Can the zags finally get it done?

They are different defenders. Can Chet match up 1-5 if necessary? I’m legit asking. I haven’t watched enough of him.

Not a great perimeter defender but his length/shot blocking ability is absurd so he's still going to alter/block shots from behind. He's basically a lite version of Kessler defensively but is also one of the most efficient scorers in the country. Sam Vecenie on The Athletic moved him up to #1 in his mock today (Jabari Smith is 2, Kessler 18th).

One of the biggest changes for GU lately is that Chet now shooting 46% from 3. He wasn’t shooting great to start the year and people were obviously giving him the open 3. Now he’s making them pay for it. This is great because it gives Timme more room to operate down low.

And I would not factor in quality of competition on his increased percentage because again, the good teams they played early on were giving him the open 3. So it should translate in March.

Haven’t watched them much at all this year. But seemingly would be a year they could do it. Last year Baylor and Zags were so far above anyone else. This year it’s more spread out.

seems like anyone of about 10 teams could win it this year.

with that said, they have a lot of experience from last years runner up team. That will matter in March.
Nah, they'll choke once again.

I looked at some of kentucky’s extended runs today.

60-35 over 35 minutes @bama
51-26 over 20 minutes @kansas
63-35 over 20 minutes vs Tennessee
46-17 over 15 minutes vs Bama
49-23 over 20 minutes vs LSU

Kentucky has a habit of starting a little slow but once they get settled in they’re just beating teams asses.

For being the #6 defensive team in the country on Kenpom… outside of Chet protecting the rim, the Zags stink on D. IMO a much better team last year. They don’t have the guards to win it.

Ehh, this team is much better on defense than last year's team. Offense is still #1 in scoring and #1 in Kenpom. I think last year's team looked better though. They jumped out early on everyone. This team doesn't always do that. I think the Non conference games for GU this year were harder than last year. I think the thought process on last year's GU team changes if they actually played Baylor in the regular season.

Fair. Just Felt like Suggs, Ayayi, and Kispert were so much better than any of their perimeter players this year. Still a good team, but will need good matchups to win it all—an athletic/long team that can shoot may give them fits.. that being said, basically every team has some weaknesses this year.

Kispert played the 4 last year. So just by that alone, its a way different team. Kispert and Timme were both bad defenders. Timme is a little better now and Chet is an elite Defender. Suggs was great no doubt, but Nembhard runs a great offense. Bolton shoots 45% from 3 and Strawther is 6'7 and shoots 39% from 3. So the length and athleticism is better than it was last year.

And yes, I say all the time that Gonzaga loses to teams who have the athleticism to put ball pressure on their guards and that also have length. But also, who doesn't have fits with teams who can do those things?

The Big 10 had 9 teams make the tournament last year. The conferences best win in OOC was against Loyola Chicago. They keep adding conference games and devaluing the OOC schedule.

It’s tough because at the same time, the PAC 12 had a smaller OOC because of Covid and really had no key OOC wins. And we all saw how well the PAC performed last year in the tournament.

Main point, conferences needs to have more marquee OOC games. I love the Big 12 v SEC challenge. Great idea of having these games played in the heart of conference play.

This group of goofy-looking white dudes is Gonzaga’s top competition?

Dumbass Lunardi is on the halftime show and said St. Mary's is the best mid-major of the last 15 years. Did he forget they aren't even the best mid-major in their conference? 😆
I think his point was that you really don’t consider Gonzaga a mid major. Their budget, recruiting, even arena do not match up with what an actual mid major is.

St Mary’s has no money. Their endowment, arena and enrollment is not good even for the WCC.

It is impressive how they manage to compete at a high level almost every year consistently. I liked watching them when they were basically a hodgepodge of nothing but international players, mostly Aussies, especially Mills.

Ya the Aussie connection isn’t as strong as it used to be. I’m not sure why.

He said by “his” definition.

Still…. the best and it’s not close? WTF? I’d say that Wichita St has clearly been better during that time.

That’s fair. Would add Butler as well.

What I would say is that St Mary’s will never get the money that a Wichita or Butler could generate from their success. Which made them able to step up. St Mary’s has been, and always will be a mid major.

Yeah, the "not close" part was definitely off. St. Mary's has been good but there have been some really solid mid-majors that have made nice runs in the NCAAT over the past 15 years. As far as consistency goes though, he's probably right (if we are excluding Gonzaga).

Just looking at their roster right now it looks like they still have plenty of international flavor. 2 guys from Estonia, 2 Kiwis, 1 from Lithuania, and 1 from Turkey.
Yup, still an international flair. Bay Area basketball isn’t good enough to keep St Mary’s competitive so bringing in international players is important.

That freshman big who is playing well was a 4 star freshman from the Pacific Northwest.

They got screwed in 2020. Would have been a 7 seed that year. BYU was gonna be a 4 and Gonzaga a 1 seed. Would have been the best representation by the WCC in tourney history.
