*Official* 2017-2018 B1G In-Season Thread

Congrats to the OSU guys on the board for last night's victory. Buckeyes showed a lot of fight in that final 10 minutes to claw back into the game and win it at the end. Was glad to see Mackey getting so much love, but would have preferred a different ending.

Frustrating finish for Purdue, especially considering the performance Boogie had. But Purdue played with fire one too many times down the stretch in a tight game and finally got burned. Have to be able to get a rebound to close it out. Tough to get beat by guys like A. Wesson and Jallow, but them's the breaks, especially in conference.

Saturday just became even bigger - if that was possible. Win that one and we're still in the driver's seat for at least a share of the conference title and a one-seed.

Only four players scored for Purdue last night, and only six even attempted a shot? That seems crazy to me.
Yeah, we have great balance but not great depth at least offensively. Cline is really the only scoring threat off the bench, and he's not one to force things. Wouldn't really have been an issue last night if VE hadn't struggled so badly from the field for most of the game.

Actually only had five guys score in the first win against Maryland.

to me Purdue has the best chance at the FF. MSU is still MSU but they have not have had the success the past few seasons. this MSU does have 2 potential 1st round picks.

OSU has caught teams by surprise in a very bad year in the BT.

Michigan lives and dies by the 3. if they hit the 3's they can make some noise, if not they are a 1st round loss looking to happen.

Nebraska is riding a pair of transfers in a bad year in the BT, they are lock for the NIT and a Bubble team for the NCAAT.

after those 5 the rest are a mess. injuries, youth and loss of players for various reasons have played a big part.

I’m most frustrated with PJ. Dude can’t miss 5 wide open 3’s when he’s a 50% 3-point shooter.

Yeah, he had a couple chances at daggers down the stretch. But it's tough to be too salty about him after all the big shots he's hit over the past few years.

Dakota was a bit disappointing to me with the turnovers. Was uncharacteristically casual about some of those passes.

I didn’t get to watch the second half but this was noticeable in the first. Some sloppy play overall in the first half from Purdue

OSU was forced to play small ball with all of their fouls and it ended up being to their advantage

I still can’t get over Haas missing that dunk. I don’t care if it looks lame but use 2 damn hands to make sure it goes in.

Yeah. That one really hurt. I'd love to see his and Carsen's field goal percentages on dunk attempts this year. Obviously Haas' would be higher, but it'd still be way lower than it should be.

During the past five games, that's certainly been an area of concern - not burying teams when they have the chance and stringing together a few bad possessions in a row in second halves. For example, I think in the second half when we had ~9 point lead, we go and turn it over on three straight possessions. That's a killer when you are trying to salt away these games.

With the small ball, I was disappointed to see Purdue not force-feed it into Haas. I know they were collapsing hard, but you need to at least force a guy like A. Wesson to defend a post feed and trust your senior center to make the right decision to pass out of a double-team. Otherwise, you are conceding the mismatch at the 5.

He seems to hack a lot out on the perimeter, and then is super surprised when a foul is called every once in a while.

Carsen seems to really overplay those first passes from whoever brings the ball up as he passes to one of the wings. Seems like it works sometimes for a breakaway, but then other times he's out of position and scrambling to get back on D. He's super quick though, and I'm worried about him hounding Cash on Saturday

Eh, I think DM has really good hands and rarely gambles. But it was funny on the one foul where he clearly hacked KBD swiping at the ball and did his best Thomas Bryant impression reacting to the call.

With regards to Carsen, I totally agree. He's come a long way with his offensive decision-making, but still has steps to make on the defensive end. He's wired to always go for the home run play -- but once he realizes that good, solid ball pressure can have a much more meaningful impact than jumping passing lanes every time down, he could become a really impactful two-way player.

It burned him last night jumping at Jackson's shot fake when he hit a floater to cut the lead to one, and the same thing happened a couple times down the stretch of the Michigan game where biting on ball fakes and jumping passing lanes allowed MAAR to bury some jumpers in crunch time.

But at this point, I'm picking nits of a guy who just went for 28-6-3 in a high-profile game.

Which one do you go to? I go to Miller's Ale House (central location for me and some buddies) Atmosphere can be decent at times, hit or miss.

The B1G is now a 3 way race. The #1 seed in the B1G tourney will be huge because the 2 and 3 seeds will have to play before the championship with the 1 seed having to likely play Michigan which I would expect to still be a tough out, especially if they're hitting three's.

The B1G is really weird this year. There are 3 teams that could legitimately make the final four and then you've got Michigan who is solid and after that there's a fairly big drop off but it still seems like anyone can beat anyone on any given night.

I live in New Albany and we usually go to the Roosters there. Big place and ton of big screens.

Since OSU hasn’t even made it into the NCAA tourney the last couple years I’d be thrilled to get there and just win a couple games. I don’t think OSU is sneaking up on anyone anymore.

