ACC Thread

I don't think UNC has a good chance to make a FF. I think they have a solid shot at making the second weekend, which is probably about right based on talent, roster construction, and coaching.

Miami loses to BC?

Surprising. Wonder what happened here? Did JL just throw in the towel?

Nijel Pack was out, and could be for some time, but they've played like crap all season.

Other than Omier, who is still playing well and consistently enough to be in contention for a first-team all ACC nod, every other player has been really up and down.

Doesn't help that 4 out of the 5 starters on a team with almost no depth have all missed multiple games due to injury. And even the games they're playing, you can tell they're not close to 100%.

The team is just really bad in some areas that good teams can't be bad at. Really poor defensively, no size on the interior, no quality depth, and way too loose with the basketball on offense.

Jared McCain is good.

I'd like to keep him for a few more years. Pony up, Iron Dukes!

Yeah, we had no answer for him Saturday. Now part of that is because our coach is too stubborn to evolve to some modern part of ball and took our best overall player and also our best perimeter defender off the court for the final 8 min of the first half. Watkins and Warley combined to play 14 first half minutes. McCain played 19 first half minutes by himself. That’s simply inexcusable by Ham.

His rational for Watkins was two fouls, but guess what? He finished with 2 fouls. So the fear of him fouling out came to fruition because Ham essentially fouled him out of the first half.

FSU outplayed Duke for large stretches of the game. But Duke absolutely dominated an 8 min stretch of the first half and that was that.

This isn’t 2019 or 2020. We don’t have lotto picks coming off the bench like we did then. There’s a massive drop off and yet Ham insists on playing guys like Nickelberry and Spears at the same time in key stretches that essentially lose the game for us.

It feels like the end of his tenure is near. If not this season, then maybe next season. Teams aren't performing like they were a 3-5 years ago - and Ham is getting older.

You got your eye on any potential successors outside of Dennis Gates?

It’s very near. If we weren’t trying to put a ton of resources into the ACC lawsuit/exit it would have happened last year. Now that we are done paying Taggart’s buyout (ended in January) I’d say it’s 60/40 to be at the end of this season. His contract has one more year so next year would be the absolute last year.
His assistant coach hiring the last two cycles was awful. Kevin Nickleberry seems to care nothing about coaching or culture building.

Gates isn’t an option. We can’t afford to buy him out of Mizzou. Well we can, but the big boosters want that money spent on football.

Dusty May will certainly get a call. And the first year guy down at USF probably will too. (Can’t remember his name but he was at Kennesaw State last year and we recruit Atlanta hard). Kellen Sampson has been a name I’ve heard too. But I think he might turn us down.

Luke Loucks and Sam Cassell are two names to watch closely. Especially Loucks. He is with the Kings right now but came up in the Warriors system. Great IQ for modern ball, great talent evaluator, would motivate the fan base and boosters, from Clearwater. He was at the Duke game and I watched him have a nice long chat with our AD. And Luke has already told me personally that he would love to come back to FSU and be closer to home.

One can only hope. If Duke returns Jared and Mitchell to go along with adding Flagg and Malauch, we're the runaway preseason #1 team next year imo.

He's gone after this year. That kid is good and I'll take it a bit further. He's better than Proctor.

No question, Proctor has been a major disappointment this year. If Flip and Proctor played like All Americans consistently, Duke would be right there with the top 3 teams.

UVA playing their exciting brand of basketball at Va Tech. Down 16-36 at the half.

UVA is down 29 and still having shot clock violations. I get that Bennet-ball is really methodical, but come on man. You have to practice getting good shots quickly too, right?

It has to be frustrating to be a UVA fan, every game comes down to the last possession, then you get games like this.
It has to be even worse after the title in 2019, now there are expectations.

Would love to see it, but I can't see him staying another year. His stock is soaring.

Mark Mitchell, on the other hand? Yeah, I could see him staying another year. Jump shot still needs a lot of work. Flagg, Mitchell, and Maluach would be a devastating frontcourt. Just hope we'll have a competent backcourt.

Very cool! I honestly had no idea Loucks was even coaching. I don't follow the NBA too closely. But yeah, if he's being molded in the Warriors system, he could be a fantastic hire.

