Illinois and IU fans existence relies purely on the success of their athletic departments. More so than most other fanbases. Not sure why that is but they are the biggest chest thumpers in the big ten. This new NIL wild west appeals to their sensibilities to a T. They couldn't field winning programs the right way for years, so they feel they've finally been able to cut past all the hard stuff that are hallmarks of successful college programs: good coaching, program and culture building, etc. NIL is a nice shortcut for the desperate programs (and especially the fans) yearning to finally be relevant again. Then I think how pathetic it is for some of those fans for their identities to be wrapped up in their favorite college sports team when you simply pay the kids to come to your school. How lame is that? That's not what college sports is about.
This is so reactionary and salty. You just projected a strawman of two Big Ten fan bases in an attempt to make them any different than Michigan, MSU or Wisconsin fans simply because (as is evident from your posting history) you don’t like them. Like, what on Earth do the first sentences even mean? Illinois and Indiana have plenty going for them as schools, college towns and alumni networks outside of sports. I mean, Illinois ranks above Purdue in almost every academic ranking I’ve ever seen, is the implication that it’s some Big Ten version of an SEC athletic cut throat?? Lol.

NIL is just how it is … I can’t speak for IU, but Illinois has lost plenty of recruitments over the years where they likely weren’t willing to dish out illegal cash. I’d rather have it out in the open, if it’s happening at all. And it was.

Yet you hired a coach who had assistants under FBI investigations at his previous coaching spot. Let’s not act like Illinois wasn’t willing to play dirty before NIL. You’re hyped about it because your sketchy AD is “all in” at providing cash payments to players for their services. You may like it, but I don’t have to. There’s a way to compensate players without comprising the competitive integrity of the college model. Illinois disguising this as charity work is just funny to me.

Who cares? Not me. Every team cheats to a degree. I'd rather be the best.

Purdue will either figure out that they need NIL and you'll backtrack, or you'll die on the vine, play your little violin, and whine.

Illinois lost games for years because we weren’t willing to pay recruits where the market was set at.

Apparently their memory only goes back so far...

Every team cheats to a degree? Don’t think that’s close to accurate. Plenty do of course but plenty don’t.

How many do right now? A handful at best? Purdue will be fine and you’re naive if you think we won’t be.
I don’t expect you fall to bottom in the league or anything.

Maybe fine means worse than Illinois in your book. That’s fine by me, and likely going to be true.

That wouldn’t surprise me at all.
I think in 5 years the conference hierarchy will be

Tier 1: Michigan Illinois

Tier 1.5- Indiana Ohio St- depends on how good of a coach Woodson is and how much money OSU put into their basketball program

Both could be tier 1, but if things don’t go correctly they could also be tier 2

Tier 2- Purdue Wisconsin Mich St

Tier 3- Iowa Rutgers Maryland

Tier 4- Penn St Minnesota Nebraska

Tier 5- Northwestern

Is it any surprise it's mainly Purdue fans crying after they lost out on a recruit?

I don’t think it’s unique to Purdue fans. I think most fanbases would have similar reactions if they lost a recruit for $800k when the player was clearly bought but hey you do you.

Before now, there were obviously cases where B1G programs lost out on recruits when shady shit went down but it was never clear exactly what the numbers/perks looked like. Now that it’s out in the open, its going to obviously raise more eyebrows.

Wouldn’t you rather it be out in the open?

At least now you know forsure it’s about the money…

What does he want exactly? I mean he got shots ….. what’s the problem?
His camp was mad he didn’t hit the shots he got and blames it on us.

We consistently utilized him in our offense even with poor percentages.

Sounds like MSU is the spot for wing stranger Micah Parrish from Oakland. Averaged 12/6 while making all defensive team in his conference and has 3 years eligibility.

Not exactly a star add but we badly need wing depth and this guy won’t be a diva plus he can check.

Is he going pro or transferring?

I only see him on a few mocks, and that’s as a second rounder.

What the hell. Northwestern?
His mom played there and he was a ball boy there growing up.

The sentiment is that he can “do his thing” in that offense more. Again, he consistently was given opportunity after opportunity for us. He was the minute leader. He was better defensively than we thought. But those percentages are ugly and he really struggled to do anything driving.

We’re heard his camp is also irritated we made him guard the opposing teams best wing every game.

Because he won't see that quality in the NBA on a nightly basis? Talk about charmin soft.

Going from playing for Izzo to Collins would be… interesting… and a mistake.

Still up in the air. If he transfers I anticipate it to a place where he can get a lot shots. Northwestern is the perceived leader.
What would you say the odds of him of transferring vs going pro?

If he goes to Northwestern the kid is an idiot…

Kids have been paid to play for decades. The only difference is that they now get paid a free market value. I don’t understand why people would prefer to watch a game where people are taken advantage of rather than paid what they’re worth.
They aren’t getting paid what they are worth. They are getting paid by crazy ass alumni and billionaires regardless of worth. The entities that reap the billion + from the tv deals (the schools) are not kicking in a dime. Again I’m cool with the players making money. I’m just losing interest in the idea of rooting for a minor league team wearing my teams jersey. And yes I know it’s not “new” and I’ve been losing interest for a while and this just accelerates the process. I’m not sure why alumni in particular would care that the team happens to wear Purdue on the jersey. I’ll stick with some pro sports viewing going forward and playing more golf. Maybe look into getting a fast dog. 😀

You’re worth what the market pays you.

The fast dog is a worthy investment. A fat, slow one is too.

Portal/NIL will ruin, has ruined, CBB. I cannot disagree with this. Kids are not getting paid what they are worth----Unless of course a person feels Nigel Packs presence at Miami will make the University $800k??

I've never been for kids getting paid, and never will be. The amenities these kids are afforded is insane. But that argument falls on deaf ears, and isn't worth the time.

Also getting a kick out of this newfound arrogance out of Illini fans crowning themselves as leaders of the BIG while doing nothing of significance to back it up. Maybe losing early in the dance is a thing now.

Because there is no legitimate argument against allowing people to earn money for their profession while in college when literally every other student can.

Wrong- you get paid by the market by a perception of worth maybe. Your true worth is a different thing. Ford Motor paid Nasser millions as CEO to basically squander billions of dollars in a few short years. His worth was a negative to the shareholders. Just guessing that a lot of these players will perform at similar levels as Nasser. I may not watch CBB as much but I may keep tabs on the drama unfolding in locker rooms and social media due to the new landscape. IUs message boards should be a blast. 😂

If Miami were to happen to win a Natty will it say Miami or LifeWallet?

There’s no valuation for what a player is worth when there’s no salary cap or precedent, so he’s worth what he’s paid.

It would say “Miami - suck it Purdue.”