Thread has gone crazy because Purdue lost by 1 point to drop to 12-1. B1G opportunity for Purdue to solidify a 1 seed with a road win at MSU.

The 1 seed for the B1G tourney is now a 3-team race. Either of those 3 teams can win that seed. As far as the B1G tournament championship, I think that is wide open and could be a surprise team. Very exciting.

Dakota, ugh.. at the end, feet firmly planted on the ground. Not defending or rebounding or trying really .. just ball watching under the hoop.

*Edit, Love the guy, tho.. just wanted a bit more at that moment.

Totally agree. As the guy who drives the Mathias fan bus, that was tough to watch.

I just wanted to see OSU win last night to make these games very important. A Purdue win last night gives them that two game lead. Saturday is now a HUGE game for both MSU and Purdue. Its going to be great.

Last night's win could make Purdue fans huge IU fans on Friday 2/23 for senior night vs Ohio State. Still a lot to play out.

Im talking one seed in the ncaa tournament. Purdue can get very closeto locking one in with a win at MSU, provided they dont loae any lol games down the stretch.

Just another indication that last night's loss isn't done doling out pain to Purdue fans.

Great post Gil.

@boiler1987 why do you go to an IU free board and try to have reasonable conversation? I can troll the night after a loss and go back to being reasonable. The gents over there will never be reasonable.

Very un-Mathias like outing. PJ and Mathias both looked off. Not an excuse and nice deserved win for OSU but they looked sick.

Thought Mathias (and Purdue) played really, really well on the defensive side. Made KBD really work for shtos, where he wasn't efficient. OSU had some minus shooters make a bunch of threes to keep them in the game.

Offensively though, that was the worst I've seen us execute in a long time. KBD completely took Vince out of his game. We kept trying to initiate offense through Vince at the top of the key, and he literally couldn't do anything against KBD's length -- even make clean post passes. And OSU just beat our guards to the spot all night and it killed our ball movement. Really thought Painter should've allowed Carsen to operate in PNR more since we were not executing and he was in the zone.

And our defensive rebounding obviously sealed the loss. Big win for OSU, and I'm hoping this was the wake up call we needed after skating by on shaky play for the past couple game. Hopefully it's not the start of something bigger.

The good news the schedule is pretty light after Michigan State. Even if it becomes a two loss week, plenty of opportunities to right the ship before the B1G tournament.

The weird thing is that even with the inability to clear the boards twice in that last possession, OSU only ended up with six offensive rebounds in total. Not that it's any less of a concern moving forward, but a surprising stat nonetheless.

Yep hopefully. I liked that our defense got back on track and hope it carries over to MSU.

But I think Holtmann gave a pretty good blueprint on defending this team. Not sure all teams can do that, but they consistently took us out of our comfort zone and really slowed ball movement.

This is funny...if you listened to the game Purdue was getting outrebounded by 50 and OSU had at least 25 OR. Those guys write the script before the game and stick to it hell or high water. Unfortunately the game was decided by that 6th OR. It's not how many you get it's when you get them. TIC

not now but earlier in the year. OSU is a sweet 16 team with the right seed and draw.
Michigan is looking at the 5 seed in the BT with Nebraska the #4 seed,

#6 thru #10 throw them in a hat and put them in those seeds.
its a real dog fight for the #11-14 seeds.

Youve waited patiently for 19 games spanning two months to get those troll shots in last night. Had to feel good for you, only thing missing was a gif of a rattlesnake.

I checked the score walking into the Nevada game last night and walked in with a Grinch grin.

I walked out of the Nevada game with tears in my eyes, watching the so called "defense" that was played.

I'll take it and not feel an ounce of empathy.

"In no other sport is the play of the home team elevated to such a degree so often. If you watched the opening minutes of Michigan State’s game at Iowa, the difference between the two teams was evident. This wasn’t MSU at Maryland or Indiana. This was MSU against Tyler Cook and a mid-major roster."

I wouldn't say a mid-major roster. Iowa is just young, which means inconsistency, as nitewing has pointed out. Iowa is usually pretty good when they have good juniors and seniors. This year their only senior plays like 2 minutes a game. Unfortunately, next years Iowa seniors aren't very good, either, besides Baer. Fortunately, we have a very good recruit in Joe Wieskamp and a pretty decent recruit in CJ Fredrick coming in for 2018. If Iowa is ever going to be consistently good, look for when the Bohannon/Cook class is seniors for that to start to happen. Need to keep getting good recruits and can't completely miss on a class, though

I’m apologize for him. Graham Couch is a joke

Rewatching Purdue Ohio State game. There guards are good, even in a down game. But oh my god, Isaac Haas fouls..... soooo much. Like literally shoved people out of the way for rebounds.
