Post Something Controversial ITT

Does it bother anyone when the person in front of you has a whole cart, and I have 3 items and they don't let me go ahead of them. They're not obligated to, but I think that makes them an asshole.

But they won’t slow down, the only thing you’re accomplishing is putting others around at an increased risk. Which, I guess is fine since it means you don’t have to change lanes.

The self-centered view is making it just about you, and the person on your tail. You see it as you don’t have to move, and they can slow down. Your entire view of the situation is how it relates to you, even if it puts everybody else at risk. The person going 85 is absolutely just as selfish. I’m certainly not debating that - both parties in this situation are thinking only about themselves.

How is there not equal blame on the person driving 20 over the speed limit? 20 over is serious enough in NY that you could lose your license and face jail time. In other states, it’s a misdemeanor.

Because you drive fast, you want to absolve yourself of any blame. ‘Well, if they just got out of my way, everything would be fine’ doesn’t cut it.

I would and do let the 3 item person go ahead of me.

No reason to be a dick in that situation.

There is equal blame - which is what I said in the post you quoted. You’re both being selfish, and putting others at risk.

And I’m okay with being selfish in that case. I disagree that others are at risk, but that’s not worth arguing.

Bottom line, the speeder created the dangerous situation. I’m not helping it be less dangerous and am probably making it more dangerous, but I’m under no obligation to accommodate the entitled jerk behind me.

Then the speeders can pass on the right which carries no inherent risks. Good. So we agree.
I've already given you a clear example of how passing on the right can be dangerous. You're just too caught up in yourself to see it.

You're the only one who doesn't see yourself as the entitled jerk in this scenario.

People live life by a code they develop for themselves. I have a deep-seated desire not to bow to people who are doing the wrong thing. This arises from that.

I’m also very petty, which is a trait I cherish.

And again, it goes back to a complete disregard of the others around you because you don’t want to move. Congratulations, you made it a little harder for him, and a lot more dangerous for others when he inevitably weaves lanes to pass you on the right at 85.

Love the “well he did something wrong too!” argument you ended up at though. But we can digress at your request, things are rarely worth debating when you’re in the wrong, so I get it.

Somebody endangering lives now has to drive slower. If they decide to continue to be selfish and weave into traffic, that’s on them 100%. I know you don’t want to argue the legality of it, but no Trooper is going to say to the guy going 12 over, “well, why didn’t you let him pass you going 85? You FORCED him to hit the family of 5 next to him.”

You want to let yourself off the hook for excessively speeding and creating dangerous scenarios. I’m letting myself off the hook too, it’s human nature. If the speeder didn’t speed, there is no issue at any point. The speeder is the one creating the dangerous scenario, with or without a car in front of him.

I don’t go 85. The reason I’m arguing this is because you’re no different than the people going 66 in the left lane. I go 75 regularly, pass if I’m behind someone going slower, and get back over once I’ve passed. The “legality” of it isn’t what’s being discussed, and you can’t really flip-flop back and forth between being the law-abiding party and then also pull the “well, we’re both doing something wrong so blame him too.” You could also be ticketed for going as fast as you say you do, but that’s fine, because you’re not really interested in the legality of it, you’re interested in what you dictate is okay.

Of course they COULD slow down, if they do, congrats, you’re doing the Lord’s work. But - guessing your age - you have 15+/- years of proof that more often than not, they don’t slow down. And knowing that, it’s a ridiculous avenue to take in the argument and a completely disingenuous attempt at absolving yourself and coming off as righteous. You’ve almost made some halfhearted attempts at acknowledging that you’re just being (one of) the asshole(s) in the situation and that you’re definitely not in the right, but then backtrack to trying to come off as the good guy. Just own it.

I will move over sometimes but not others. Yesterday coming back from Nashville I was going between 80-85 but it was busy and the left lane was packed. Right line was less packed and some dude was flying behind me. I'm not getting over in that scenario just to get blocked into that right lane where I can't get back over considering the dude wanting to go 100 has nowhere to go anyway.

If I'm going 90 though and someone is faster behind me and there is no chance of me getting locked in if I move over I'll definitely do it.

do you really drive those speeds.

Reading your all's driving habits make me feel like a huge vagina. I can't remember the last time I drove 70.

Granted I live in a metro, but I feel like my average speed is 35.

I’m at least 8 over everywhere I go. If it’s a 30, I’m going 38. In a 55 I’ll push it a little to like 65-67. On the Thruway (65), I’m usually between 75 and 80 depending on traffic that day.

That's an odd number. It's even but odd. How did you come up with 8. Is 10 to fast or 5 too slow?

*i'm not trying to bust balls, just curious to driving habits.

Its all about the police. 10 over is when they start to look at you and if they’re in a bad mood, they’ll pull you over. So 8 over leaves a little margin for error. I’m a big fan of cruise control, so I set it whenever reasonable. As the speed limit increases, the amount over the speed limit you can go without being hassled increases, which is why I’m comfortable at 10or 12 over in a 55 and 15 over in a 65.

I’ve only been pulled over once in 14 years of driving and that was for a blown taillight

I once got a ticket for 1 mph over. It was Memphis zero tolerance day. They should apply that to violent crimes, but anyway, i was driving on Lamar and got a 36 in a 35. I have a picture on one of my hd's but too lazy to look for it. 196 dollar ticket."

My luck is so. If it were raining whores, I'd get hit by a queer.

I would have found the chief of police’s wife and shot her and sent him a picture.

Worst I’ve ever got was for going 74 in a 65. It was in the middle of nowhere, later identified as “Hope,” N.J., which made me even more irate.

Probably would’ve just given up on life if I got a ticket for going 1 over.
