***Maui Invitational thread**

The best part of that season was knocking out the all white Duke team in the Final four. Jokes on us though.

I only think I noticed BYU because of them playing Houston. They couldn't be any more different
Funny thing is BYU ended up stealing a victory.

I am not sure their entire team is white but I don't think I saw them without 5 white players on floor.

Aren't you guys glad BYU never got a bid into the Big XII? Would be embarrassing losing to them every year.

I agree, so let's put him in a position where he can continue to be the treasure that he is. Which means nowhere near a microphone calling a basketball game.

It's pretty funny to hear him go off. I'm sure I'd be annoyed if he were calling a Duke game. Was hard enough listening to Dakich last week. Fortunately, I'm fairly neutral with these Pac-12/Maui Games, so I enjoy the entertainment on top of the entertainment.

BYU has a solid athletic program. They strive to be elite in every sport but they don't bring enough to the table.

You're probably right. Just thought it was funny when they beat Texas soundly in back-to-back years. Colin Cowherd compared them to Team USA in Men's Soccer. They're always going to be good or above average, but probably rarely, if ever, elite.

I would rather listen to Walton than Dakich, if they are both talking about the game. Walton has an vast understanding of the game. Other than that, they are both about their own shtick. Still better than Len Elmore when he calls a Duke game though. (which is funny because I think Elmore, when not calling a Duke game, is really good.)

Even as a Maryland fan, I think Len Elmore is a whole lotta meh.

Dakich is nauseating. Goodness. He sure knows how to beat a dead horse. He's not a complete idiot when it comes to basketball. He was a D1 head coach for 10 years. He's just unbelievably obnoxious. Not sure how anyone would want to play for that guy. I'd like to think his on-camera persona is just a shtick, but I doubt it.

Still not sure if Winston recovers at all this year. Still amazed he can play hoops right with his brother committing suicide like that.

He he checked out and looks like it. He’s just competent drained.

There’s never been a coach with worse lucky
than Tom Izzo with National title worthy teams.

To have Langford get re injured and be out for year then Hauser denied waiver for no rhyme or reason and then to have your all American point guard lose his brother suddenly to suicide.

You couldn’t make up a worse series of events to kill your team.

I have one for you. KU last year.

Michigan made the elite 8 with sophomore McGary out for most the season. Would be interesting to see how that team would’ve done with him healthy.

I think Robbie Hummel had a bad injury on Purdue’s national title contender.

Injuries suck.

Name all of the times Izzo has had bad luck with injuries and national title contenders.

I’m just curious to compare his luck to others.

The correct answer is 1990 Loyola Marymount. They were in the Elite 8, just a few weeks after Hank Gathers passed away (29 ppg and 11 rebounds). Okay, so they scored 120 points a game. Still, it was a big loss.

Cincinnati was the #1 team going into the conference tournaments in 2000 when Kenyon Martin, the National Player of the Year, broke his leg. That was such a colossal loss.

If we're talking about multiple seasons? Idk. I'm guessing the four blue bloods have all had their share of bad luck. Seems like a Duke guy has a foot injury every year. I know UNC's 2012 team was missing three guards.

This year and 2010 and 2014. Would have won it all in 2014. Maybe beaten duke in 2010. Duke 2010 really weak champion.

Dukedevilz,

Bo Kimble, Hank Gathers, and that whole Marymount team was as fun of a team to watch play as I have ever seen. Not much defense being played but the offense was incredible. Tough to think about how good Gathers could have been.

Nonsense. Michigan State was a good team in 2010, but they were very fortunate to even make it to the Final Four - playing Northern Iowa (9 seed) and Tennessee (6 seed) in the second weekend. Also, the 2010 Duke team had the #1 offense and the #5 offense. The 2010 Duke team is the 8th highest rated team in the KenPom era.

2014? Michigan won the conference outright by 3 games despite losing preseason All-American center Mitch McGary to a season ending injury.

Derrick Walton
Nik Stauskas
Caris LeVert
Glenn Robinson III
Mitch McGary

God damn that would’ve been nice if all healthy.

That Tennessee team was loaded. Way better than a 6 seed.

MSU also beat a very good Maryland team.
Butler played you guys down to the wire just like we did to them without Lucas. You weren’t some great championship team. MSU with Lucas could have definitely beaten Duke.

I’m not saying MSU would have or should have won that hypothetical game just that with Lucas we would have had a great shot and duke that year wasn’t some juggernaut

Huh? What the hell does that have to do with MSU in the tourney? MSU also laid waste to UM in the BTT champ game.

Anyways MSU beat a Very good UVA team in the S16 and lost a nail biter to UConn. Appling broke his wrist on his shooting hand. He doesn’t do that and MSU beats UConn and wins the title in what was a very weak Final4.

Both going into the NCAA Tournament..

Indiana 75 with Scott May - Probably talking about back to back undefeated champions
Indiana 93 Alan Henderson

In consecutive years Beilein:

Took his team to the national championship and lost to a Louisville team that would later vacate their title due to luring recruits with strippers.

Took his team to the elite 8 after winning the big ten by a 3 game margin despite losing preseason his preseason All-American to a season ending injury.

That’s just if you’re talking about bad luck with teams that could win a title.

The following season after that Beilein:
-Lost Stauskas and GRIII to the draft
-Lost McGary to a suspension
-Lost LeVert and Walton (two best returning players) to season ending injuries
-Lost a scholarship by honoring Austin Hatch’s scholarship

The following season after that Beilein:
-Lost LeVert to a season ending injury

But who’s counting.

Indiana 1975. Undefeted. Scott May, one he best players in the country broke his arm. Lost to
KentSickSick in E8. I was 10yrs old and devastated. Glad that pain only lasted a year:)

Mitch McGary (preseason All American) didn’t play a minute of conference play or in the postseason (Michigan lost by 3 in the Elite 8).

Just pointing out that your “no one suffers from bad luck the way Izzo does” is bullshit.

I get where you're coming from. You were one game from the title game, and you did that without Lucas. But, MSU wasn't anything special that year. You guys were 5-6 against top 25 teams. I just feel like if we're going to include all-time devastating injuries, we should first look at the heavyweight contenders. I feel MSU's fortune of winning 4 very close games in the tournament outweighs the loss of losing Lucas.

Yeah that’s pretty bad. Forgot about the Levert injury

Not according to the analytics

That 2010 Duke team was really, really good. The only Duke team that was rated higher in the KenPom era was the 2002 team with Williams, Dunelavy, and Boozer. But you know, if you have 3 white starters or something, you're probably a champion for the lightweight class.

The crazy thing about the 2010 team is every single scholarship player on that Duke team played in the NBA with the exception of Jon Scheyer and Brian Zoubek. Scheyer was 2nd Team All-American and Zoubek signed an NBA contract, but he was waived just before the start of the season as he was dealing with injuries.

Can you take you TIDS and keep it in the Big Ten thread? Nobody cares about all these UM/MSU pissing matches.
