UNC & Duke Fans

If you played the UK/UL game the same time as UNC/Duke, take away the viewers in NC and KY which game do you think will get more national viewers? It won’t be UK/UL.
Because of media hype, plain and simple. People have been told to care by ESPN, so they think they do. What people who arent in the rivalry think about the rivalry means dick. Internally, the rivalry between UK/UofL is hotter than UNC/Duke. Nationally, the Duke/UNC rivalry gets more play because of inherent bias, and Louisville not being as consistently in the Top 10 as the 3 of us all are. "Our rivalry is better because a guy in Idaho watched!" Laughing

I would say that Duke-UNC is appropriately hyped most years. They’ve combined for like 23 Final Fours and 9 national titles in the last 30 years. No other 2 programs combined can come close. No other program has been as good as either of them during that same timeframe.

I’d second this. No hate, but I don’t find the amount of people talking about the game as much as Bilas and company purport, and I travel a decent amount outside of Kentucky. Even if it is just based on what ESPN wants everyone to believe, that’s ok . . . It doesn’t make it so. It’s just an agenda nobody can do anything about. Ultimately no biggie.

It’s like today’s advertisers using nothing but mixed couples in commercials. They’re trying to normalize something that is not as common in real life and Joe & Sally Punchclock know that, but that doesn’t stop the media from trying.

I find this whole thing with thinking, and trying to convince others, the rivalries are the same (outside of the respective areas) odd. I think it is more because of BBN's insecurities. They are historically the best basketball program in the country. However, that isn't enough. They have to somehow fool themselves into thinking they are the best at everything. Not sure what's up with that.

I don’t think it’s the best rivalry. Too one sided. The dislike for one another’s fans is arguably one of the best.

Outside of the states of Kentucky, North Carolina and Indiana no one gives a rip about college basketball in any meaningful numbers.

I remember being in Blacksburg VA, mid 2000s, on spring break. My buddy from HS went to Va Tech and we went out there to party for a week. Lol I know I know "who goes to Blacksburg on spring break." Hokies were at Cameroon Indoor and beat Duke. We were at some big bar, packed, TVs everywhere with the game on. Me and my other fellow UK buddy and about 5 Hokies were actually watching and cared when VT won. No one else there, all students, gave a single ****.

So when they go on about nationally....youre talking about bandwagon CBB "fans" who tune in and only began seeing whats going in CBB for March gambling purposes, usually people in pro markets. They don't "care" at all. Theyve been told ad nauseum it's a big game, so they tune in so they can take part in something theyve been told is part of the sports cultural lexicon.

Its like saying these people's opinions matter on horse racing because they watched the Kentucky Derby.

Yeah I think there’s something to this. If you look at where Duke and Carolina are and how good they’ve been for most of this boards entire lives then I don’t know how you wouldn’t agree that it’s the biggest and most anticipated rivalry game in the country. Everything about those two programs since the freaking 1980’s is better than everybody else.

Yeah, because everybody cares about Kentucky Louisville outside of the state of Kentucky Eyeroll

I saw this at the theater. I was around 9 or 10 and w older kids. I cried, and was absolutely frightened the older kids would see. They didn’t. Phew.
I've got the new one but haven't watched it yet. The 10 year old in me can't wait, but the grown up has to make time.

I feel like a Life cereal commercial saying that.

You are correct, not one person does. But everybody watches Duke/ Carolina ;-)

Lol- thanks for making my point about BBN being conspiracy loons. "People think what ESPN tells them to think!"

Here are a few of the reasons that Carolina Duke is the best rivalry in sports:
1- both teams are almost always very good to great.
2- highly competitive. Before the game last night, the last 100 games were 50-50.
3- proximity- only 8 miles apart makes this a real, tangible rivalry among the players, not just the fans
4- visibility- because Carolina and Duke play in a great conference, people also watch games that these 2 play that aren't against each other. People watch Carolina play UVA or Duke play VT or FSU or whoever. But the whoevers in the ACC are also pretty well known outside of the ACC, whereas in the shithole that is the SEC, no one cares to watch UK play much of anybody.
5- play twice a year during the time when non-CBB-first people are actually paying attention to CBB. Most everyone in the country is watching football when UK plays Louisville.

The most concerning thing about this post is that you went to a college bar on spring break and watched a CBB game not involving your team instead of trying to get laid by the college girls. Winking
