Utah fires Larry Krystkowiak

The other Coach K. He could probably land a job at Oregon State with Tinkle. They obviously have a long history together at Montana.

I'd think Alex Jensen, who played on Utah's 98 FF team, would be a good candidate. He's the lead assistant for the Utah Jazz. He may not want to leave the NBA ranks, though.

Why would Mark Pope want to leave for Utah?

Dude had a top 15 team last year and a #6 seed this year. He's going to make the NCAA's basically every year at BYU.

When/if he leaves, it'll be for a big name job, not Utah.

Do you know how much BYU pays him? I was unable to find it with a quick google search. Money can talk. I'm not sure UVA is a better job than BYU in football but Bronco took the money. I wouldn't be totally shocked if Utah made him an offer that he couldn't refuse. However, that really goes back to how much BYU is currently and how much they can realistically pay him. Utah made Larry K the highest paid coach in the PAC 12 and one of the top 15 paid coaches nationally so they may be able to throw out a number that BYU can't or is unwilling to match. Just something to keep an eye on.

Other names that I would keep an eye on:
Leon Rice (Boise State)
Craig Smith (Utah State)
Niko Medved (Colorado State)
Kyle Smith (Washington State)
Shantay Legans (Eastern Washington)
Damon Stoudamire (Pacific)

Being a private school, I don't think BYU releases the salary amounts. At least it doesn't show up on the USA Today Coaches Salaries. UVA is paying Bronco over $4 mil a year, which is ranked 31st among D1 head football coaches. That's more than some traditional powers like Florida State and Tennessee. I'm guessing Bronco came close to doubling his salary.

Mark Pope's father-in-law, Lynn Archibald, was actually the Utah Head Coach in the 80's. But, I doubt he'd make a relatively lateral move like that, especially with a heated rival. His wife is a BYU alum, FWIW. I could see him interviewing for a job like Arizona or Indiana, but don't think Utah is especially incentivizing.

I think Niko Medved or Craig Smith would be great candidates, as well. They've built their programs up nicely. It's crazy how programs can abruptly regress in a short period of time. Utah was such a dominant team in the 90's. They had good teams recently with Delon Wright, but obviously nowhere near their glory days with Majerus leading the way.

Midmajor vs P5

The problem with Utah is people think BYU is on their level.

They have to prove it isn't

Utah was able to successfully do this in football by beating BYU every year since they left the MWC and BYUs coach ended up leaving to take an ACC job. That perception isn't there in basketball, however.

lol you gotta be kidding. BYU and Utah were conference foes for like a hundred years. Utah didn't suddenly dwarf BYU with the conference move in 2011. They're relatively similar athletic departments, who have similar resources. BYU has one of the largest basketball arenas in the country. Sean Farnham has repeatedly said this year that the BYU-Gonzaga game last year was the loudest game he's been to in the last 20 years. That ain't exactly things you expect from a lowly mid-major.

Once again that is on Utah to change this.

Reason why looking at Mark Pope gets them a good coach plus it humbles their instate rival

And, once again, the two schools have similar resources. We're not talking about a random team in the WCC like Pacific or LMU. They have better resources than quite a few P5 schools. BYU's endowment is almost twice as high as Utah's ($1.97 Billion to $1.07 Billion). It's a lateral move.

Once again don't you believe it would be the smartest move from a Utah POV

Would it be smart to pursue Pope? Sure, if he has interest. But, for Pope POV? No. It's a lateral move. He's not going to consider it. Chris Burgess, sure. Pope? No chance.

Depends on the $$

Bronco Mendenhall is a member of the LDS Church and grew up in Utah. But when UVA came calling, he left BYU for UVA. Money talks. We know Utah was filling to pay Larry K a lot of money to be their HC. I have no idea if Utah is willing to pay that much for Pope or if BYU would be able/willing to match that.

That is your opinion and not Pope's.

If Utah wants to have a big dick mentality. Need to go for Mark Pope

And that's fine. Doesn't hurt to reach out. Just saying it's very, very unlikely that he's going to consider a move like that. Please tag me if he does, in fact, interview for the job.

When Pope was an assistant at Wake Forest, he was begging Dave Rose to interview him as an assistant. He wasn't begging Krystowiak. He's already one of the hot names in college basketball. Would be more sensible to wait for a program that has the potential to be a final destination - maybe a UCLA, Indiana, or even a Texas. BYU is already a top 50 program, and has been for awhile. The next step up would be a top 25 coaching position, not a top 50 job. He already has that.

Suprised Utah fired dude.

I always thought he was a really m good coach, just hard to get talent to Utah. But then again they were a power for a while under majerus.

Said this in the beginning.
All about them convincing him

He had two really strong season (14-15, 15-16 with Kuzma) but he missed the tournament 5 years in a row after that. Given how much Utah was paying him, it's fair to say they weren't getting a good return on their investment.

Possibly but Utah could force his hand if they act quickly. I don't think it's a guarantee that Arizona would hire Stoudamire if Miller was fired. Honestly, I haven't given that scenario a lot of thought. I believe Miller will be back for 21-22.

I don’t think so either, but he might be willing to gamble on himself that he could get Pacific to the tournament beyond this year and boost his resume for future jobs.

Not like he couldn’t leave Utah for zona when/if it opens up just like he could from ewu. Just get a nice pay raise while he waits.

Stoudamire is at Pacific. Going to be a lot tougher to get to the NCAAT in the WCC with Gonzaga in the way. If he was offered the Utah job, I don't think he turns it down.

Moreso with Delon Wright and Poetle. Kuzma was a total nonfactor on their Sweet Sixteen team who barely played. But yes he parlayed those two years into a giant contract. he hasn't made the tournament after 2016 and hasn't even made the NIT after 2018.

I doubt Pope would go to Utah even for more money. When he leaves Utah it will be for a blueblood like Kentucky where he played.

Utah should go after Alex Jensen first, Johnnie Bryant who is with the Knicks second and Joe Pasternack 3rd.

Yes, but St Mary's and byu regularly make the ncaa tournament even with Gonzaga in the way.

Stoudamire hasn't shown himself worthy of a P5 job. In 5 years at Pacific they have been below average with only one winning season.

Never doubt the money. It's hard to say "no" if someone can double your salary. All of a sudden, a lateral move doesn't seem like a lateral move. Go ask Bronco

Mark Pope's style isn't something that could win a NC

Don't think his demand is what some of you think

What is his style?

Have you watched him or listen to how he views basketball.

He can build a capable program that can win a lot of games.
But college basketball is different than the NBA. That offensive execution won't ever be perfect. .

You need to have the ability to change the game on the defensive end

Pope would take the big center who can stretch the floor over the big who change the game on the Defensive end.

Matt Haarms.

Nothing against the guy
But I wouldn't want him in my program

Lmao @ u

Fun to look at old threads and see who was right.

- Utah hired Craig Smith, which duckboy and I both mentioned him as a lead candidate.
- Mark Pope never interviewed for the Utah job. I was right on that one, as well.
- Damon Stoudamire now has a P5 job at Georgia Tech.
