Is the Summit the biggest news this offseason?

I'll say this in Trump's favor; If the country makes it through his Presidency without catastrophe or a giant mess for the next guy to deal with, then it gives me confidence that our founding fathers did an excellent job ensuring no POTUS ever could screw this up.
hell we have survived Obama; the first commie President of the United States of America.

Living through Trump will be easy.

@Bert Higginbotha ....can you explain tariffs in a nutshell? Why do we have them, why do they have them, why would some be unequal....who do they protect and who do they hurt? What would be the consequence of equal or zero tariffs?
Easily.

At the end of World War II, the U.S. owned 80% of the WORLDS production. To prop up the rest of the world the U.S. started a massive effort to start production in Japan and Western Europe that had been devastated by the war. It was called the “Marshall Plan”. I hope that you are aware of it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Plan

Now 73 years later those countries continue to want the United States to support their economies. They do it by demanding a price to do business with them.

Times have changed. There is no need to allow Germany to charge 100% tariff on U.S. cars, when the U.S. charges 4% on German cars imported into the U.S. If you know why please tell me. Please tell me why a stripped-down Ford Mustang in Germany cost the price of a full sized Mercedes in the U.S.?

To your other question:

What would happen in a world without tariffs? The folks who could produce the best product for the least amount of money would dominate the market. Germany would have a problem when a Ford costs half that of a BMW. Canada would have problems with $2 a pound cheddar cheese from the U.S. being sold in Montreal. Japanese might enjoy driving a Chevy.

I did. A responsible parent will not give crooks their kid to take them 1000 miles to get the illegally into the U.S.

Surely your are not that stupid.

Like I said, Mexico isn’t going to jail them and we can’t compel them to. Regardless, the issue at hand is families crossing together and being torn apart, not families crossing separately or just kids crossing.

Removal of federal regulations in banking, EPA and many other departments.

Did you ever take a damned course in economics? I doubt it.
Yeah, we shall see the consequences of this sometime in the future.

Obviously there are some stupid regulations out there, but not all regulations are bad.

I have read his book(s). I didn't come to the same conclusion you did. Could you cite anything specific other than a bluff about a book recommendation? Come on, bert. Do your own heavy lifting.
Obama in "Dreams from my Father" is a dyed-in-the-wool socialist. If you read it as you stated and do not understand that then I don't need to talk to you any more.

His father was an 'anti-colonist' from Keyna. The 'anit-colonist' allied themselves with the commies. His mother was a confirmed Communist, it was a match made instantly. He only hangs out with his "brothers" and "radicals". Did you not understand what he was saying?

I also have a large background in economics. I understand Karl but I reject economic model that kill 100,000,000 people in one century.

Awesome. Exactly what I was looking for....clear, concise, and easy to understand.

This isn't going to be as concise as Bert's reply, but bear with me... or don't. It's whatever.

The German import tariff on US manufactured cars is not in the ballpark of 100%. idk if Bert was going for effect or what, but the German tariff is around 30%. For comparison, the US tariff on imported trucks is around 30%. Maybe Bert was comparing the MSRP of Mustangs in Germany to the MSRP of Mustangs in the US, but those prices are influenced by a lot more than tariffs, like supply and demand, additional logistical costs, or just different pricing formats. Additionally, many of the 'German' or 'Japanese' cars you see on the road in the US were built here. A US tariff on foreign cars obviously wouldn't impact cars manufactured in the States.

Tariffs are designed to protect a country's industries and workers from the effects of unfair competition, in a nutshell. If Country A produces an abundance of... idk... peanuts, can meet the peanut demand in Country B, and sells them for $2 per pound (I have no idea what the wholesale value of peanuts is, just go with me here) and Country B is able to meet the country's demand for peanuts but at $6 per pound, the peanut businesses in Country B would likely die. Country B would become dependent on Country A for all of its peanut related needs. Doesn't sound so bad when we're talking about peanuts, but imagine it's a natural resource that a country can't operate without, or an industry that employs tens or hundreds of thousands of workers. This is why some tariffs are necessary.

Excessive tariffs are a bad thing. Tariffs should be used to level the playing field between allies, not tip the scales heavily in the favor of one over the other. The abolition of all tariffs, though, would be an atrocious and economically unsound idea.

