*Official* B1G In-Season Thread

1st. You can't blame a single person for expecting Purdue to finish in the bottom half. Hell, I got attacked my first day here for questioning why some Purdue fans on the home board were expecting top 4 finish. I was told multiple time that pretty much everyone here thought at best it would be middle of the pack. A few Purdue fans thought 4th or 3rd place was possible if everything broke their way.
No “to be fairs” allowed. Yes we can blame you for making some awful prognostications. That’s how predictions work. Albeit, I didn’t think we’d win the B1G, but I saw this team play in Charleston, in person, and I knew they weren’t as bad as what it seemed like at the time.

I said at the beginning of the year on the home board that Purdue would have a rough early start to the season and get it together late just like the Ohio State team from last year. I stuck by that.

If you can’t settle down and make rational, level-headed predictions about a team, expect to be called out for it when your prediction goes horribly wrong. Have some foresight and maybe you won’t be called out for sounding like an idiot.

I totally understand Nassar and the bogus Espn sexual assault article in which Paula Lavigne included everything and anything no matter how iffy the reporting. I get it how low life scum use a child molester to rip on MSU.

What does that have to do with a basketball game? What does that have to do with the Big Ten regular season championship race?
No one tries to argue about Nassar. Ever. He’s an evil person. MSU really messed up, clearly.

Paula Lavigne on the other hand, is a liar. Because she has no concrete evidence of Izzo or Dantanio actually doing something, she just includes everything she can get her hands on even if it’s false.

They are completely different players. Rob is a PG, Nojel is playing PG, there's a difference. Nojel is basically a super poor mans Romeo that brings the ball up the court and can play defense. Doesn't have a shot, can get to the rim, gives Purdue another rebounder, and plays defense. He's a starting guard playing 29min/g and he's 0-4 from 3. I know thats not what he's there for and Carson and Cline make up for it but he plays PG because he doesn't fit anywhere else. Rob is an actual PG, can shot, can still defend, he runs our offense. Much much better player.
Not sure how you can state that definitively when one guy is a averaging 7 points & 25 minutes a game shooting 37% from the field & 32% from 3 and while the other guy who can’t shoot avergaged more points on a better %, guards the opposing teams best player, is the best rebounding guard in the Big Ten, and just made All-Defensive team. Pretty debatable imo.

You forgot fewer assists, more turnovers, fewer stls, and he hasn't made a 3 the entire year. 883 minutes and he's not made one 3.

Much different player. I wouldn’t say better.

But, but, but......You told us context matters. Rob was injured , missed games and Archie mentioned that he’s just getting back into form these last couple weeks. Weird you wouldn’t consider that.

Phinissee conference stats:
28 mpg. 6.9 ppg 2.4 apg 3rpg 1.1 spg 0.1 bpg
34% FG 65%FT.

Nojel conference stats:
29.5 mpg. 8.6 ppg 2.9 apg 6.6 rpg 1.1 spg 0.4 bpg

44% FG 70% FT.

Idk how one can conclude Phinissee is a way better player.

Who would you rather have as your PG?
For Purdue this season? Nojel. He can guard the other team’s best player whether it’s a pg or a wing like Romeo and he helps tremendously when it comes to rebounding. He’s also learned to pick his spots on offense, gets a lot of junk baskets, and isn’t a liability from the foul line anymore.

Now if Purdue didn’t have any outside shooters on the team than I would say Phinissee.

I agree Painter does a lot with less talent. He’s a good coach. However, overall, it really isn’t close. Izzo and Beilein aren’t just good recruiters. They’re two of the best in game coaches and developers of talent in the country along with being really good recruiters. I mean, it’s not even debatable. Painter isn’t in that category. And again, that’s not debatable.
It's not debatable yet, Painter has better conference records than both over the last 5 years. Arbitrary number I know, but consider this. Over the last 10 years Beilein has a 59% conference record, Izzo has a 70% conference record and Painter has a 66% conference record. This includes an 8-10 and 5-13 conf record for Painter. Over the last 5 years Beilein has a 61% conference record, Izzo has a 73% conference record and Painter has a 75% conference record. So the 5 and 10 year trends show that Beilein and Izzo, although improved their 5 year trend over the 10 year, they are both only 2-3% better over that time. Painter jumped 9%. This is a tad deceiving because the two year blip makes his improvement look much higher. So let's take out those two years and insert the two years just prior to the slump. Again, this is very arbitrary but an exercise worth looking at. So the 10 year trend for Painter minus the two down years and adding the very two years prior (so 12 years minus the 2 slump years) his conference record is 73%. That's better than Izzo's 10 year record.

