I was just wondering when your team loses to the other are you surprised or is every game a coin toss in your mind? I think most UK fans expect to beat Louisville every time and are surprised if we don’t. I can’t imagine not really having a real sense of what will likely happen each game.

I always at the very least, think Duke has a decent shot to win and plenty of times I expect Carolina to lose.

I felt going into the game last night that Carolina should win, but also realized that it would only take a really good game from someone not named Barrett or Reddish for Duke to win.

I think 2016/17 and 2017/18 sum it up perfectly. The 2016/17 unc team was clearly the better team, but Duke went 2-1 vs them. Just like last year where Duke was clearly the better team. But unc went 2-1 vs them. No one should ever be overly confident going into the game, even if you have every reason to be.

Yeah, never really feel confident. I actually felt decent about both matchups this year (even before Zion went down). However, there is no doubt either team can usually win.

The most marketable thing about their rivalry outside of Tobacco Road is the hardware and the parity, so I wouldn’t expect either fan base to look down on the other’s program. If any fans do then idk what they expect other than breaking off and joining the NBA.

I think the Duke UNC rivalry gets more hype because of the back and forth nature of the series. And some media bias. But its still a great series no question. I say UK-UofL is the better rivalry because it is just so much more hateful and nasty. But OP is right, ours is never a question of who daddy is. Ohio State Michigan gets plenty more hype in football nationally than UK-UofL, but honestly its overall very similar to our rivalry. Michigan hasnt held a candle to OSU for years.

Fan bases make a rivalry. Kentucky is .500 against Mississippi State in football. We arent rivals.


Duke and North Carolina would be rivals regardless of the back and forth nature of the series. That merely adds to making it a great rivalry. But isnt nearly as nasty or hateful as UK UofL. Nor is Ohio Ohio State Michigan as nasty as Alabama Auburn. Hell it isnt as nasty as Clemson South Carolina if we're being honest.

Beat me to it, which is why I don’t think a rivalry should be defined mostly by fan hatred. It’s a factor, sure, but I don’t see many making the argument that KU v Mizzou was bigger than UNC v Duke when they were still playing it.

I think UK/UL is a mixture. We're close in hatred while being traditionally relevant.

If you played the UK/UL game the same time as UNC/Duke, take away the viewers in NC and KY which game do you think will get more national viewers? It won’t be UK/UL.

UK UL would be on CBS, Duke UNC would be on ESPN. I agree with your post.

Also, I blame UL for this. UL is not on the level of UK, UNC, Duke. Viewers want to watch competitive games.

I can attest I didn’t watch the ACC game last night. Personally I don’t mind whether UK/UL gets as much hype or not. I prefer the likely outcome route, which is probably why it doesn’t hold as much interest elsewhere.

I’d almost prefer it to be a closed gym and let them just have at it, like Rocky & Apollo. You can have the constant carnival barking, James Brown singing, dancers, etc.
