Germany lost a group stage game.
This feels like UVa's loss to a #16 seed.

Brazilians going to roll. Germany looked old and slow. Goretzka should start over Khedira. No Sane. Germans are overrated

If Brazil wins their group and Germany comes in 2nd in Mexico's group, Brazil and Germany would play in the Round 16. That would be crazy... There have been 20 previous World Cups, and Brazil and Germany have both been in the Final 8 on 17 separate occasions (16 straight for Germany).

He was 6’2 215 with 110 career steals. Probably could’ve run a sub 5 seconds pretty easily had that been a thing.

In 22 years, he had 123 career steals (110 after leaving Boston), 117 caught stealing (all after leaving Boston). No.

Babe Ruth's success in baseball is testament to how little athleticism one needs to be successful in baseball. This is the same sport where a pitcher tripping LSD threw a no hitter.

Also the same sport where you spend 95% of game either sitting or standing around waiting.

If Steph Curry took LSD before a game he'd probably go 22-24 from 3.

Just saying, it seems to have that kind of effect on people.

It also has the least educated players of the 4 major sports, IIRC (although basketball is probably catching up).

I may have a medium bet on Brazil at +300, and Colombia at +3300. Probably one of the two continental powers (Germany and France) going to win it because as a general rule same general time zone wins, but the depth Brazil's talent is just ridiculous.

That's gotta be a direct result of players getting drafted out of high school, right? I just looked it up and 316 high school kids were selected in the 2016 MLB draft. Didn't realize it was that many but that's insane. Throw in all of the foreign kids who get signed in their teens, all of the JUCO guys and all of the college players leaving after 3 years and that adds up to a bunch of people who never finished college.

I agree with the general sentiment that you don't need to be overly athletic to excel in baseball. Many guys are playing til their early-mid 40's.

But, I don't know if Ruth was actually slow. He had more stolen bases than some of the contemporary power-hitters like Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg. One writer once remarked, “In the field, Ruth was in real action, not simply a big man striving to move fast. He did move fast.” Sometimes a person's body image can be deceptive. Who would have thought that Warren Sapp could run a 4.69 in the 40 yard dash? Here's a link to a clip of Ruth running the bases after hitting a home-run. I don't think he's going all-out, but it's at a nice, brisk pace.

Ruth had a terrible success rate (123 steals, 117 caught, 22 years), and he had a similar attempt and success rate as Gehrig (102/100/17 years) and Foxx (87/73/20 years). Greenberg had a slightly lower rate of trying (58 in 13 years), but was only caught 26 times. So, for a contemporary slugger, Ruth was about average. Cobb once said of Ruth "he was pretty fast for a fat guy" (got that off of Yahoo Answers, but I think it's apt whether terrible human being Cobb actually said it or not). So Ruth was all right for a fat power hitter, I guess.

There's actually been a lot of publication in recent years that shows that most everything you think you know about Ty Cobb is based on historical inaccuracies. There's been some youtube videos that have come out on that matter and here's a link to an article on MLB.com that gives a brief background on why.

Yea, I don't know about Germany but I want to back them. At this point they are the Celtics after Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen got too old to win a title. The sad thing is they have young talent to make up for it but aren't playing them.

I like Werner's but he's not crafty. Reus hasn't really been in-form all season. After those two, there is a pretty big drop off up front. The midfielders are slow with out Goretzka on field. Sane didn't even make the trip, which makes zero sense.

^ yeah I felt the same way re: Germany, and the value's not there. If I miss, I'd rather miss with a great longshot bet or the most talented team. This year's Brazil team is so much better than 2014, but have to get over the eastern hemisphere hump.

Germany will be knocked out in the group stage. Mexico will win the group and Sweden will be 2nd. Poor South Korea will likely to be the punchbag. I can see Germany drawing Sweden and then routing South Korea by 4-5 goals, only to cry in tears after Mexico and Sweden draw their game.

That's possible. Not really sure what to think at this point. But, some of the people covering the Mexican team mentioned before the game that the team was confident in its ability to defeat Germany... These same reporters were worried, though, how Mexico would fare against the lesser opponents, playing down to the competition.

Mexico won the game and they had a few good looks, but it seems like their offensive strategy was mostly built around counterattacks. Germany looked a bit disjointed and slow on covering the counters. But Germany did out-shoot Mexico 26-13 and had control of the ball 67% of the time. I think Germany is a better team than Mexico and Sweden.

Here's another possibility: Germany beats Korea and Sweden. Mexico beats Korea, and loses to Sweden... Germany, Sweden, and Mexico all have 6 points, and Germany wins on Goal Differential. Germany will motorboat Korea in the final game by 3+ goals, knowing they need multiple goals to assure themselves a spot in the Final 16.

If it happens, it'll be poetic justice.
In 1982, Germany drew Austria, with a tacit understanding that if they would draw, both would advance, to edge out Algeria, who beat Germany.

South America is sucking it up so far. Lots of disappointments.

Uruguay, the group favorite, beat Egypt (without Mo Salah) with a lone-goal in the 90th minute.

Peru, ranked 11th in the world, loses to Denmark.

Brazil, World Cup Favorite according to Vegas and many experts, ties Switzerland.

Argentina, another Group favorite, ties Iceland, who has a population roughly the size of Bakersfield, CA, or Tampa, FL. Iceland is the smallest nation to ever qualify for the WC.

Colombia, group favorite or co-favorite with Poland, loses to Japan, the #61 team in the world (3rd lowest-ranked team in the World Cup).

1 win, 2 losses, 2 ties... A lot of really, really bad opening games for South America. They tend to struggle in World Cups hosted by European nations.

In 1982, Germany drew Austria, with a tacit understanding that if they would draw, both would advance, to edge out Algeria, who beat Germany.

It was actually that both Austria and Germany would advance as long as Germany won by 1 or 2 goals. If they won by more than 2, Germany and Algeria would advance. If it were a tie or Germany lost, Austria and Algeria would advance. Germany scored in the 11th minute then they all just sort of stopped playing. It was a complete sham.

Side note, that’s why everyone in the group plays at the same time for game 3.

I doubt Japan and Senegal both make it out of the group stage. Columbia nearly salvaged a point after playing the entire match a man down.

Germany will not make it out of this group, they will draw Sweden and rout South Korea, only to watch Mexico and Sweden comfortably tie each other and advance.

It's somewhat of a long-shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sweden loses to Germany, but defeats Mexico. That could potentially place all 3 nations at 6 points each. In which case, I think Germany would win out on Goal Differential.

Also, Group H is an odd one, for sure. Not sure who's coming out of there. Colombia still played fairly well with 10 guys, so that makes me think they could win the next 2. I think it would be fun to see if all 4 teams ended with 4 points (1 win, 1 loss, 1 tie). The last day for Group H is going to be crazy.

Should've been a draw, at worst, for Sweden. They got shafted on what should have been a PK in the first half.
Sweden got hosed badly. They should have had two penalty kicks. One on the shove/trip and one on a previous breakaway where the German defender pulled his jersey in the box.
