Idk, people probably said this 30-40 years ago but yet we’re still here. I was just sitting here thinking like there is no way CBB and CFB are the same in like 20-30 years. I just don’t see it with the way we’re going right now

There is no logical argument as to why schools need to field athletic programs at any level outside of basic PE classes from grade school through high school, however it is engrained in our culture and will probably always exist for the reason alone.

We are learning more and more about the impacts of head injuries that come with the sport. Some crazy high percentage of ex NFL players have CTE. With athletes getting bigger, stronger, and faster, injuries will only get worse. At some point, the sport might become more dangerous than its worth. There are a lot of pro football players now that have gone on record saying there kids won't play football. Just not worth it.

go back to leather helmets
that will make players much more cautious

the NFL finally made a rule where lowering your head is a penalty and could result in being ejected from the game
this new rule effects both offensive and defensive players

If you are an elite athlete, football outside of the scholarship opportunity is the least advantageous.

Minimal chance of a pro career
Maximum severe injury risk at every level
If you make the pros you are already 21-23 and have a minimal chance of surviving beyond your rookie contract

Meanwhile, for basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball there are

Probably equal scholarship opportunity to football
Multiple levels of potential professional opportunities
Injury risk of course but signicantly less chance of getting put in a wheelchair or having a permanent limp in comparison to football
Much better chance at a long term professional career

Good post. Don't get me wrong, football is my favorite or second favorite sport. I hope it never dies. But its definitely a possibility.

I hate the idea and basis of the argument.

There are very, very few high paying jobs in the world that don’t come at the expense of health and wellbeing. Sports are no different.

Its crazy to think about, but the game was actually safer with less padding and softer helmets. Players less inclined to use it as a weapon when trying to tackle someone. So I agree with you in that aspect. Hell, look at rugby. That sport doesn't have nearly the injuries football does, and they don't use any protection at all. Its all about how you tackle someone.

Look at the youth participation rates, supposedly they are in bad shape. Or at least that's what I hear from my buddies with young sons. Not to mention Jr highs and high schools may have to cut football bc of insurance costs, declined participation, and a variety of other cost/health reasons. I love football and it is probably my favorite sport but its in trouble if these trends continue or accelerate.

On the other hand, I think basketball and soccer will continue to grow in popularity.

With Rugby it's due to the fact that they don't really hit each other at full speed. The impacts are pretty slow and less violent.

I think the deal with American football is that players are also quicker, bigger, and stronger than they used to. I don't think it all boils down to having more pads.

Plus you are seeing guys retire who are in their prime. ANd its simply b/c of the danger of the game.
