year.

Firing Mcaffery is probably the right thing to do

You forgot to mention we didn’t even make the NCAA tournament the last 2 years and Coach Holtmann had to scramble to even field a complete team. Not to mention the horrible attitude the team demonstrated the last few years and the bad apples on the team that had to be invited not to return.

Iowa fans still have this fantasy where the landscape is still the same as the 1980s.

Back then Iowa was a player in the state of Michigan where there was still talent leftover after M/MSU got their pieces. That is no longer the case. The state of Michigan is a shell of itself in producing hoop talent.

Iowa was also a player in Illinois back then. Now all of the blue bloods get every good player in Illinois. The Illini get the second level group (which isnt bad) and then the rest is like the state of Michigan.

So where does Iowa go to get kids? Who wants to go play in Iowa? No major city nearby. Not exactly a swag athletic program. Doesnt have the pageantry of tumbleweed spots like Kansas or Kentucky.

Fran has done decent for what they have to offer.

FWIW-Matta ran the bad apples off.

A few totally random thoughts from being at the Breslin Center today...

1) Haas could've been called for 10+ offensive fouls today, guy was a bully all game long and it was equally impressive/frustrating. Seeing him take aside and congratulate Schilling on his defense post-game was cool.
2) winning that game without Ward or JJJ playing significant minutes is insane
3) The Izzone has fallen off a cliff from what it once was. Totally embarrassing crowd today. But everyone made up for it in the final 5 mins of the game.
4) This team feels like losing in the opening round, winning the National Championship, and everything in between all have equal odds...nothing would shock me. This team when playing at it's best is the best team in the country.
5) I need to make it a point to get back to East Lansing more often

I find myself spending more time here after a loss than on KHC. Not a fan of getting trolled by IU fans who have no basis for trolling but it's still better than Purdue nitwits who think the sky is falling because Purdue is "only" 23-4, having lost those 4 games by a total of 11 points and with 3 of the 4 in the top 12 of KenPom.

I know it happens to pretty much every fanbase but it is still pretty embarrassing.

Iowa is no OSU, can't just fire a coach for one bad season and expect things to turn out like they did for you all. Heck we could end up with someone like Gard whom will slowly deflate Wisconsin basketball from top4 to nothing.

Re: the Izzone - Are they feeling defensive about the rape coverup allegations or were they just extra chippy today. It seemed there was an over the top amount of booing and spewing profanity than I remember hearing from them.

Purdue is still the best in the b10 imo. Not by a ton or anything but I think they are still at the top.

Totally agree with #4. I have no idea how far MSU will go. I’ll probably go somewhere in between and pick them losing in the sweet 16 or elite 8

Your players had a forearm/elbow in his back pushing and shoving him out of the lane all game. The fact that you're complaining about how the refs handled Haas is absolutely hilarious.

Absolutely nothing to do with the allegations.

The Izzone seemed less chippy than ever today, they've clearly lost the edge they/we had for a LONG time. Place may as well have been a December non-conference game until the final few minutes. No offensive chants or anything intimidating at all. Pretty disappointing.

Haas got away with elbows on offense almost every play. Ehh whatever. MSU won the basketball game

Yeah, totally agree. Izzone has lost its luster for sure. Idk what he is talking about

Wait...do Purdue fans seriously think they got the short end of the stick with calls in that game..?

I'm not even really complainining...we won the game. Just an observation. As I said, it was more impressive than anything. The guy is a beast and a bully, in a good way.

One? Last year Iowa was 19-15. THat's not a bad season? He's 67-73 overall in the Big 10. I mean to be 6 games under .500 for your career usually means more than ONE bad season.

Only other coach that can claim 6 straight winning seasons is Izzo? Huh? Not sure if you mean overall, or Big 10. But I'm assuming overall. Since Iowa hasn't had 6 straight winning Big 10 seasons. They were .500 in 2013/14. Plus, I mean Matta at OSU had 11 straight winning seasons until last year. And Overall........Hell even Tom Crean finished his past 6 years with winning records, overall.

Fran is average. And thst's being nice.

Purdue is still just as dangerous as they were a few days ago. How many teams could play OSU and MSU back to back and only lose with last second shots? Not many. Those games could have gone either way. I expect both Purdue and MSU to go a long way in both the B1G and NCAA tourneys and either could win them. Would love to see the Buckeyes keep playing hard and surprise a couple tournament teams too.

No problem with MSU winning today but the complaints about Haas are completely off base- MSU frontline should have fouled out in 10 minutes. No player in the country puts up with what Haas deals with every game. Just blatant shoving gets no call - ridiculous.

This. The second foul called on him was laughable.

Blatant shoving was all Haas. Guy leans back at 45 degree angle on the defender and elbows him out of the way in slow motion every single time he gets the ball. Then he looks to Painter and whines anytime the whistle doesn't blow.

Watching Haas abuse guys all game long and then JJJ and Ward getting called for ticky tacky stuff is a joke. If those two guys play any minutes at all this game isnt even close.

Again, not really complaining. Haas is a beast and plays B1G basketball at it's finest. But Purdue fans complaining about the the refs is LOL funny.

I think he's the hardest guy to officiate in college basketball. There is no doubt he's fouled 20-30 times per game. There's also no doubt he could be called for double digit fouls each game. He's just so damn big and strong that people have to hack him to stop him and he moves people just by raising his arm.

He's a monster. Even bigger in real life than I expected. Anytime he got the ball in the paint it was almost a given that he'd score

Physically, you might have to go back to Shaq at LSU to find a player with his dimensions. Too bad he doesn't have Shaq's athleticism. Thank God he doesn't have Shaq's free throw form.

Pretty sure it was an MSU fan complaining about the reffing- I was just replying. If Haas made the offensive move that 99% of college players are allowed to make every time, including every MSU big, which is the blatant banging of the defensive player - he would score 50 points a game and the opposing bigs would be in the hospital. He shouldn't be penalized for being bigger and stronger than anybody on the floor. Kudos to him for maintaining his composure..As far as whining by players - you might want to focus on Ward who pouts about every call before looking at Haas.

The game was officiated fine. But no, Haas shouldn't have been called for 10+ offensive fouls. That is just absurd considering you guys were pushing on his lower back all game.

All I was saying was Haas could be called for an offensive foul every time he touches the ball in the paint and that's equally impressive/frustrating. It's particularly frustrating for a home crowd when Ward and JJJ are getting lame touch fouls and riding the bench in foul trouble the entire game while Haas is out there abusing guys. I prefer the physical side of the game, as most B1G fans do. But let it be physical for everyone, not just Haas because he's bigger.

Again, just an observation. Not even complaining about the refs. MSU won that game. Haas is a monster that should be feared by all.