Now, I know you are going to make a bunch of arguments against what I just did, and honestly you should have some good arguments. What I was trying to demonstrate here is that Painter is a better coach than you are giving him credit for and I think you are making NCAA tourney successes your primary factor. Which as I stated before, Izzo and Beilein get higher rated recruits and are very key to tourney success, besides the occasional outlier. This should also be a good argument that Painter is actually a very good coach, pretty much on par with the other two (besides recruiting obviously).

Phinese also missed multiple games and wasn’t 100% for several as well.

I'm just saying, you're building a team and you pick a PG, who are you taking first?

How is that cherry picking? You wanna use Phinissee’s 27% from 3 as a selling point? Lol

Its a lot better than 0%. Cherry picking meaning only using conference stats, didn't even mention 3pt%, didn't mention Phin coming back from a concussion.

Lol. Painter is not on par with Beilein or Izzo. Literally nobody with a brain would take Painter over Beilein or Izzo.

27% from 3 is trash. Weird flex but yes Phinissee is a lot better 3 point shooter than Eastern but Eastern doesn’t take them.

But, but, but......You told us context matters. Rob was injured , missed games and Archie mentioned that he’s just getting back into form these last couple weeks. Weird you wouldn’t consider that.

Who would you rather have as your PG?

I'd still take Phinisee over Eastern.
For this individual season, it's Eastern over Phinisee and I'm not sure how it's even that close. Moving forward, Phinisee might take a leap forward when healthy and with a full season under his belt. But based on the data we have this season, it's a pretty clear choice, IMO.

In spite of the fact that Eastern doesn't shoot threes, he's still a more efficient offensive player and he's one of the league's premier perimeter defenders.

I say that as someone who's really high on RP and think he's going to be an excellent four-year point guard.

Here's an odd fact. Yes, this is in large part because of the coaching turnover in the Big Ten but Tom Izzo, John Beilein and Matt Painter are the only current coaches to have won either a Big Ten regular season title or a Big Ten Tournament title.

You're making the argument something it isn't. Of course people wouldn't take Painter over the other two because of the very thing I stated. Izzo and Beilein get better recruits which equal better tourney success. This doesn't take away from what Painter is able to accomplish vs the exact same competition. It's the most apples to apples comparison you can make, and Painter is right there with them, again with less talent. Sorry I forgot that any coach can win with with less talent than his competitors.

Weird

Weird take. Eastern was clearly the better player this year. Next year, who knows, but it’s hard to argue actual results.

Beilein and Izzo are better at X’s and O’s, recruiting and developing talent. Again, not debatable except to fanboy Purdue homers.

Honest question, do you seem him putting his name in the draft again? That was obviously his moms decision and she is delusional

Poor man's Romeo? The only similarity is their height, they're pretty much polar opposites. One is an offensive player, the other defensive. RP is more of a pure PG, but in Painter's motion offense a pure PG isn't necessarily needed.

Was referring their offense. He's not a shooter, gets to the rim, thats his offensive game. Similar to romeo just not nearly as good.

The real question is whether or not Eastern is going to declare for the NBA draft this year. RollLaugh

So, you want me to believe, that Beilein and Izzo are better recruiters, better talent developers AND better X's and O's coaches yet Painter has a better record than both of those two over the last 5 years? Whatever floats your boat man.

I think he's got a real decision to make this year because you can only do it twice and withdraw - if I'm remembering correctly. Painter is a big proponent of those guys going through the process and I would expect Haarms to do so this year; but if Eastern goes through it again this season, it limits what he can do next summer.

His deficiencies right now are the same they were in April of 2019, so not sure what good it would do him other than to get some positive feedback on his defensive growth. I would hope he doesn't; but as you said, there are some wildcard variables to keep in mind.
