Fear the Beard

Let’s not get carried away in thinking that he can do that every year.

He only won the league this season because his daddy lost 3 of his top 4. Still went down to the wire. No reason to think that KU won’t continue to own the league. Despite the fact that Beard may very well be a better coach than Self.

Which is why he’ll be listening closely if Jeff Long calls.
Kansas may continue winning the league again next year. But keep in mind that Beard isn’t only working with 3* and transfers anymore. He’s bringing in 5* and high end 4* talent to Tech now. Tech’s potential is endless right now.

Beard will literally do they same thing next year while also adding 5* and 4* freshman to the mix. Tech will be right back here next year

Yup, TT is a blue blood now. E8 is the norm, never mind that these are literally their only two elite 8 appearances ever.

Things may be looking nice at the moment, but do you think he will be able to consistently recruit enough talent to keep Tech at this level (or better) year after year? Doubtful.

This is still Texas Tech. A few solid years won't give him the same advantages he'd have at a top program.

As for top 10 facilities, I'll buy that when it happens.

Is their any special reason he shouldn't be able to recruit? All the top programs had to build themselves up. Also look at what Mark Few has done at Gonzaga, Jay Wright at Villanova, etc.

In terms of facilities. TTU has a nice home court and is building a new $23+ million basketball practice facility that will be built west of the basketball arena.

Never jealous of Taco in anything, just comical watching you guys get so drunk over literally discovering the sport of basketball yesterday.

Nope we've known about basketball for a bit.

Who is the 5 star?

If you say so. Pretty sure any team doing well has fans beating their chest. No need to be jealous. You are just sad you are now falling behind in basketball now too, just like football, since coming to the Big 12. ;)

They are basketball schools with decades of tradition with Wright and Few putting in 15+ years of service at those schools. TT literally burst onto the scene yesterday, you guys are so far ahead of yourselves. Sure, Beard might stay forever and build TT into a superpower and make me look like a jackass, but for now the success you guys are having is a blip nationally that will be forgotten the first time you get bounced in the first weekend. Just chill and start with retaining Beard this offseason.

WVU not part of the debate, but that said our undermanned group of young players took out TT’s superteam of Bearded wonders like 10 days ago and that whole team is coming back, so maybe we’ll be back sooner than later.

I was chill and just enjoying us winning games in the tournament. Then I see these posts telling me to embrace the likelihood Beard will leave for blue blood jobs most of which are are not even open at the moment. But Tech fans are getting ahead of themselves on Beard? All I'm saying lets not pencil him in at UCLA, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, UNC, etc just yet.

None of the TTU fans are even starting threads on this forum just responding. It was a Kansas fan that started this thread. It was a Kansas St fan that started the other one saying if you don't like Chris Beard you don't like college basketball.

Wow, WVU beat us in a pointless conference tournament that nobody cared about.

Everyone knew that we’d much rather have the extra few days rest and a loss wouldn’t affect our seeding one bit. Nobody was surprised by that loss and no Tech fan cared. I’d think it would’ve been pretty apparent that the team didn’t care much either.

I don’t doubt Tech wasn’t “up” for the game, just saying it’s a good omen for our group.

Hard to beat any team 3 times in one season. Also if your Culver wants to leave for the NBA... I would totally support his decision.

You think that if KU or UNC called, he'd turn them down because his daughter hasn't graduated?

That might prove to be a very regrettable decision.

i think he'd turn down KU. there is no telling where that investigation is going and what sanctions get leveled against KU. He just beat KU for a conference title and money won't be an issue. he also has a top 15 or so recruiting class about to enroll. he's doing fine.

Worst case scenario is KU loses a few scholarships, vacates a few wins, and a one year postseason ban (doubt this happens).

Tech needed injuries/suspensions to three of KU’s top four players to win the league. Let’s not forget that.

Tech would’ve beat KU for last year’s Big 12 Championship if Evans didn’t break his toe, so slow your roll there.

