This is so reactionary and salty. You just projected a strawman of two Big Ten fan bases in an attempt to make them any different than Michigan, MSU or Wisconsin fans simply because (as is evident from your posting history) you don’t like them. Like, what on Earth do the first sentences even mean? Illinois and Indiana have plenty going for them as schools, college towns and alumni networks outside of sports. I mean, Illinois ranks above Purdue in almost every academic ranking I’ve ever seen, is the implication that it’s some Big Ten version of an SEC athletic cut throat?? Lol.Illinois and IU fans existence relies purely on the success of their athletic departments. More so than most other fanbases. Not sure why that is but they are the biggest chest thumpers in the big ten. This new NIL wild west appeals to their sensibilities to a T. They couldn't field winning programs the right way for years, so they feel they've finally been able to cut past all the hard stuff that are hallmarks of successful college programs: good coaching, program and culture building, etc. NIL is a nice shortcut for the desperate programs (and especially the fans) yearning to finally be relevant again. Then I think how pathetic it is for some of those fans for their identities to be wrapped up in their favorite college sports team when you simply pay the kids to come to your school. How lame is that? That's not what college sports is about.
NIL is just how it is … I can’t speak for IU, but Illinois has lost plenty of recruitments over the years where they likely weren’t willing to dish out illegal cash. I’d rather have it out in the open, if it’s happening at all. And it was.
