The Vilest of Basketball Programs

He started to recruit black players because he knew he had to if he wanted to keep winning! I believe his first black recruit was 3 or 4 years AFTER his team of white kids lost in the championship to a team in Texas with a starting 5 of all blacks.

Do t act like he was recruiting them out of the kindness of his heart, it was only because it benefited him!
Wait a second, so you're saying coaches typically recruit out of the kindness of their heart and not to benefit themselves? RollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaughRollLaugh

Again, don't be so naive. Do you realize how hard it was to get black kids to play at a southern school? Would you want to play somewhere your life was in danger? Educate yourself before you speak, it will really help your argument.

No, I'm not insinuating that they recruit out of the kindness of their heart, but you did! You tried to used the fact that he recruited black players later in his career as an example that he wasn't a racist.

You keep telling me to educate myself, but yet im the only person who has provided examples to prove my statement was correct. It seems you're the one being ignorant here, and should start to educate yourself.

Believe what you will. You have provided nothing but a baseless opinion piece without a speck of factual information and, obviously, your reading comprehension sucks. Never did I insinuate that Rupp recruited black players out of the kindness of his heart, LMAO. GTFO.

Lol it was an opinion piece from a UK fan trying to show that he wasn't as racist as society is saying. Lol thanks for saying that any opinion from a UK fan is useless. Lol you put your foot in your mouth on that one.

Have a great day, I've got everything I needed from you.

Why would I care about anyone's opinion when we are talking about facts? Just admit your intent here is simply to flame, nothing more. That is obvious, as you refuse to accept the information available to you. You would rather just live in your ignorant bliss and believe your opinion is the gospel. Wonder why that is..... Indiana fan. o_O

What information...you haven't provided any information throughout all of your posts. Your obliviousness to the discussion is past being comical and now bordering on potty fir you.

Why is so hard for UK fans to admit that Rupp was a racist? Yes, it was the 50s & a lot of whites in the south were racist. It doesn’t change the fact that he was hell of a coach & one of the greatest coaches in history.
I think there’s been more than enough documentation over the years to prove that he was racist.
Rupp recruiting black players really doesn’t prove anything.
I’m pretty sure John Schnatter has hired & done business with many blacks over the years.

I already know the information. I don't need to provide it for you. There is a magical thing called Google that lets you explore any subject on the interwebs at the tip of your fingers within seconds, should you so choose. Then again, like I said, you're just here to troll anyway so you don't need to educate yourself about something that would be contrary to your flaming efforts. That wouldn't make any sense.

No more racist than Dean Smith.

Can you show me a racist quote or article about Dean Smith?
You’re better than that.
Why didn't he have any blacks on his teams until '67 then? Certainly a little thing like segregation wouldn't have stopped him, being the champion of equality that he was.

Seriously, wtf are you talking about? You're saying that Google is there to prove I'm incorrect, but then, a couple lines down saying that you shouldn't trust what you find on Google if it proves he was a racist lol.

I really hope its just passion and dedication that's causing you to blindly follow and believe this line of thinking. Instead of it being a lack of mental abilities!!!!

So, let me get this straight....now instead of arguing with me and saying that he wasn't a racist....now you're just saying that he was just as racist as someone else who you think is racist?

I didn't think Smith was racist at all. Even he couldn't get his program to integrate until 1967 and he was all about equality. The entire south was like this until the mid to late 60s. Some of you don't seem to understand that.

Lol now that was funny! He couldn't have painted a bigger target on his ass for you then he did.
Reading comprehension did you dirty, again.

Sure...that was it. Not sure if you've realized this yet, but everytime you get burned you resort to a post like this. Its either about reading comprehension or that the person needs to educate themselves. Instead of providing facts against them...this is all you've got.

Lol we don't understand that because that wasn't what you're post was referring to....of course that was until he burned you on your original line of thinking.

What if the all-white Duke team had beaten UK to face all-black UTEP in the1966 title game. Would that have made Vic Bubas racist? RollLaugh

Kind of like (some) IU fans having to resort to off the court slander/opinions, instead of actual on court results/facts.

