Fear the Beard

Dude obviously doesn't need blue chips to kick ass. He is a chemistry coach, and I can't see blue chips being coached to take charges like Davide Moretti. I think they have the best team in CBB right now (56 wins and 6-1 NCAA record in last two years with two completely different teams), so why do they need better talent? I guess Shaka has "better talent", but Tech ran them out of the gym.

One thing he guarantees to do if he leaves is break up the magic he has right now, as Tech would immediately hire Mark Adams to replace him, and that defense that is befuddling the shit out of the rest of the basketball world stays right there, in Lubbock.

He ain't leaving to increase his talent level, money, administrative support, fanbase or facilities. He may want to do it somewhere else where someone else has done it a bunch of times already. Or he could stay around and kick all the blue bloods' asses, like he's about to do in the next 10 days. That might be more fulfilling to him.

To everyone clamoring that he "doesn't need this, already has that"....compare Bob Knight's success at Texas Tech to that at Indiana.

Game, set, match.

Why would he leave tech tho?

1) he’s / they’re already in the best top to bottom/toughest league in the country in the big 12
2) Dallas and Houston produce great talent and both are close enough to Lubbock for mama - compete for and get the best local talent with Texas, Baylor, And A&M
3) tech will pay up or match whatever blue bloods offer. And oil prices will be up for a while - boosters can afford to pump in the cash
4) tech is purportedly building top 10 level facilities as we speak
3rd best behind the BT and ACC.

the BT had 11 out of 14 teams play in post season tournies, 8-NCAAT the most of any conference and 3 more in the NIT. Doesn't get much better than that.

We also got Knight on the tail end of his scandal at IU. Even so, he did fine.

It kills me that the WVU fan is the one in here talking shit. Our recruiting class will end up a good bit higher once Ramsey gets that 5th star and we’re already in great shape on the next class.

Recruiting won’t be an issue with Beard.

If you want to compare, his last 6 seasons at IU are virtually identical to his career at Tech during the same span. Like a push. And considering that Bob did not inherit IU's program when he took over at Tech makes his run at Tech more impressive than his lackluster end of his IU career.

Game. Set. Draw.

Big 10 had a great 2018-19 season. Was saying generally tho.

Big 12 been tougher this decade. Big 10 better this year for sure.

Well, if Beard wants to do “fine,” I guess he’ll stay. If he wants to make history, he’ll go.

TT loses 3 SR starters off a team that might lose Culver this summer to the NBA, hard to replace that much experience and production.

Not really. He went from being in or near the top 10 every year to never cracking the top 10 and missing the tourney half the time.

And the fact that you consider it more impressive to have decent success at Tech than Indiana proves my point.

Not what I’m saying, E’er. WHEN BOB TOOK OVER TECH, they were a terrible losing program. Bob immediately made them legit.

By your standard, because Rich Rod failed at UM means that WVU is a superior program? You believe that s—t?

You just mad that Beard will be dancing in your locker room for another 5 years....

See 2018. Two of those seniors were not on our roster last year.
how many hired guns is Beard bringing in this year?

AS for the BT Michigan has been to the FF the 2 previous years. MSU this year dispite being without their best player is 1 game away from the Elite 8. Purdue is 1 game from making the FF,

Looking at that the BT is on the verge of having 2 teams in the FF and if things work out it could be where 2 BT teams can play for the NCAAT Championship.

next year the BT is looking to be better than this year.

He's making history right now.

- Back to back Elite 8 at Texas Tech
- First regular season Championship at Texas Tech

They just held Michigan to it's lowest first half point total and game total in a NCAA tournament game. Held a 2 seed to the lowest point total.

TT loses 3 SR starters off a team that might lose Culver this summer to the NBA, hard to replace that much experience and production.

Out of 8 major contributors on last season's Elite 8 team we only returned 2. Lost 5 seniors including All-American Keenan Evans to graduation. In addition to that Fr Zhaire Smith who went 16th overall in the 1st Round of the NBA draft.

We are back in the Elite 8 this season.

I'm not a WV fan.

Indiana wasn't thriving when Knight took over, either. 3 losing seasons in 4 years. He immediately turned both programs around. Difference being that he reached much greater heights at Indiana, both in the early and later years. He also fielded a losing team 5 years into his tenure at Tech. The same could happen to Beard.

None of this is even taking into account the difference between fanbases or Supermarkets Arena and Allen Fieldhouse.

you still had 3 SR's and next fall you only have 1 SR. not saying it can't be done but if you lose 3 SR's and your top scorer, things tend to go south in a hurry.

