Fear the Beard

Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc I worry about. Not sure he would want to go to Kansas and play Tech twice a year but maybe he will do that.

Yes. He makes like 3 mil something now. Now we got that NCAA tournament money.

Under construction is the 23+ mil budget practice facility. "The Dustin R. Womble Basketball Center for both Men's and Women's basketball programs. The facility will house, at a minimum, 2 practice courts with associated run-off space and bleachers, locker rooms for both men and women programs, coaches offices, trainer area, catering & dining space, two film review rooms, 2 team lounge spaces, as well as all associated current day practice facility amenities specific to top tier Division 1 basketball. The facility will be located west of USA and Indiana with pedestrian walkway between the two facilities. Utilities will be independent to the new facility."

We can redo the locker rooms however he wants. Not sure where the players live now but we can build a dorm. Pretty sure we have a planes and the airport is maybe 10 mins from campus. We can pay assistants.

That’s good to hear but I guess I’ll believe it when I see it. I hope it happens honestly, is cool to see new programs rise up.

Nobody ever said Self didn't want to stay. He will be getting out ahead of the Posse, imo. His complicity in the Adidas recruit funding scandal is going to force his hand. Pitino didn't get the chance to move on ahead of the Posse, but Self is. I believe KU has been on probation more often than the residents in the Leavenworth Federal Hotel.

Self’s recent comments were a direct response to that insinuation. He said he has no interest in the Bulls job or any other. Also that he won’t leave the program in a bad situation.

As for being pushed out, that’s going to require hard evidence. Vague texts won’t cut it. Neither Bill nor KU will take a fall for the industry.

I’m not going to sit here like a Tech fan and call it impossible, but it’s probably less likely than Beard bolting.

Same thing was said last year when they went to the elite 8 and then lost 5 Sr and a Freshman NBA 1st rounder.

Ahh, so now he’s going to do that every year. Hey, at least you’re realistic.

Arguably the greatest CBB coach ever had very little success at Tech, but Beard will have them at the top of the sport every single year. Probably won’t even break a sweat in the process.

nobody on our board or any TTU fan has expected we go to the final 4 every year, even the sweet 16 if we are honest. But it is nice to have a team that is competitive and the coach builds them for tournament runs with a stingy defense.

bob knight was wayyyyyy past his prime and because he choked half the team at IU he had some serious problems recruiting at TTU where it was already not easy. Beard already has a top 15 class coming for 2019 the comparison is apples to oranges.

They don't understand the sport that they just started caring about, and are on cloud 9 right now with a very winnable Final Four on deck (congrats again BTW TT fans), so they are not going to look at things reasonably right now, and for good cause. Admittedly, we can all be wrong about Beard and he could stay there forever. We could all be wrong and this seemingly once in a lifetime event for TT fans will become commonplace. Why? I don't know why anyone would willingly be a lifer at a run of the mill program that values football over basketball, but anything is possible.

Bless you for thinking we are a football school. We were more of a baseball/ meat judging school. Actually Beard makes more than the football coach. I legitimately had to go look up our football coach's name to check on that.

If you gave TT or any other Texas school a choice for football success vs basketball success, they would choose football, I dont believe for one second that TT prioritizes bball or baseball over football. Beard makes more because bball is doing more right now. Since its a relevant point here, lets look at WVU. Huggins is paid more than the football coach at WVU, doesn't mean that the WVU admin wouldn't double that salary overnight to a football coach if say a Dabo Swinney fell into our lap and took the program from average to elite. WVU and TT are similar in the sense that they want to compete in both football and basketball, but if push comes to shove football gets and will continue to get the majority of administrative resources since that is what keeps the lights on, and by and large that is what their fanbase prefers.

Then why would he lock himself down at Texas Tech and limit himself? If you don't think Arizona or UCLA would right him a large $5mil check you're crazy.

If he can win at Texas Tech how exactly is he limiting himself? He doesn’t seem like the guy who wants to be next in line somewhere. He seems like the type who wants to build his own legacy.

Also, UNLV never would sign off on his contract. Apparently, the President of UNLV made the offer, Beard accepted and the BOR balked. Was he just supposed to sit there and hope he actually had a job?

Are they going to pay 4-5mil? How about practice facilities? Locker rooms? Player dorms? Private planes? Higher asst pay pool? There's more than just giving a guy another 500k a year and expecting him to be happy.