Hey now, they still have that meaningless regular season Watford game-winner to fap to. You never hear them mention the post-season result though. Very odd.

lol ite not slander if it's the truth. But yeah you got me...the only reason I think rupp is a racist is because Indiana has been crap on the court since 93. Seriously guys, is that the best you've got?

That’s not what made Rupp racist. I’ve yet to see where anyone has said he was the only one to have all white teams.
His remarks about blacks & the language he used towards blacks is what made him racist.
Also, Charlie Scott was a freshman at UNC in 1966 but freshman weren’t allowed to play back then.

You got me. Biggest racist that ever lived.

Elmore Stephens played for Rupp during the 1971-72 season, until he was kicked off the team for missing a team flight. Rupp had run short of players, and Stephens, a black football player, jumped at the opportunity to play basketball for the Wildcats.

"People thought he was racist," Stephens said. "But playing under him, I can't really say he was a racist. He was hard, but he was fair. He treated all his players the same when I was there."

Rupp also recommended black players to other coaches whose teams were integrated. Julius Berry, an aide to Lexington's mayor, said Rupp helped him get a scholarship to Dayton.

"We happened to be sitting in the same airport," Berry said. "He said to me that they'd love to have me but that colored boys couldn't play in the SEC. He sounded genuine when he said it.

"When I chose Dayton, (coach Tom Blackburn) there said to me that Rupp had told him that if he didn't recruit me, he was crazy."

Dude seriously, are you really going to act like he wasn't a racist? It's been well documented over the past 50 years.

Below is from an article I found from a UK fan who's a journalist.

1. Rupp allowed Sports Illustrated writer Frank Deford to stand in the Wildcats' locker room at halftime. Deford said he was stunned by Rupp's racist halftime exhortations.

"He said, 'You've got to beat those coons, ' "Deford said. "He turned to (center) Thad Jaracz. 'You go after that big coon.' . . . He talked that way all the time. . . A chill went through me. I was standing in the back of the room, and I looked around at the players. They all kind of ducked their heads. They were embarrassed. This was clearly the type of thing that went over the line."

2. The second documented racial slur attributed to Rupp is found in a quote from Harry Lancaster, long-time assistant to Rupp, in his book Adolph Rupp As I Knew Him (Lexington Productions, 1979). Rupp said after a meeting with Dr. John Oswald, UK President at the time, "Harry, that son of a bitch is ordering me to get some ******s in here. What am I going to do ? He's the boss.

3.One story which does indeed demonstrate that Rupp was prejudiced against blacks is related by Ron Grinker in the book Loose Balls. This book, by Terry Pluto, attempts to harness the flavor of the ABA during its short-lived life. Grinker relates a story when he was escorting the aging college coach down to Memphis for a promotion of the local ABA franchise.

Once, I was on a flight with Rupp and sat with him in the first-class section. He had about six Kentucky bourbons in less than an hour and was about halfway to the wind. I told him that I was an attorney who represented some basketball players. Now, I had never met the man, and the first significant thing he said to me was, "The trouble with the ABA is that there are too many ****** boys in it now." I sat there just stunned. That just killed my image of Adolph Rupp the great coach. Maybe it was because he had too much to drink, but even so... - Loose Balls by Terry Pluto,

Dude seriously, I grew up in that era and things were much different. I watched as black kids were turned away from a swimming pool. You think any of the SEC schools had Blacks back then?

You want an accurate depiction go here, http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/rupp.html.

Jon Scott does a lot of research on UK basketball history. Number 1 was supposedly from the Texas Western game, which was false. Larry Conley, from my home town, whom I've met a few times, denied it happened. BTW he was one of Rupp's Runts....

He won't read it, doesn't care, just wants to troll. Besides, it must be a Kentucky homer fan slant anyway!

I never said he was the biggest racist to ever live. There’s been more than enough quotes & articles about Rupp to prove he was racist.
It doesn’t effect me at all. Just not sure why it bothers so many UK fans. I don’t care how many black kids he helped get into school, how many he offered, if he had a black player before any other teams.
When you openly call blacks, “ coons & the N word”, THEN YOURE A RACIST.
