He should have been dropped when he reclassified if that is the case. If it takes a couple years of development to make a significant impact on the court, a player isn’t a 5*.
You are dismissing factors in this...COVID for one. Especially for an incoming freshman, who in reality, should have been a senior in HS. Instead of a summer full of workouts, he was stuck in a dorm room..Instead of getting in multiple workouts, practices, he got none. No exh games as well. That played a role---But I get it---Your a Purdue guy. There's gonna be no common ground,or sense here, on your part. I understand Ivey, as a freshman, under went the same issues. But Ivey wasn't a should be senior in HS, either. That too, plays a role.
Then there is the PT, part. Painter didn't bury Ivey on the bench. Ivey was allowed a freedom, that Lander was not: 24mpg for Ivey, 10 for Lander. Miller IMO really mismanaged Lander...He played 14 minutes in IU's opener---He had 5 points, 2 assist, 1 steal and no turnovers....Then, well, he played 6 minutes next game.. Then Miller runs him there for 16 minutes vs Texas. Which made no sense. Follwed that with 18 vs Providence---Had 5 points, 4 assists, 1 steal and no turnovers..Solid. So whats Miller do?
Rewards him with 6 minutes vs FSU.
Then he plays 17 vs N Alabama, has 10 points, 4 assist, 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers...
Miller rewards that with 2 minutes vs Butler. MOF, after those 17 minutes vs N Alabama, Lander didn't reach double digits in minutes played for 10 straight games. Amazinly, he only played more than 5 minutes, ONCE....Vs Illinois.
Absurd. Especially when you consider how bad at times IU's backcourt was---especially Phinisee. Even more mindboggling was the fact that Miller played him 10+ minutes 9 times over the final 11 games. Makes no sense. You bury a kid for a month, then throw him to the wolves..What type of results did you expect?
Then he has two, solid back to back games vs Michigan/MSU---and what does Miller do? Plays him a TOTAL of 7 minutes vs Purdue/Rutgers...
Maybe Lander was rated to high...He did drop though after the reclass---and was 81st RSCI---Ivey was 87th.
Bottom line---Lander was mismanaged IMO, especially early. He should have played more---a lot more. Especially with the struggles of Phin. But he didn't. Thats on Miller. Not to mention the offense Miller ran, really didn't suit Landers game. I think that changes with Woody.
At the end of the day, its silly to "write off" a kid after one year, in a pandemic year to boot. If he has the same issues/struggles this year---your claim has much more merit. Until then, not much TBH.
