5th Annual College Basketball Draft

Since I don't have another pick for a couple of days (likely), I'm going to drop one of my sleepers. In order for this pick to work out, his team is going to need to be better than they've been. If they are, this guy is likely 2nd team and maybe 1st team All conference and will put up nice numbers. After all, he's coming off a season where he average 15 and 6 assists.

With the 86th pick in the 2021 DukeDevilz player draft, I select Prentiss Hubb, Guard, Notre Dame.

@duckboy33 is on the clock.

Devilz hasn't called out any of my picks yet so I'm probably not doing great lol

Haha that's funny. Haven't even noticed that. I wouldn't make too much of my likings. I'm wrong all the time.

I kind of feel like Agbaji and Etienne could have been picked in a later round. Don't get me wrong, Agbaji and Etienne both have All-American potential. But, at the same time the Agbaji could be the #3 or even the #4 guy at KU. Etienne was the Co-POY in the AAC (alongside Quentin Grimes). But, he'll have plenty of competition with the Memphis freshmen, Kendric Davis, and Marcus Sasser. Ceiling is still pretty high with those two... But, the floor makes me think they could have been taken a round later or so.

I don't think any of your picks are bad. The 2nd and 3rd round picks make me pause a little. But really, anyone in the top 50 has a decent shot at All-American honors. I've included my rankings in parenthesis.

1. Drew Timme (1)
24. Ochai Agbaji (51)
25. Tyson Etienne (44)
48. Kellan Grady (42)
49. Grant Sherfield (35)
72. Antoine Davis (64)
73. Avery Anderson (82)

Notre Dame is such a weird team. They can probably outscore just about any team in America. But, they're also susceptible to losing to a random mid-major. In 20 years of the KenPom metrics, Notre Dame has only had a top 50 defense once (#43 in 2008). I originally had Hubb in my top 50.. and then I kept dropping him further and further. You can watch the film of just about any quality ACC player and you'll notice very quickly that they are torching that Irish Defense.

I only mention that because I wonder if Notre Dame can actually consistently win. The offensive numbers will look great for Hubb and Laszewski, and that will help for getting votes to the 1st or 2nd Team. But, if ND is below .500 in league play, you can be certain that it's because of that shoddy defense.

Absolutely. They've been middling to bad defensively for Brey's entire tenure and it's been what has held them back. And if you look at their results, the trend is not kind to Brey. He needs to turn it around or their will be more pressure on him to retire of for Swarbrick to "retire" him.

I do think ND will be better this year. Bringing Solomon back should help and adding Atkinson should ease the loss of Juwan Durham. Plus, it looks like the ACC will be a little down this year so if they can sneak into that 7-8 range, Hubb has a chance to pan out for me.

lol I hope not. I have opinions on most players, but they're not necessarily accurate.

My 8 year wedding anniversary was couple days ago. Was out to dinner with the wife and she was looking hot and there was definitely going to be some sexy time at the end of the evening. I was unpleasant and apparently very sad looking during the entire dinner and the wife was finally like, WTF is wrong with you? I had to come clean and tell her the night was ruined because @dukedevilz made no comment about my Marcus Sasser and Kyle Lofton picks.

Worst. Anniversary. Ever.

I'll take my second French Canadian of the draft... Quincy Guerrier, Oregon.

@duckboy33 I've now drafted more Pac-12 guys than you (3). I'll take the title for the biggest Pac-12 homer.

Ha! My team prob not the best, but having fun.

Sometimes I feel like it's almost better/easier to have low expectations. Don't want to build it up too much.

It's fun to speculate who might be All-Americans - or who might be the biggest steal. Eventually, we're all going to miss on some... and we're all going to have some nice surprises along the way, too. I think you've got the right approach for this.

Just want to crush Hail and GE Nole😛

Different strategy for me this year. Last year, I was able to draft 3 AA's. This year, with the 11th pick, I'm relegated to needing to get as many 1st team All conference guys (with hopefully high win share totals).

Hopefully Ivey (of course) or Quinnerly can sneak onto one of the 3 AA teams and I get a few HM AA's. I'm going to need them without a sure fire 1st teamer.

That’s been my strategy too. I don’t think I have a lot of strength outside of the top 2, but I think I have some really good potential for all conference players. Not a lot of home runs but I think several standing doubles.

His improvement trajectory really was amazing last year, and I think post-to-post passing will be a strength this year for Duke. With PB getting so much defensive attention, I think Williams is positioned well to excel without too much expectation being placed on him. I’m happy I landed him.
Yea we beat yall last year during the regular season and then yall beat us in the accT and i literally didnt even remember mark williams from the first game and i think he went 20-20 on us in the accT.

Bill Walton would be proud

That's a national treasure right there. Love listening to his rambles.

Was hoping to see him last year. They relocated the Maui Invitational to my hometown of Asheville, NC. Would have bought tickets for every session. But, of course, they never opened up ticket sales to the public.

Got to shake his hand at Mac Court when Oregon played UCLA. Seems like a great guy.

Ducks are playing in the Maui invitational this year but they moved it to Las Vegas. I actually coached one of the players on Chaminade when he was in CYO ball

Everything you said is so true. No surprise their best teams recently had guys like Grant.

And yet, I think they will actually be a very solid team this year. Wouldn’t be all that surprised to see them earn the last double bye in ACCT.

Awesome! Love Walton. I need to meet him sometime... And I'll have to get another in-season thread of all of his crazy shenanigans.

That's cool that you got to coach a future college basketball player. I need to get more involved with stuff like that. You guys get Chaminade in the opening round. That should be fun. Had a friend who played there a few years ago. He had a much better experience at Chaminade than at Colorado State. To be fair, I don't think many people have enjoyed having Larry Eustachy as a coach lol.

The draft has been going by pretty quickly. Everyone seems really motivated.

It's been fun! And it does go by awfully fast. This is a good group of very active participants.

Didn't you just pick Chris Lykes 5 hours ago?

False start! And yes, @hailtoyourvictor you did take Chris Lykes a few moments earlier. Jeenathan Williams is still available... But, since you did post that before GE Nole, I'll allow you to override your initial pick if you'd like.

They could be dangerous, no question. Hubb is super crafty with the ball. And Laszewski is a dynamite shooter. Had an outrageous effective field goal percentage, nearing 68%. Goodwin, Ryan, and Wertz are all capable scorers.

I'm most interested to see what kind of an effect Paul Atkinson has on the team. He was #2 in the Ivy League in Defensive Win Shares in his last season. I can remember him playing against Clemson a few years ago - and my thoughts were something like, "This guy is better than the Clemson bigs." So, maybe he'll be a difference maker? I expect their offense to be in the top 10. Just not overly confident about that defense.

Bahahahahaha. Gold.

How did I miss this post? Wow!

Now, tell your wife that based on the past Pick 'Em Results, I'm strongly inclined to believe that she'd be better suited for drafting the rest of your team. Validation from me is a surefire way to get more sexy time. You're welcome.

Dude takes so long that I forgot I picked lol.

Sweet I’ll take Jeenathon. (Mind games)

Fair enough. Williams instead of Lykes.

On a side note, I think the signing of Jeenathan Williams was one of the first signs that Nate Oats may not be your typical mid-major coach. Williams was a 4-star recruit who had like a dozen P6 offers... and he chose Buffalo!