I can't see Kellen Sampson leaving Houston. He's the coach-in-waiting and I've got to imagine he wants to build on the legacy and culture that his dad built at Houston. Abdur-Rahim and May, though? Absolutely. Those two have got to be high on the priority list. I think Abdur-Rahim was bringing in top 250 kids out of Atlanta - which, IMO, is very impressive when you can get a reasonably rated recruit to sign with Kennesaw State. And if you can recruit well in Atlanta, you should be able to field a tournament team almost every year. Auburn has done so well in recent years because of their success in Atlanta, IMO.

It'll be curious to see how well FAU does this tournament. If they can win a game or two, he'll likely have a slew of coaching opportunities. While Boca Raton is a nice area, I'm sure he's ready for a bigger pond. You all should be able to snag a quality coach. Looking forward to seeing who the hire might be.

Yeah, I’m almost hoping FAU flames out. Otherwise May will have better offers than FSU.

Loucks has been a pretty well regarded NBA assistant. He even helped hire Davidas Dulkys out in Sacramento. They were good buddies at FSU and both married smoke shows lol. And of course Cassell has been a long time NBA assistant for many successful teams.

What you say about Atlanta is spot on. Auburn’s rise coincided with us losing CY when he went with Gates to Cleveland State, and now Mizzou. Chris Singleton, Al Thornton, Toney Douglas, Devin Vassell, and MJ Walker were all Atlanta area kids and all won a bunch of games in Tallahassee.

Two of the most frustrating head coaching positions have to be Georgia Tech and Minnesota. The Atlanta and Minneapolis areas are producing top 150 kids every year... and neither program can recruit in their own back yard. Minnesota is especially embarrassing, though, because the only other D1 school in the state is a small school that plays in the Summit League. They're consistently losing these recruiting battles to other Big Ten schools, most notably Wisconsin.

Stoudamire having an NBA pedigree, I'd expect him to recruit significantly better in Atlanta than the likes of Josh Pastner or Brian Gregory... all that to say the obvious, building connections in recruiting hotbeds is crucial for the success of most any program.

No doubt.

I was impressed with Stoudamire earlier this year when I spoke with him. At minimum I believe you’re right, his pedigree and name will get him into living rooms. We will see if it turns into success on the court.

Goodness...Miami looks absolutely awful. What happened to them? I know they have some guys out, but they have been playing terribly most of the year. Look like they have never played D1 basketball before...

They were very thin to begin with. So 1-2 injuries took a toll mid season.

And they just don’t strike me as the type of guys who really want to fight through adversity. Matthew Cleveland is one of the mentally softest D1 athletes I’ve ever been around.

I think they’ve tossed in the towel on the season.

I watched the whole game and disagree with this assessment. Miami’s defensive intensity for most of the game was awesome, this was a game they were clearly up for. Unfortunately for them, Duke played with the same intensity and honestly this was the best performance I’ve seen from us. We were just too talented for them tonight imo. When talent plays hard it’s going to look ugly.

Miami has a hell of a lot more talent than FSU and FSU waxed them in Coral Gables too.

True, maybe I’m off but I don’t think tonight was them not trying. Poplar and Joseph are good shooters but not great playmakers. Tough for a guy like Norchad to do much when he’s undersized vs a bigger frontcourt when he’s a featured player.

I’m not speaking about tonight specifically. No Pack, no Cleveland. Like I said, they were only about 6-7 deep to start the season.

But they’ve lost 5 straight and only one was a close game. I think as a collective they have kind of waived the white flag. I’m thinking someone like Pack might fight through the injury a bit more if they had a chance to make the postseason.

Didn't Miami not have Cleveland or Pack? They aren't beating Louisville without those two. That doesn't take anything away from Duke though. They hammered them as they should have and that isn't always easy to do. Duke is playing well at the right time for sure.

Micah Shrewsbury is such a bitch. Makes total sense his son is named Braeydeghnn

God I hate watching UVA games. Couldn’t imagine intentionally doing that 30-40x per year as a fan.

UNC gets the ugly win. I’ll take it.
To be honest, the fact that Virginia is in 3rd place in the ACC truly shows how far the conference has fallen.

Virginia consistently has problems reaching 50 pts. Last two games they have struggled reaching 40 pts.

In no way, shape, or form do UNC or Duke deserve anything higher than a 4 seed. The conference is trash and they are reaping the benefits of playing a ridiculously easy conference schedule. Put either team in the Big 12 or SEC, and they are both pushing double digit losses.
