My guess is Knight was so proud, he would still be hanging around today with mediocre teams.

So a step up IMO.

THis is actually a good question; Though entirely by mistake. OP isn't that smart.

Anyways...Often wondered how things would be had Knight retired. Unfortunately, we will never know. Two worse things to ever happen to IU basketball:

1. Mike Davis leading IU to the title game

2. How Knights tenure ended.

Smart enough to know you couldn't ref an ant race.

I always had respect for Knight, the coach... Knight, the person, was an arrogant asshole.
He did more with less talent than any coach in history. His personality & antics ruined it for him.

Agreed. I respect his ability to win, but man, there was some crazy footage from the early 80s, right up to when he was canned. He went insane. I think he lost touch with what year it was.

I agree---somewhat. Knight done a ton of good. He was arrogant. But very, very generous. And caring. Unfortunately for him, that part was very seldom seen.

Do you think the "Me" generation style of basketball ended Knights career?

He was a huge team guy. And in todays basketball, kids want to be stars, and good coaches ride that wave.

i think Knight and Calhoun are the two greatest basketball minds of my lifetime
i do not think the "Stalin" mentality Knight had would work today, as a matter of fact it had quit working in his latter years of coaching

My father in law was an IU grad & season ticket holder. I’ve heard stories about some of the stuff he did for charity. Unfortunately his antics & language ruined all that.

Yep. That is the conclusion I draw on him. And I liked Bob and his style. It worked back in the day, especially when kids stayed 4 years, and transferring was not common.

Yes....very unfortunate. I had the luxury of meeting Coach Knight numerous times. Very, very gracious person. But yes, he was/could be, a complete ass.

It was undoing, Not sure there was ever a better basketball mind than Bobby Knight. Absolute genius.

The other question I was asking myself, if Bob and Indiana had ended on good terms, who would Bob have hand picked to take over the program. That would have been interesting.

as i stated Knight and Calhoun are the two greatest basketball minds in my lifetime
i never liked either one of them, but facts are facts
could you imagine if Calhoun had spent his entire career at a school like Duke, UNC or UK with all their resources, he would have set records that may never be broken

so is the question if Bobby Knight wasnt physically harming players or if IU ignored it and kept him anyways? there is a big difference there

Neither. He sticks around, and it doesn't end badly, how does IU look today.

IMO, it was a good time to part ways with him. He wasn't leaving and would be looking over their shoulder forever. He needed to move on. He had to much influence over that program.

Knight was finished a few years before he was fired
his antics allowed IU to move on

IU has had a very hard time getting a good honest coach
i think they have found that in Miller
Meh---not really. IU allowed those antics when Knight was winning titles, going to FF's, etc, etc..It only became an issue when he stopped doing that. IU got exactly what they(we) deserved. I don't think KNight was "finished". Hell look at what he done at Texas Tech. His coaching ability was just fine. It was his INABILITY to adapt to the kids of this era that was his undoing. To this day, if I had to choose one coach---It would be him.

I think Miller was an absolute home run, hire.

I know this is the general consensus, and I understand why people think this. But, the truth is, he had made multiple comments in 2000 that the team he would have in 2002 (the year Davis took them to championship game) was going to win the 6th banner in 2002. If davis was able to get that team to the championship game....no telling what was possible if Knight was the coach!?

Of course, it's also possible that he would have ran off 4 of the players and finished 20 and 11 for the season. But, that 2002 run shows that he was still able to recruit teams talented enough to win. The reason IU had a few down years from 93 to 2002 was simply because he completely lost interest in recruiting. He would rather have been fishing in Montana then to be on a couch dealing with 18 yr olds. However, right around 99/00 he started to make an effort again....and built a team good enough to win it.

Also, keep in mind that the 2002 run wasn't just because they got a ton of bracket breaks.

They had to play probably the best team of that past 10 years in the sweet sixteen.

Elite 8 was a lucky break in playing Kent state..

Final 4 they played a top 3 or 4 team that year in Oklahoma

Then the best Maryland team of my lifetime.

Gonna snatch Brad Stevens away from the Celtics, done deal. Laughing

Only Hoosier fans can tell you that their basketball program is more prestigious than the Boston Celtics and the NBA.

You're missing the only reason a bunch of iu fans thought they had a chance....apparently Steven's had made a comment once that IU was his dream job. Of course, this was before the NBA, but when you hear that, it's not crazy to wonder if they have a chance.

Now, the crazy part was after hearing 100 times that he was loving it in the NBA to still think its going to happen.

i agree on Miller

Knight's antics gave IU the excuse they needed to part ways, as the other poster stated Knight had way too much power

What did he do at Texas Tech? Certainly nothing impressive.

that is the thing, how many of those players would have put up with Knight's BS
BCG tried the "Stalin" approach at UK, we seen how that worked out

Yeah, that's something we won't ever know, and its possible some would have left. But, I honestly don't think that team would have had any defections those 2 tears. All of the main players were upper class men who all for some reason desperately wanted to play for him. If TT would have immediately hired him, I'd bet that a few might have went with him. The only player who I guess might have left was Jefferies, but with it only being his 2nd season at iu....I doubt it.

from what i remember he almost transferred out after his freshman season

Jefferies, IMO, would have never had that good of a tourney, if Bob is coaching. JJ could play. Bob turned him in a NBA 6th man.
