The Vilest of Basketball Programs

I never said he was the biggest racist to ever live. There’s been more than enough quotes & articles about Rupp to prove he was racist.
It doesn’t effect me at all. Just not sure why it bothers so many UK fans. I don’t care how many black kids he helped get into school, how many he offered, if he had a black player before any other teams.
When you openly call blacks, “ coons & the N word”, THEN YOURE A RACIST.
Takes much more than words to be racist, IMO. It has been proven time and again he helped black players get scholarships elsewhere. Don't know many racists that would do that. Again, it was not uncommon for those words to be tossed around in that era. That certainly doesn't mean everyone using them was racist. You and I didn't grow up in that era, so we will never understand it. However, I don't imagine it was too terribly different than the divide today between conservatives and liberals and the ridiculous insults and slander that goes along with it.

I agree with most of what you said. I could be wrong but I find it very hard to believe that Rupp was out recruiting for other schools.

I just read some of that. There’s a whole bunch of quotes over the years from the Lexington newspaper to support the idea that Rupp wasn’t racist while there’s a whole bunch of “poor journalism” citations that all come from people who don’t write for the Lexington newspaper. Lol

I didn’t read the whole thing but some points are made about how he wasn’t as bad as history tends to portray him. Still though, I’m not sure why any Kentucky fans would defend him or even care for that matter. If I found out today that Phog Allen did and said all the same things Rupp was accused of then I would give no ****s.

if its a school as a whole... then its a toss up between UL, Mich State and Baylor. all three have just disgusting crap. UL is paying for sex for kids under 18. Baylor for the murder and cover up plus covering up sexual assault... then MSU for that disgusting doctor and the sexual assault cover ups.

but Cal is a slick talker and we get a bunch of recruits so I imagine a lot of people will want to say UK out of jealousy.

I’ve had “talks” with Jon Scott over the years. He’s very biased in the facts he puts on his website.
I agree with you, not sure why it bothers UK fans so damn much.

Something interesting about Jon Scott is he's never lived in Kentucky. I assume if you've talked to him, you know where he's from.

Yeah, if you were a 16 year old recruit would you turn that down?
I am sure if you were the parents of a 16 year old recruit you would love him to lose his virginity to Katina. Even better if the recruit was a 16 year old daughter. I am sure you have no problem with that.

I'm not saying it was like that, but obviously he didn't hesitate to put in a good word when he could, before the days of integration in the SEC.

We call people like that bandwagoners.
When I think of bandwagon fans they are people that jump on when that team is winning and they were nowhere to be seen in the shitty years prior to or after the successful years (see Golden State "fans"). I wouldn't call a dude that invests who knows how many thousands of hours on UK stats, history, etc., a bandwagoner.

Dude seriously, are you really going to act like he wasn't a racist? It's been well documented over the past 50 years.

Below is from an article I found from a UK fan who's a journalist.

1. Rupp allowed Sports Illustrated writer Frank Deford to stand in the Wildcats' locker room at halftime. Deford said he was stunned by Rupp's racist halftime exhortations.

"He said, 'You've got to beat those coons, ' "Deford said. "He turned to (center) Thad Jaracz. 'You go after that big coon.' . . . He talked that way all the time. . . A chill went through me. I was standing in the back of the room, and I looked around at the players. They all kind of ducked their heads. They were embarrassed. This was clearly the type of thing that went over the line."

2. The second documented racial slur attributed to Rupp is found in a quote from Harry Lancaster, long-time assistant to Rupp, in his book Adolph Rupp As I Knew Him (Lexington Productions, 1979). Rupp said after a meeting with Dr. John Oswald, UK President at the time, "Harry, that son of a bitch is ordering me to get some ******s in here. What am I going to do ? He's the boss.

3.One story which does indeed demonstrate that Rupp was prejudiced against blacks is related by Ron Grinker in the book Loose Balls. This book, by Terry Pluto, attempts to harness the flavor of the ABA during its short-lived life. Grinker relates a story when he was escorting the aging college coach down to Memphis for a promotion of the local ABA franchise.

Once, I was on a flight with Rupp and sat with him in the first-class section. He had about six Kentucky bourbons in less than an hour and was about halfway to the wind. I told him that I was an attorney who represented some basketball players. Now, I had never met the man, and the first significant thing he said to me was, "The trouble with the ABA is that there are too many ****** boys in it now." I sat there just stunned. That just killed my image of Adolph Rupp the great coach. Maybe it was because he had too much to drink, but even so... - Loose Balls by Terry Pluto,

Rupp was from Kansas. jumpingsmile UK didn't MAKE him racist.

What the hell are y'all teaching good God-fearin' folk out there in Kansas @KisteK , @npreston , @schoonerwest, @toonces11 , @Hawkquake, , @MrBaracus , @Big_C_KU ?!

Y'all have a lot of 'splaining to do on this one to @jace46555 . SmokinSmile

It's funny that this whole rupp conversation all started because I said that it's funny hearing people who are fans of certain teams say that other schools are so bad. I mentioned many examples like, ul prostitution scandal, UNC academic scandal, Kansas in current scandal and Kentucky's past and having their arena named after a racist. Out of all the schools I had mentioned, it's only Kentucky crying about it. Don't get me wrong, I didn't expect anything different, but that doesn't make it less funny.

I've heard people insinuate that I'm thinking that Rupp was the only racist of the era, but this is false. I agree, people said those types of bad things back then. But it doesn't make him any less of a racist just because others did it also. I'm simply pointing out that you probably shouldn't call out another team when your building is named after someone who had a questionable past.

1a & 1b) Michigan State + Baylor
2) Penn State
3) Louisville
4) a lot of other schools

This really isn't a debate. The schools at the top are disgusting.

There is a magical thing called Google that lets you explore any subject on the interwebs at the tip of your fingers within seconds

FRIG! I wish you'd said that 24 hours earlier. On another note, you know anybody that wants to buy these? Just ordered 'em yesterday.

Dude seriously, I grew up in that era and things were much different. I watched as black kids were turned away from a swimming pool. You think any of the SEC schools had Blacks back then?

You want an accurate depiction go here, http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/rupp.html.

Jon Scott does a lot of research on UK basketball history. Number 1 was supposedly from the Texas Western game, which was false. Larry Conley, from my home town, whom I've met a few times, denied it happened. BTW he was one of Rupp's Runts....
Louisville is 75 miles from Lexington, which part of Kentucky starts getting racist once you go down 64?

Nah, Rupp was pretty racist. Cats fans just deflect and act like it wasn’t a part of history. Yes we had whores, paid for a a recruit. You guys had a racist at the helm, and had your point shaving in the early 50s, coupled with Eddie Sutton’s shadiness in the 80s.

That's all? UK shouldn't even be mentioned in this thread.

It’s pretty bad, but since most of you are okay with having a racist as a legendary figure for your program, coupled with naming your arena after him, I’m not too shocked that those bits of information seem insignificant to you and the rest of nazi Germany, I mean BBN, sorry autocorrect. Winking
#1 all time makes up for it. :D

BTW, "alleged" racist.

Ehh, I wouldn’t say Penn State, Baylor and MSU are the worst BASKETBALL programs. Which was the starting question though, I would agree with you if it was college.
