*Official* 2017-2018 B1G In-Season Thread

The entire first half of the season, they were playing like a F4 team. They only lost once, to Duke, in the second game of the season... then beat the next 14 teams in a row by 10+ in every single game, including beating UNC and ND (with Bonzie Colson) both by 18, Maryland by 30, and 4 straight games of scoring 100+ points and winning by 40+ (against scrub teams, though).

MSU was #1 KenPom and in the polls for a short period of time, but then something happened at OSU. They got stomped and never seemed to play with the same confidence.

I agree that anything short of a F4 is a failure for MSU this year. Right now, I'm not confident they'll make it that far.

Definitely possible.

How old were you when PU won their last title...........? And the question is stupid. I mean UK has won 8 titles. Do you not count the four titles from 60+ years ago? Are the titles from 48, 49, 51 and 58 worth less than the title from 2012? Or do you count them all the same? Me thinks you count them all the same.

You’re right it’s a stupid argument but it’s the one iu fans constantly bring up when talking about Purdue. So I guess we can agree that iu’s banners are a hell of an accomplishment and Purdue has dominated head to head which is a hell of an accomplishment.

For my overachieving Buckeyes, failure would be 1 & done, Success would be Sweet 16. Would love to win at least 1.

No way they lose round 1. Coaching and personnel too good for that. I really think all four teams get to Sweet 16

Yeah but our national championships aren’t nearly as dusty as your “dominance” head to head.”

Not just championships, but NCAA success at every level of the tournament, even the last 25 years which is among the worst runs in program history.
That damned Mike Davis run in '02...

Last 25 years (1992-93 through 2016-17):
Indiana: 18 apps, 11 Round of 32's, 6 Sweet 16's, 2 Elite Eights, 1 Final Four, 1 Title app.
Purdue: 18 apps, 15 Round of 32's, 7 Sweet 16's, 2 Elite Eights

Fair response. But I like this team. Multiple shooters....Two quality, 7-foot big men. This team could out five guys on the floor that could bring the ball up, get shots, and well, make them. I just think offensively this team had more options then the 2010 team. Also feel this team was better defensively.

I'd say the majority of the Purdue fans I;ve encountered, have agreed the Big 10 is down. But it's funny how winning the conference changes ones mind. That is why I said---If Purdue had won the reg. season title, I doubt many would've went with the "it was a down year" scenario.

JMO.

The 2010 team was significantly better and way more athletic. This Purdue team doesn’t have much athleticism. JaJuan was a great athlete and all of the other starters were good athletes at worst. Not the case with this team. When it comes to defense/athleticism:

PJ<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Lewis Jackson
Carsen>E’Twaun
Mathias<<<<<<<<<Kramer
Edwards=Hummel or maybe a slight nod to Vince but not by much.
Haas<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<JaJuan

Not to mention a freak athlete in Barlow and a good athlete in Keaton Grant off the bench too.

Don’t think they were “significantly better” by any stretch of the imagination, probably were more athletic but think you’re being hyperbolic.

Yep. Athleticism is but one factor when evaluating each team. This team has better shooters (or at least more of them).

Some of these are odd choices IMO. The 2010 team seems better than this team on defense, but far behind offensively.

Kramer was a good defender, but inferior to Matthias in every other way. Matthias is no bum on defense, either.

Matthias: 12ppg, 4.1apg, 4.1rpg, 46% from 3
Kramer: 6.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.3apg, 27.3% from 3

And a better PG. Thompson over Jackson, and it ain't close.
Honestly it’s a split for me. Jackson faster, better defender, better at getting to the rim and getting past his guy and dishing to someone else/better rebounder for their size. PJ better shooter, more under control, not a liability at the ft line late in games (Jackson’s first 2 years he was anyway).

You would take Jackson over Thompson? Or am I reading this wrong? Also, Haas and JaJuan were two , totally different players. This Purdue team would be nowhere near as good as they are w/o Haas. You put a JuJaun on this team, and there not as good. Now, I don't mrean that as Haas is better. But he is better for THIS team. He(Haas) opens up lanes, and the perimeter. Without Haas, this Purdue team wouldn't be nowhere near as good.

Also, Kramer over Mathias? Really? Kramer could hit the broad side of the barn. Give me a SG that could actually, you know, shoot.
Vince Edwards and Hummel is close. Could not go wrong with either.

Offensively this team is much better. And IMO, just as good defensively.

I'd take this Purdue team over the 2010 team.

I liked Jackson. And before this year, I would've taken him. But not now. PJ really blossomed into a really good PG. And a solid defender. I'd take him over LewJack.

So I wanted to go to East Lansing to see all the fights break out, but I was working. Too bad

He’s comparing athleticism for some reason. I love Haas but give me JaJuan over him all day, even on this team. So much better at pick and roll defense, better shooter/shot blocker/rebounder/still had a nice shot over his right shoulder that was hard to stop. JaJuan was an all American for a reason haha

I probably would too just for the fact that defenses have to respect PJ’s shot, didn’t have to for Lewjack

Lew was much better than PJ because he was a threat to take you off the dribble, thrived in transition, put more pressure on opposing defenses, and was a better defender. PJ has been a nice solid role player (who's struggling mightily right now) but Lew was more dynamic.

He was better than Haas and I can't imagine how good this team would be with JJ, but he wasn't an all american that year.

It's actually staggering to look at Hummel vs. Vince in terms of numbers. While Vince has had a very good career and is a guy I'd take any day...they're misleading. Hummel was the far superior player and was always required to carry more of the load.

Yeah I knew he just was as a senior, I believe he was only 2nd team all big ten his junior year but I was more just illustrating how far more skilled JaJuan was compared to Haas. Unfair comparison for Haas obviously but man I wish he could come even halfway close on the defensive side as JaJuan.

Meh, if I had to take a pick , I'd go with Haas---on this team. On the flip side, I wouldn't take Haas over JJ on the 2010 team. Just a simple matter of personnel. Haas opens up a lot of avenue, and real estate for this team. Take him off, and the dynamic of this team changes drastically. He's a 7'0" money guy on a team full of shooters. He's going to get his shot, and it's going to be of high percentage. That is why I think he is so important to this team. You cannot defend him one on one. Just can't. But you can't double him either, because Purdue has shooters all over the floor. Like I said, he brings that dynamic. JJ wouldn't do that for this team.

But overall, not, it ain't that close. JJ was a terrific , all around player.

Sorry meant to say significantly better defensively as that was the argument.

To each their own. I see where you’re coming from but I think JaJuan on this team would just be another matchup problem for opposing teams with his ability to play in and out. I don’t think JaJuan would hurt the ability for shooters to be open at all and he was also better at pick and roll. He would be astronomically better than Haas on the defensive side. Especially in the pick and roll D which is Haas’s kryptonite.

Haas has been a third team conference pick once in his career. Johnson was an All American lol

That’s completely false. Jackson brought more to the table. Better defender, could get to the rim, and set up teammates well. Only thing PJ really has is 3-point shooting over Jackson.
