They say teams take the personality of their coach and slappies take the personality of their team, so it comes as no surprise Gil doesnt understand the importance of defense as an alarming lack of defense is what has now lead to Iowa looking like theyll miss their 2nd straight tournament despite being loaded with offensive firepower up and down the roster.

it doesn't matter if a 7'3 player can't score or rebound there is a big problem.
Who said he can’t score or rebound? He’s rebounding just fine and just because he doesn’t score much, it doesn’t mean he can’t.

in the past Fran's team have been very good on defense, the defense is being hindered by all the youth
right now there are 3 SO starting, 1 RSJR and 1 freshman starting, although that may change to 4 SO and 1 freshman starting from here on out.

then why did it go down as all the teams except for Indiana and PSU all won. that Iowa has played

Your hoop acumen tells me you comprehend numbers incorrectly.

If your SOS goes from say 140 to 127 overnight, then you interpret such movement as being worse.

I think this is user error, not computer error.

The past must not include Iowa because they’ve sucked on that end since he’s been there. Best finish on Kenpom is 24 in AdjD. Includes a couple +100 and 200 finishes.

No, I get it. Fran doesnt emphasize defense at all and is all offense and therefor so are you.

Until he or you realizes defense is literally 50% of the game, you are going to keep posting all of these good offensive stats and wonder why Iowa keeps losing. This isnt something Im willing to argue with you about, just giving you a fact.

that 24th was when Fran had 4 senior starters and 1 junior starter,

experience of the players dictate their level of defensive ability. not to mention the health of said players, both Ellingson and Bohannon are coming off ankle injuries which slowed them down. the 2 main players playing the point having ankle injuries does not = sterling defensive play,

this group is still learning how to play as a team the injuries kept this group from playing or practicing as a team from day 1, this has hurt Iowa and it showed.

like I said at the beginning of the season Fran had 5 returning starters, 6 more returning with playing experience and they were adding a pair of ESPN top 100 players and 7'0 Nunge who has the height with Garza which Iowa did not have last season. till Garza got hurt and lost his starting spot he had these for stats
13.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg 2.5 bpg and was leading the team in all 3 catagories
now after coming off the bench and getting healthy these are his stats
17.9 mpg, 10.1 ppg 4th on the team, 6.5 rpg leads the team, 1.4 bpg leads the team shooting 56.9% from the field, 35.7% from 3 and has raised his FT% from 42% to 57.7%

my preseason prediction for Garza were these
20 mpg, 7-8 ppg, 6-7 rpg. made no prediction on Blocks or where he would stand in scoring on the team, right now he has passed my main projection of scoring and where he would be as far as sitting in the rebounding team wise.

as a ex AAU BB coach I know full well how much defense plays into winning and losing. I also understand how much youth and inexperience plays a role in poor defense. [and how much lack of practicing as a group plays as well.

sorry but this group has not been practicing as a unit from day 1 because of all the injuries and illinesses. Connor is done for the year and is now taking a RS Year, this is where SO 6'7 Dailey who avg'd 7.7 mpg in 12 games played last season, is making a very solid impact by playing the 1-2-3 providing valuable minutes in backing up Bohannon

to date these are Dailey's stats
15.6 mpg, 5.9 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.5 apg shooting
44.9% from the field, 42.5% from 3 and 78.9% from the FTL,

Dailey is the biggest surprise this season

i was hoping Eastern would provide more...looks overwhelmed on the court. That said the rest of the rotation is looking very solid. The @Minny and @Mich games are looking very very important next week regarding BIG champ hopes.

Gil with all this yapping about Iowa-----And yet here they sit----0-3.RollLaugh

Totally agree. If Haarms isn't averaging 10+ points per game by February, this Purdue team is in real trouble. No real offensive threats in the lineup currently, and could use someone stepping up and actually scoring on a consistent basis.
Laughing

Who transferred? Also theres a decent chance MSU goes in dry. I just want to see if we match up Bruno on Ward and if so how well he holds up.
We had Dwayne Hoskins out of Bullis High School all set to be our #1 QB this year. A 5-star QB that lives near me. He signed with the Terps and then suddenly went to Ohio State. This changed everything and Pigrome and Hill moved up to #1 and #2.

One of the most impressive things about this Minnesota team is that Bakary Konate has managed to play four years of high-major basketball without mastering how to catch a basketball that is moving.
A-****en-Men. Although he has played solidly tonight, he has the worst hands I've ever seen. Pitino had him on the football field early in his career, catching passes, to try to improve his hands. I think he gave up on that.

Feel bad for the kid, because he seems like a guy who is always playing hard and putting himself in the right spots, but catching the ball and making a fluid move toward to basket has just never been in his arsenal.

If Illinois could start games like they finish, they'd only have a couple losses. Glad we fought back, but this is exactly the type of team we will continue to struggle with.

If it makes you feel any better, he rebounds and thus is still better Charlie Thomas/Andy Van Vliet/Alex Illikainen. I wish Gardo would Crean these three jokers after this season.

Yeah, you guys have a tough scrappy team. I think if you had a good rim protecting center, you'd be a tourney team. I like the Underwood hire aa well. He is definitely a good coach.

This thread started yesterday and it will easily have more posts than all the other conference threads by tomorrow. Do B1G fans care that mich more about basketball than the other conferences? I figured the ACC would have more active fans than this.

Bohannon is a bad defender regardless of whether or not he had an ankle injury. Stop making excuses. I don’t know enough about Ellingson but guessing he’s nothing special on D.

Rutgers scored 24 points in the 1st half, don't go all slobbering over Haarms as he has zero points and 2 rebounds., like I keep telling you there is more to BB than just blocking shots. they do need to score and rebound. especially a 7'3 player.
Haarms now leads Purdue with a Box Plus/Minus of 12.2. This far into the season, that’s not a stat that can just be dismissed as meaningless, especially considering that Haarms plays a lot of minutes with other reserves. He’s a huge part of Purdue’s success this year and Purdue has been at its best, on average, when Haarms has been on the floor.

JJJ, HAARMS, Brad Davison. Some of the best defenders in the conference are freshmen. Fran just doesnt emphasize defense. Until he does, we will keep seeing years like this happen, where everyone sees Iowa has a loaded roster in the preseason but then wonders why they miss even the NIT and lose to multiple low majors.

If you are going to completely ignore the defensive side of the ball, like Fran and Iowa do regularly now, you need to have elite offenses to make up for that.

Never heard of Thomas, but I thought Andy and Alex had some sleeper potential..

But, I haven't seen an Wisky game in a few weeks now. Yikes.

Who's Gard have his eyes on (c/18)?

We've got two projects at best signed and have room for another. I'm guessing we won't get any early contributors.