Yes to all that btw. He’ll likely get around 5 mil per. Practice facility is already under construction. Private planes are already done, apartments instead of dorms, assistants will likely get a 30% + raise, and so on.

Tech isn’t some podunk school. Our endowment is near 2 bil and our alumni are huge in the oil and gas industries.

Lets be honest he can win but he can't win as consistently as he can at a premier program. Again i could be wrong and TT could invest heavily in the basketball program or he could pull a Mark Few and say fvck it I'm happy but the % of that happening isnt great.

he was in the elite 8 last year and the final 4 this year, plus winning the conference this year. i sure hope he can keep up with the blue bloodsEyeroll

we know 1 thing TTU cannot keep up with the blue bloods on, arrogance.

Over the long haul probably not. There's just more resources. Again TT could invest and climb the ranks and i think that'd be cool to see.

considering you are basing this on nothing more than your opinion and the facts surrounding this situation say you are wrong, i'll just go with what is currently happening and not your uniformed opinion.

It’s basing it off past history. You’re a little more emotionally invested so I understand your stance.

we can just agree to disagree. i think most TTU fans would wipe our ass with your opinion that's based completely on arrogance.

we have the money, we have the facilities and now we have the coach. we are going to keep having success despite IU winning a NCAA title in 1987. will we have a title run every year? nope, but we aren't going to go away either.

To be fair I have nothing to be arrogant about. I again will say I hope to see him stay at Texas tech I just don’t think he will.

Well I don’t see them as a Cinderella fluke. That defense chokes teams out. Kansas kind of has become a fat old has been.

They are definitely not a Cinderella. This year's TT and last year's are legit. I just don't agree with the thinking of "yup well be right back here next year" even if Beard stays, its just not that easy, CBB is a beast, the depth is so much more than football, and even when you have the pieces to win, the NCAAT is a game of Russian Roullette for teams with National Title caliber talent.

As a Texas Tech fan I agree with this 100%. What Beard has done has been something special and this is not some Cinderella team. That being said I wont get caught up in thinking we are a dominant powerhouse just after 2 great seasons. Always gotta keep that chip on your shoulder and think your the underdog every year. As long as Beard is there Tech will always be in the mix come tournament time.

Beard has proven that just because you dont have the blue chip recruits year in and year out you can still win. One thing Coach Beard has preached is making sure his teams stay old. Having older veteran guys have proven to be a difference come March. Your not always depending on Freshman and Sophomores to carry you.

As TTU fans everything we know about this situation says you are dead wrong.

and you are definitely arrogant about your uninformed opinion.

He wasn’t way past his prime. Up until the year he left Indiana, they were perennially top 10ish. Yeah, he struggled to recruit at Tech, but not only because of the scandal.

Three four stars and a three is a great class at Tech. At a blueblood, it’s disappointing.

But who knows what he’d do. It’s speculation on both sides. All we can do is compare to past situations. Bill Self left a much better basketball program after the same amount of time and after saying all the same things. He even left arguably his best recruiting class ever, which Bruce Weber nearly won a national title with.

When Knight got there he was past his prime but TT had only been to 2 tournaments in the 15 years prior to Knight, he took them to 4 in 5 years including a sweet 16.

Has-been following a final four and preseason #1 before losing three of their four best players.

Hot take!

their is two bright sides to this
1st the 1 n done era is coming to a end
2nd reaching the FF opens the eyes of top recruits in the top 50.

Beard probably recognizes this and will stay. sorry but the B12 is not that strong a conference, look at it Kansas year in and year out has dominated the B12.

TT could do the same. this brings up my thoughts
it is better to be King at one place than be 2nd elsewhere.

all I have done is point out how hard it is to stay at the top.

You are like the car salesman who insists on telling the plumber how he should fix the water leak.....funny stuff

I’m starting to think you Texans are idiots. I’ve said Texas could invest heavily into the basketball program, I’ve said Beard could pull a mark few, I’ve even said I hope one of the two happens. The percentage of that happening isn’t favorable to you all. Please show me a list of coaches that stayed at their respective programs after advancing further than anyone had in their program history. I’ll hang up and listen.

Wait...TT could dominate a conference that KU won 14 consecutive times? Seems likely.