I do get concerned about Beard leaving and if he does, in hindsight, I wouldn't be surprised. But here's some perspective about Beard and TTU's basketball program:

Beard has a unique history, he's spent 7 years previously as an assistant at TTU. So his history at the institution speaks for itself. He came to TTU with an eagerness to make the program great. And he's made it clear that there are a many reasons he would stay but most importantly two points: if he can win and if the community and fans are supportive of the program. Go ahead and review videos of the atmosphere at the arena during the games- and if you've never been to the basketball arena you won't appreciate it. Not a lot of people have been following TTU unless they are in the big 12. But i've been to several games in the state of Texas against Baylor, UT, TCU, etc. Go ask them how well our fans travel. Even when we played Duke at MSG this year. We had SOLID fan support. TTU is now getting more national respect and our recruiting classes are improving to levels we haven't seen- we're preparing a top 15 class for this next year. Beard's ability to develop talent with even a top 15 recruiting class will keep him winning. Two first round pick in the NBA of Zhaire Smith and Jarret Culver- both who were 3 stars coming out of high school. Additionally, Beard's assistant coach and defensive guru, Mark Adams, has gone on the record saying this will be his last stop as a coach. And though Beard gets a tone of credit for the culture he creates, he's only as good as his assistance. And Mark Adams is the real genius behind our defense.

Though the "blue blood" programs are always an option for coaches- I don't think it's in everyone's nature to want to go be a coach at KU, UNC, etc. Some people actually enjoy building a program and getting all the credit for the success- build a Duke vs being a Duke. There's an immense amount of pressure and most coaches want to not only win and get good talent, they also want to enjoy their job. Beard is a God in Lubbock. We're already preparing to build a statue for him in 3rd season. TTU is building a brand new basketball practice facility. The university is showing their willingness to invest in whatever he wants. This isn't college football- and it's possible to compete on an elite level here not just the alabama's and the clemson's. And now that we can expect the 1 and done to be gone- the really talented athletes will go to the NBA and college basketball coaches will have to actually develop talent. As much as I respect the Duke's, UNC's of college basketball- let's not forget that most of the winning happens as the result of really great players.

Anyone that says anything differently, I’d LOVE to hear that argument.
Beilien of Michigan he just took Michigan to back to back FF's. that trumps back to back Elite 8's. also its not like he is getting top rated 4 or 5* players either.

Back to back final fours?

Michigan wasn’t in the final four in 2017, and it got bounced in the sweet 16 by the same person we’re talking about here last night. So no.

Michigan beat an 11 seed to get to the natty game last year then got tossed around like a rag doll by Nova.

like losing to Nova is a major flop. Michigan lost to Oregon in the 16-17 NCAAT

these are the NCAAT since the 12-13 season
NCAAT FF Championship game
13-14
lost to #8 Kentucky in the Elite 8 game
14-15
no post season play
15-16
lost to ND in the 2nd game of the NCAAT
16-17
Won the 1st and 2nd round games in the NCAAT losing to Oregon
17-18 FF Championship game loss to Villanova 79-62, tossed around like a rag doll, kinda overstating the game results.

I will still take Beilien over Beard.

but for now Fran McCaffery is Iowa coach and this fall will be the deepest it has been since the 90's
8 4* players by ESPN, 5 4* Players by Rivals 5 top 100 players by ESPN, with a top 100 4* and a 4* just outside their top 100 joining the team,

We literally just did that this season. Last years elite 8 team lost 5 of its top 6 scorers.

Let’s not get carried away in thinking that he can do that every year.

He only won the league this season because his daddy lost 3 of his top 4. Still went down to the wire. No reason to think that KU won’t continue to own the league. Despite the fact that Beard may very well be a better coach than Self.

Which is why he’ll be listening closely if Jeff Long calls.

and the SR's from the year prior were replaced by HIRED guns that were SR's.

big difference between replacing out going SR's with transfer SR's sitting on the bench, don't see that this year though.

good luck in thinking of TT doing what they have the last 2 season loaded with SR's.

as I asked how many hired guns are on the team for next fall?

No offense, but I'm guessing he's got bigger goals than setting Texas Tech records.

I don't know what his personal career goals are besides the team he's coaching winning. I don't know if its on his bucket list to coach at this or that blue blood or in the NBA. But you are wildly guessing.

He may very well leave and he may not. Will have to wait and see what he does.

I don't know how good will be next season. But we return our 2nd leading scorer and a few contributors for this year's team. Have some guys that haven't played a lot or at all but have been on the team learning etc. Plus have a pretty good class coming in.

I'm not saying we are going to win anything. But I'm not 100% certain we are going to fall flat on our faces.

not say they will fall that far but the odds are against them to repeat the success they have had the last 2 seasons,

saw what Iowa State did while bringing in transfers, worked for awhile till they relied on HS players fresh out of HS.

Beard will literally do they same thing next year while also adding 5* and 4* freshman to the mix. Tech will be right back here next year
