Then tell your teacher friends to quit ****ing about being underpaid and working 70 hour weeks.

They can bitch all they want. Just don't listen to them. I don't listen to nurses whining. I always tell teachers to stop complaining about pay though. You knew the deal when you signed up.

The workload is heavily dependent on what you do. My wife puts in tons of hours outside of what she is actually paid for. She probably does legit work close to 60 hours a week. But it is what it is. Neither of us are the type to complain. Most of the changes in education (like more testing, NCLB, etc...) over the years hurts the kids more than anything.

Teaching is the one profession where tons of clueless people think they know what they are talking about because they could color well in Kindergarten and were so so at fractions. So while teachers complaining is an issue it is largely dwarfed by other people whining about education in general.

I had a grad project about stats and test scores and despite what people think America tests well if you really understand the numbers. Other countries look to the way we teach in terms of actual critical thinking and learning. That doesn't get clicks though.

How do teachers make time for all of that political talk I hear about that’s totally real and not made up?

I'm sure there are a few isolated cases of something inappropriate going down but in real life it generally happens the way I described earlier. But once people here something the outrage takes precedence over reason. Generally people are looking to be outraged though.

I thought about becoming a history teacher, because history is something I'm very passionate about. But not sure the pay or dealing with bratty kids is worth that.
Same here....LOve history. When I first attended college, I wanted to be a cardiologist...Pre-med. FOund out real quick a much, much different major was needed....

I love it. The money really isn't bad if you are smart with it. I would guess we are probably doing better than most in terms of savings balanced with vacations and everything else. We basically buy and do whatever we want. COL here helps with all of that though. I get it though. You aren't going to be driving luxury cars or things like that. The time I get to spend with my kids and for vacations and golf and stuff can't be beat though. Plus, I do enjoy the job itself and working with students.

When I was young I also worked a second job. For years I worked 7 days a week all year long. That helped at the time. Thankfully that really isn't necessary anymore.
Do you take summer pay all at once?

We don't get summer pay. We are simply a contracted employee so can choose whether to have our salary split up into 10 months or 12 months. Just is x divided by 12 instead of 10 and paid out that way. We just spread our salary out so we have a check every month. That may be what you mean though.

Yeah, working 60 hours a week on a teachers salary is something I’m glad I avoided. I’m thankful there are people willing to do that but I’m too lazy for that ****.

No chance I could do it. I wouldn't even want to be responsible for them much less try and teach them something. There's no telling how much Mom spent back into her class.
