*Official* B1G In-Season Thread

While we are talking about football, Michigan has some studs sitting out of their bowl game (Bush, Higdon, Gary). It's kind of annoying. I get why they do it, but it's still annoying as a fan..... especially when one is a team captain.

Tough situation but unfortunately the new trend. Unless you’re playing in the playoff these games are seen as what they are useless and money grabs

Well I think they paid top 10 money to a guy who only has a mediocre bowl win.

Only? I guess 3 top 25 wins this year and a top 25 recruiting class don’t factor into the equation. If in 3 or 4 years we haven’t eclipsed the 6-6 mark, then yeah it will have been a mistake. But they’re paying him on his future potential and I think it’s obvious he has quite a bit of potential. I do find it funny that IU fans are trying to rationalize it because of how much he might be paid relative to his results so far. It’s essentially your only argument. Let’s revisit this in a few years deal?

For the price, I'd rather have TA than Brohm. More resources for the basketball program which is where all of the focus should be.

All of the focus? Even though a successful football program can bring im substantially more than a basketball program ever could?

Alright, before the “real” Big Ten play starts, I’ll do award predictions.

POY-Ethan Happ. Unless Purdue finishes top 4 I don’t think Edwards wins it.

Freshman of the year- Ignas. Pretty easy. Possibly best player on the best team.

DPOY-Not sure. It could go to Simpson out of UM, or some other player there. Happ possibly.

6th Man of year-Xavier Tillman. Dudes a beast. Almost no drop off between him and Ward (X is less polished in the post but more athletic).

1st Team

Cassius Winston
Carsen Edwards
James Palmer
Juwan Morgan
Happ

2nd Team

Anthony Cowen
Romeo Langford
Charles Matthews
Ignas
Kaleb Wesson

3rd Team

Zavier Simpson
Joshua Langford
Tyler Cook
Jordan Murphy
Nick Ward

HM
D’Mitrik Trice
Jordan Poole
Isaac Copeland
Glen Watson
CJ Jackson
Bruno Fernando
Luke Garza
Amir Coffey
Lamar Stevens (Penn State sucks but dude is balling out)
Trent Frazier
Vic Law
Eugene Omuruyi

I wonder if we will ever start seeing players on .500 type teams sitting out the 2nd half of the season to prepare for the combine.

Of course you’d want to wait it’s the only way for it to make sense.

You seem to be forgetting context here. He’s 13-12 with a roster mostly comprised of Darrell Hazell recruits. He’s won a bowl game and beaten 3 ranked teams. He’s on the verge of landing a top 25 recruiting class. All of this after the worst 4 year stretch in our history. If Brohm had done this at IU the last few years, you guys would have a street already named after him.
I mean, its hard to really argue this. Maybe Purdue made a mistake here. Maybe they didn't. WHo knows, and only time will tell. But I'd rather make that mistake, opposed to watching him go somewhere else, and prove me right.....

In fairness though----Doesn't a better FB program also lead to more resources? As bad as IU football is, it still pays the bills. I mean IU football is like living paycheck to paycheck. Hoping to get a loan at the end. To me, the better the football program is, the better the resources are($$$).

Good point, Borden.

The Big Ten Network contract pays the bills. Over 51 million this year.

Never got why people get upset with what universities are willing to pay for things. I could not care less if our coaches are overpaid.

Not necessarily what the are paying but who could they have gotten for 6 mil vs Brohm.

To be fair they’re in better shape than with Wilson. Allen gets paid half of what Wilson got when he was fired. Less than 1/3rd of what Purdue is paying Brohm.

Exactly! The old Purdue way to have handles this would’ve been to lowball him and lose him. What they did this time is unlike what I’ve ever seen from the athletic administration. Could this not work out and we end up overpaying for subpar results? Of course. But I think it’s worth the gamble.

Like I said, paycheck to paycheck....getting that loan, i.e. BTN money. A winning FB prgram leads to better, and more resources. Leads to where IU wouldn't have to depend on revenue money generated by someone else. Or something else.

Even if the rumors are true and it is $6 million, who cares? It shows Purdue stepped up to the plate to keep a guy who brought their program back from the dead in only 2 years. A guy who has made Purdue nationally relevant. A guy who has helped attendance increase substantially in 2 short years. A guy who is on the verge of landing the best player in the state over the likes of OSU and PSU. The cost of losing him is far greater than overpaying him a few million extra per year. If IU had a coach do something similar, I’m guessing you’d hope they’d do what they could to keep him.
Nationally relevant? Lol. Think our understanding of “relevant” means. But then again, this is more of the same from you.

Then I never want to hear people use the Champion's Classic gate as a reason why Indiana needs to scrap it. That is a dribble of piss in a pond compared to the Big Ten Network contract.
What is the champions classic? I dont think IU gets any of the gate from that event.

IU football will never be good. Why throw more money at?

I guess we’ll never know but for Christ sake Sweeney makes 6.2mil/year. I’m sure as a Michigan fan you have no problem over paying for a coach but to most of us it’s something you look at.

Was Sweeney or someone like that available this offseason?

Lol. Purdue fans rustled, again. Man. This is a common thing around here.

Purdue seems to be the new Iowa on the boards. Not a great look.

The problem is in general being in the east, the best IU can regularly be is 9-3. So at what point is the 3-4 games with it? Indiana will
Never compete with UM, PSU, PSU. Purdue has a chance in the west to compete and actually make it to a B1G CCG.

I guess. Personally, I think IU football could be good. But unfortunately, I think the administration thinks as you do. Again----successful FB, leads to more $$$. Which leads to better resources for other programs.

Don't know about you, but dude---I'd take 7-8 wins a year. 9-3 would be a dream season.

I’ll help explain.

1. Think about all the publicity and attention Purdue got for absolutely destroying Ohio State. That was an enormous win.

2. Brohm saying no to Louisville. That’s a big deal seeing as how he said no when there were so many reasons it would’ve made sense to go back home.

3. Tyler Trent. His story is inspirational and was talked about all year long (and still is).

So in terms of Brohm helping get Purdue’s brand out there more, he absolutely did. Don’t know how that can be debated.

And we are getting less with Allen. Close to 1/3rd. I loathe Purdue as much as the next IU guy. But see nadda wrong with they did with Brohm.

Explain how the past two years IU has gotten close to 1/3rd the results of Brohm at Purdue....

Yeah I think it was a good move by Purdue and certainly different than anything they've done in the past. It may not work out but I don't blame them one bit for trying.

I dont really care about the income from an IU perspective. We shouldn't be helping to fund the ND, Purdue, and Butler athletic departments though.

You missed the handful of pages of IU fans talking about how they don't get enough money from the gate. Again, any sort of split gate is minuscule compared to TV contracts, Apparel deals, etc.

Our basketball team already has top notch resources.