Found this map fascinating. Getting into a fight with Canada doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when looking at this

Sure. That's one way of looking at the situation. Especially if you want to side with Canada over the U.S. on the issue. Another thing to consider is that the United States is the destination of over half of Canada's entire exports. Of the top 20 trade partners Canada deals with, they have an overall trade balance -26,070 but are +32,345 when dealing with the United States.

Also something to consider is that the United States is also Canada's largest supply of goods by a lot. Like 150,000 more than the next country. Just under half of Canada's entire imports. So your graph might be fascinating and factual. But it doesn't represent the whole story.

I don't think a trade war with anyone is healthy and at the end of the day, I think it will be resolved. But it baffles me that we are okay with our allies digging their feet in the ground instead of negotiating a better deal that is at least closer to being fair. And Canada is not even close to being our biggest problem in that area, so I do think that Trump needs to redirect some of his attention to countries that are hurting us more in trade. I think it is because Trudeau has been the most defiant, whether right or wrong.

I agree. To what extent, I am not sure. I guess it depends on when and where we consider the playing field to be level.

Okay, since Bert won’t read what I write, can SOMEONE please inform him that you can reply to multiple posts in a single post? Because posting seven times in a row... it’s a bit much.

Yes. There were a lot of things left out and I think Trump is a little quick to play buddy buddy. But overall, it was a huge step towards a peaceful resolution. It certainly beats having two leaders with nuclear weapons trading elementary insults and threats at each other.

Just got to point out... I don’t know if someone gets credit for being an absolute idiot and then not being as much an idiot. That’s like saying “Well, that guy raped a girl, but it’s better than some guy raping and then killing a girl (which is what that guy did before.)”

A bit disturbed to see the whole “No more military exercises” and it turning out our allies and even most of our military seems to have not known about this. I suppose Trump can just go back on his word if need be.

This is something that I don't get either. I didn't see it as a bad thing untill it was apparent that SK and our military were not aware of the deal. If, and I know it is a big IF, NK complies and the results are a nuclear free Korean peninsula and peace becomes the norm, I think SK will have a different view. Trump said we will revisit the situation in 6 months and I am sure that if NK is not complying, war games will continue. And then the narrative will be Trump doesn't keep his word.

Thanks... Can you specifically make sure he realizes that you can quote more than a single post per post? I am afraid he doesn’t understand that.

To be fair, that wouldn’t be a narrative... it would just be what is, right? Not saying it is right or wrong, but...

I think Bert has me on ignore too. He hasn’t replied to me in a while. He must be bitter about something I said and offended

Do you see me @Bert Higginbotha ?? Do you see!?

No way does he have you on ignore. That would be odd.

Wait... I have to admit, I am perplexed here.

So I always just thought that. Bert ignored me... like, regular ignore, not “Ignored” you know? Like, he read what I wrote, and then chose not to respond. I was always super impressed by his self control with it.

I should have known better, I suppose... Bert has the self control of a three year old having a temper tantrum.

But I am sitting here wondering... why me? I’m generally not the fiercest fighter (I’d say that would be Dat?)... I’m generally not the lowest IQ or informed poster... I generally don’t troll or try to be a dick more than most... so how did I end up being the only one who got ignored over Dat or Q or Brook or UL or any number of posters?

Btw, to be SUPER clear... on that last game last night, I went for the steal, got it, and then just tried to lay it up. Suddenly my guy started running downcourt with the ball. Like, legit glitch or something... like, I was standing there trying to lay it up. I was alone. White was behind me. It was a gimme layup. After a few steps I panicked as I was hitting the shoot stick and tried to let go and shoot again... like, you know how you have to do it sometimes when you get the ball and you were trying to shoot before you got it and for some reason your guy just freezes, but then if you stop trying to shoot and then shoot again, it shoots? And then it shot the ball from like the free throw line. Obviously I would never have taken that shot on purpose. And **** me, how frustrating that was. We won that game. Not sure if the controller survived... I haven’t gone back to check on it. I don’t think it did.

And @LetsGoDuke301 , you do realize that among the two leaders trading elementary school insults and threats, our President was one, right? Were you critical of him at the time, or just now for the purpose of (a) pretending you're so reasonable, and (b) giving him a different compliment?
