*Official* B1G Off-season Thread

Plenty of teams lose a 15 ppg scorer during the tournament or late February and advance to the Elite 8 or further? Do you have examples to back that up?

I didn’t say that. I’m saying you are acting like no other coach has faced adversity in terms of injuries, attrition, whatever.

Painter has had plenty of years to make up for the bad luck years and hasn’t. At some point you run out of excuses.

What teams have lost a 15 ppg scorer during the season and made the final four? I can't imagine very many at all, and I doubt very many projected 1 or 2 seeds have lost a player of that caliber during the tournament or late February. His best teams have been derailed by injury.

MSU lost Kalin Lucas in the 2008-2009 NCAAT, and still made the Final Four.

He averaged 14.7ppg, 4.6apg, shot 39% from 3, and won B1G POY.

Tore his achilles tendon during the game against Iowa State I think it was. Was never the same player after that.

That wasn't 15 ppg though :)

Helps to have Tom Izzo - a historically great tournament coach. Also helps that Kansas shit the bed that year and you got UNI. Obviously it was an impressive rebound from that injury...but most teams can't handle that kind of development.

But obviously Painter isn't Izzo. I think he's a good coach that has just had some really bad luck with his best teams. Given the fact that we had Nova in our bracket this year, I think Elite 8 was our ceiling. Would've liked to play it out though with Haas out there.

Can't blame 14 years of Elite 8 drought on 3 years of bad luck. That's something gilligan would do

"I think he's a good coach that has just had some really bad luck with his best teams."

Sounds like blaming his Elite 8 drought on a few years of bad luck, to me. If you meant something else then it's your writing that needs work.
It is discussing the bad luck with his best teams -- you even quoted it. It does not address the other 11 seasons.

Looking like Timme's visit schedule will end up as this:

September 29th: Alabama
October 6th: Gonzaga
October 13th: Arizona
October 20th: Illinois

Not finalized yet though.

Yeah, teams face adversity with what you mentioned. But very few final four capable teams have lost a 15 ppg scorer in the fashion Purdue has.

I know it hurts, but he isn't wrong.

sure he is. The Hummel teams absolutely were Final-4 caliber. Is there a chance they wouldn't have made it? Of course. But to deny they had the chance to win the whole thing is silly. That team was loaded.

Is a team really capable once they don't make it? Seems to me they're incapable from making it at that point.

Scott May averaged 16+ for the 1975 Hoosiers who lost by 2 to pUKe in the E8.

Michigan lost Trey Burke and Tim Hardaaay Jr (both outside top 100 recruits) to the NBA early entrance. That same year they lost McGary to a season ending injury. The team went on to make the Elite 8.

But regardless, Purdue having injuries 3 of 14 years doesn’t excuse the other 11.

Lol. No point in arguing with you if you can't understand this.
I understand that you think they underachieved with Painter as coach. I don't think anyone would argue that you've have a few good teams that didn't perform to what you expected them to.

Is it worse to be bad for a decade or to need to be 50 to vaguely remember your last really good team?

Once again talking about how ya ain't "scared". Well good for you. No one is scared of a coach who's never been past the SW16, either..Laughing

I'll take my 04-05 final 4 and those 8 seasons over not having sniffed a F4 in 40 years.