Maybe. Big difference between losing one guy and three of your top four though.

But the point is that KU is likely celebrating its 15th straight if not for a complete disaster. To assume that Tech is going to suddenly rule the league is wishful thinking.

Beard is a tremendous coach. TT has the money to match everybody but 4 or 5 programs. Those jobs are not open. Texas is loaded with talent. Why leave where you are a god.

how many hired guns is Beard bringing in this year?

AS for the BT Michigan has been to the FF the 2 previous years. MSU this year dispite being without their best player is 1 game away from the Elite 8. Purdue is 1 game from making the FF..

Beilien of Michigan he just took Michigan to back to back FF's. that trumps back to back Elite 8's. also its not like he is getting top rated 4 or 5* players either.

Ffs, it's not even true..

Maybe if you type it some more, it'll magically become true..

Heh delusion is starting to set in

I really hope Michigan St wins tomorrow.

If Duke wins, they’re facing three potential matchups they’re already 4-0 against. Including making KY their bit34.

And KU needed Evans to get injured last year. Not for that, Tech would be back to back Big 12 Champs.

And you literally have no one else to blame other than your coaches on the fallout this year. Stop being a dirty program and you wouldn’t have to worry about suspensions.

reaching the FF is such a fleeting accomplishment, Villinova won it in the 17-18 season and in the 15-16 season then this season they lost to Purdue in the 2nd round. enjoy the moments and be wary of the future,

You mean stop self-reporting? I agree.

It’s a bit of a reach to pencil yourselves in as Big 12 champs if not for one player being slightly hobbled for a few games. KU would have still had an excellent chance to be at least co-champs.

Evans had a broken big toe. Not slightly hobbled, but I get your point. We had control of the conference but were only a game ahead. Anything could’ve happened.

I don’t think you’re going to find any Tech fans that think KU’s ever not going to be a factor. We’re just saying you’re going to have company for (hopefully) a long while.

Anyone who isn't convinced that he's the next great coach is insane.

Ark-Little Rock's Kenpom rankings before and after Beard:

2013: 220th
2014: 219th
2015: 235th
Beard: 56th
2017: 245th
2018: 296th
2019: 225th

I'd hate to see Self go, but if it happens, I can only hope that Beard hasn't already been hired by Duke or UNC.
Agreed. Best job of coaching this tournament.

Not sure Beard would be interested in the dumpster fire that is the Jayhawks.
Every big school is playing the game. It's not just a handful of corrupt programs. Recruiting is a bidding war between the shoe companies. Programs that won't play the game can't compete. Every perennial top 20 program is in on it, and it's been going on for several decades. The only difference is the shoe companies are funneling cash instead of boosters. You think Ayton went to Arizona for $100K as a starting offer? Zion was at Duke for free? There's a reason Coach K is suddenly getting the players that Kentucky did 3 years ago, and it's not his 70-year-old charisma.

Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana, and almost every BCS school is doing the same thing. That's how you keep up with the joneses and keep the profits flowing.

Under Armor had like 5 Texas Tech shirts on their website. I'm not sure they even like us.

I love the little guys that think their coach won’t leave. Keep up the good fight I wish I had that optimism with Indiana football but we haven’t had a coach like that since Mallory.
Beard has coached 15+ years in West Texas. He obviously likes it there. He is also divorced and his kids live in West Texas. He has very deep roots in the community and Tech gets great fan supoort. Message boards make for great speculation opportunities, especially for those that know very little about the topic they are discussing. BTW, Beard lost 5 Sr from last year and a freshman who was the 16th pick in the NBA draft.

If he’s as as competitive as he should be he’ll leave for a school that offers him bigger opportunities. You can believe what you want to believe but he will take another job.

Of course you are right because you know the man and completely understand what makes him tick....LOL!!!

I don’t have to know. There’s one coach out of many that comes to mind that wouldn’t take the jump and that’s Mark Few. The numbers are against you. Now maybe he’s not a competitive guy?
