Experience and production. Not hard, really. Add in they were learning a completely different system offensively and defensively, and it's not hard to understand some inconsistency last year. But, we get you're not that great with logic and reasoning.
Experience with what? Losing? Production that led to 15 losses? Not sure how that's better than the experience Purdue's guys got the past 3 seasons.

I think most people are pretty high on what IU is returning. Right or wrong, there's 1 player on PU's roster that is a stud, and a few others with a chance to become pretty good this season. Again, not bagging on PU, but your roster is unproven this season. You're getting a lot of credence because Painter does well fitting guys in his system.

IU is bringing in a talented class to add to a strong core of players. It's not surefire, but it's not hard to see why people are predicting IU to take a step forward and PU to take a step back.
This. Well said.

You dont double team them the whole time. You trap ball screens. When there is no screen, you have the on ball defender play up in Edwards. When Carsen drives by that defender you have another defender there to force Carsen to make a pass. It's simple defensive strategy. It's not like they are going to double him every time he touches the ball. You just force him to give up the ball.

When he gets tired of passing, he will start to force contested shots. Both are wins for the defense.
Lol that’s basic defensive principles that applies to everyone, the difference between Carsen and the avg player is that he’ll still drive by the help side or make a pull up jumper before that help gets there. Good offense will beat good defense most of the time.

Oh I get it. That's why I've said before that I think Matt Painter gets the benefit of the doubt here. On paper the roster might not look great, but Painter finds a way to make it productive. When for the past couple years it'd be the opposite for IU. We'll see if Archie can buck that trend and actually meet expectations for IU for once.

And if Cline has a senior season like Smith, I won't be disappointed. I'll take around 10 PPG w/ 2.5 made threes a game. That works for me.
So he's exactly what I think he's gonna be. A spot up shooter who is no threat to take you off the dribble or create for others. Got it.

If that's what you want to think then I won't stop you. Just think he's going to surprise some people this year with his play.

What are the expectations for IU this year? The second season for Archie at IU? I don't think anyone is expecting a National Championship or B10 Championship this year. Improving consistency and making the tournament would be a good step for IU this year. Expectations will grow with each year Archie is at IU.

Yup. But thinking IU has players that will "surprise" people this year is somehow not realistic, huh?

Oh no it's realistic. And I think IU will have a solid team that will finish close to where Purdue will finish. I was just using your logic against you.

So, I've said I think IU will finish in the top four/five and will finish higher than Purdue and that's somehow unrealistic? Saying Purdue will more likely be fifth or sixth than top four is unrealistic? Not sure where the homer is in my statement. I have said Edwards will be a beast. I just don't think anyone else on your team will be much to write home about.

Just read the last few pages. It seems there are some fans of schools who have heightened opinions of their teams in the preseason.

I truly think Carsen is just that talented and will have the ultimate neon green light this year. Vince Edwards missed 2 games last year so Carsen was more aggressive and the kid put up 27&40 for god’s sake.
Yes he did. But he also had four other players around him there that drew a ton of attention. That won't be the case this year. It's literally ONLY Carsen that is going to get attention. It's an apples and oranges situation.

Every player on a college basketball court warrants attention.

I usually try to avoid your pissing matches with Westy but this statement is just silly. Even if he can't do anything else, Cline is still a 40% 3P shooter and could be one of the top 5 shooters in the conference this year. I hope Archie feels like you and leaves him open all game.

Don't agree completely. Of course everyone can play at the college level. Not doubting that. However, not every college player is equal. Some are better than others. Some players will draw more attention than others. Specifically for Purdue, Edwards will get 90% of the attention and the other 10% will be spread around the supporting cast. Just like for IU. Romeo and Juwan will get most of the attention, if I had to guess. Wouldn't you want guys like Green or Durham or Smith to have to beat you instead of Romeo or Juwan? Think so.

I expect Carsen to average at a min 21 ppg, and think we have a roster that will be good defensively with Nojel, Haarms and Carsen as the core. This is a team that will absolutely try to run more than we have in the past, and probably play a more aggressive form of defense that pressures ball a bit more (think something closer to Painter's original style of defense than what he's played the last couple years).

The question is how Nojel and Haarms have improved as scorers. I think they'll be good garbage bucket guys that score in transition, off rebounds, and by being setup by Carsen, but they HAVE to be able to score in the flow of the offense to take pressure off of Carsen. Having one of them develop into that will be key.

Cline looks like a good complementary piece that'll probably average around 9-10 and will obviously be a guy you don't want to leave open. I like that we can put a lot of shooters on the floor with Carsen. All of our 4 men can shoot and Sasha/Hunter can shoot, and obviously Cline/Carsen can. I think teams will have to live with leaving good shooters to try to stop Carsen.

I think Boudreaux is going to be a 12 and 8 type of guy, playing some 4 and the backup 5. The thing that I really like about him is his ability to shoot the 3 ball from the 5 spot. I think that small-ball look with a bunch of shooters will be a nice wrinkle and put defenses in a bind.

In short, I think we project to be a team that has a bunch of scrappy, competitive guys along with an elite scorer...and our success will be determined by how we handle scoring outside of Carsen from night to night. I think this is a team that has a 3 type seed ceiling if some of those guys develop into consistent second options, and a floor of wrong side of the bubble if they don't and Carsen is forced to shoot at will. My prediction is we'll end up as a 6 seed type. As others have said, I think we'll start a little slow with those tough games early on, but improve as we go.

Heard the same thing with Ryne Smith. Good shooter. Nothing more. He's not a guy you have to respect off the dribble. He's only a catch and shoot guy.

And opposing teams chased him all over the court to keep him from shooting and he still averaged 9 ppg as a senior. If that's not warranting attention.....

He shot 14x per game last season. His usage was higher than Dee Brown's SR season last year (he was in a similar scenario as Carsen will be in this season). I just don't fathom his efficiency increasing or his USG increasing enough for a 23 ppg season - not sure if that's what you're envisioning as well.

Geez man. I think you know what I mean. He's not going to garner nearly the attention that Edwards will. He'll be labeled (rightfully) a shooter and that's it. Cline isn't a guy that's going to single handedly win you ball games. But if you want to split hairs...

I think his USG will go up about 5-7% and minutes increase from 29 to about 33-35 per game. I’d say he’ll avg around 20 fg attempts this season.

It is and we’ll have to see how the others progress in determining Purdue’s overall success. I’m just arguing with those that think Carsen averaging 23+ is crazy which I don’t think it is at all.
