Fair take. Painter has had several head scratching losses (VCU & Little Rock) but also has had terrible luck with injuries to his two best teams. The 2009/2010 team with Hummel absolutely would have made a FF, but none of Painter's other 13 teams had legitimate chances to make a FF IMO. He needs to do a better job recruiting a few top 50 players to go along with the normal 100-150 guys he gets to have a realistic shot at a FF in the future. If he can land Malik Hall, I like his chances in a couple years, provided the young guys he has now develop. This is true. A lot of coaches suddenly found success(tourney) after years of futility... Jay Wright is one. BUT...I mean he did go to the Elite 8 in year five....Final Four, four years later. I mean what is crazy is Wrights only been past the SW 16 , four times. BUT...he has done so.
I think Painters a fine coach. And who knows, had RH not gotten hurt, maybe he has his Elite 8/FF. Hell maybe even a title. Maybe if Haas stays healthy, he gets past the SW16. Who knows. But even then, he's had some good teams more than capable; 2011, and last years. He's lost with some solid teams early; 2016 loss to Little Rock. So even with the imjury bug, he's still had some pretty darn good teams fall quite short.

Agree. We've seen some ridiculously talented teams over the years across college basketball that didn't make the Final Four. Such is the nature of a one and done tournament, isn't it?Saying they absolutely would’ve made the final four is a bit much
You can feel free to leave if you don’t like the posters here. We won’t miss ya.Man, Hail used to be a decent poster. Now, he’s just another Snu.
The season can’t get here soon enough.
Thanks for the authorization. I wasn't sure if I was allowed. I think I'll stick around though to converse with those posters who enjoy intelligent discussion. You can feel free to leave if you don’t like the posters here. We won’t miss ya.

Matt Painter is a good major-conference coach. He's not bad and he's not elite. People who want him fired or think that he's underachieving are nuts or trolling. He's a top-20ish coach in the country.A deeper look at Matt Painter's NCAA tournament history:
2005-06 - DNP - Painter's first season. Keady left him a bad roster and it got worse with both David Teague and Carl Landry out for the year with injury
2006-07 - 9 seed (KenPom rank 30) - beat 8 seed Arizona (KenPom 24) - lost to 1 seed Florida (KenPom 1). Florida went on to win their 2nd consecutive national championship
2007-08 - 6 seed (KenPom 30) - beat 11 seed Baylor (KenPom 41) - lost to 3 seed Xavier (KenPom 15) - Xavier lost in the Elite 8 to 1 seed UCLA
2008-09 - 5 seed (KenPom 18) - beat 12 seed Northern Iowa (KenPom 83) - beat 4 seed Washington (KenPom 17) - Lost to 1 seed UConn (KenPom 2) - UConn reached the Final Four
2009-10 - 4 seed (KenPom 15) - beat 13 seed Sienna (KenPom 59) - beat 5 seed Texas A&M (KenPom 16) - Lost to 1 seed Duke (KenPom 1) - Duke won the National Title
2010-11 - 3 seed (KenPom 9) - beat 14 seed St. Peters (KenPom 137) - lost to 11 seed VCU (KenPom 53) - VCU made the stunning Final Four run
2011-12 - 10 seed (KenPom 30) - beat 7 seed St. Mary's (KenPom 34) - lost to 2 seed Kansas (KenPom 4) - Kansas reached the national championship game
2012-13 - DNP - lost year 1
2013-14 - DNP - lost year 2
2014-15 - 9 seed Purdue (KenPom 44) - lost to 8 seed Cincinnati (KenPom 43) - UC lost in the next round to 1 seed UK
2015-16 - 5 seed Purdue (KenPom 9) - lost to 12 seed Ark-Little Rock (KenPom 56) - Sick
2016-17 - 4 seed Purdue (KenPom 19) - beat 13 seed Vermont (KenPom 63) - beat 5 seed Iowa State (KenPom 17) - lost to 1 seed Kansas (KenPom 6) - Kansas lost in the Elite 8 to 3 seed Oregon
2017-18 - 2 seed Purdue (KenPom 5) - beat 15 seed Cal State-Fullerton (KenPom 162) - beat 10 seed Butler (KenPom 20) - Lost to 3 seed Texas Tech (KenPom 11) - TTU lost to national champ Villanova in the Elite 8
To Summarize:
9-3 as the higher seed
3-7 as the lower seed
In 4 Sweet 16 appearances, Purdue has lost to three 1 seeds and a 3 seed (seeding has never broken for Purdue in the Sweet 16)
What does this all mean? Painter has basically played to seed in the NCAA tournament. But unlike Keady (who was terrible early and actually pretty good later in his career), Painter is trending poorly compared to seed. It's not enough for me to write him off yet (after all, he is just 48 years old). But he does need to break through to be considered an upper echelon coach.,

Super pumped for today! Locker room looks sick!Big day for IU to seal up the top 2019 recruits and put the best foot forward on 2020-2021 kids.
Interesting that Trey Galloway isn’t making the trip down. Still shocked that kid got a MSU offer though I don’t think it’s committable at this time.
First and Lander are major major 2021 talents so it’s good to have them come down.
IU tripled the production budget for the event today. Archie is getting what he needs to improve the program. The new locker room is going to be one of the best in the country. Should be seeing pictures of that over the next couple of days

I admire you for continuing to engage in this type of discussion.
Fair point. That team is the only one of Painter's that I truly felt had FF talent and that I expected to make it there as one of the top 4 teams in the country (before Hummel's injury). He had some teams that could have made it to a FF, but that I didn't think had the horses to do so.Let me rephrase that because this is a good post and that came off trolly.
Sometimes the elite teams don’t make Final 4s. There have been teams better than that Purdue team that have came up short so nothing is a given.
This kid is one of my favorite recruits in this class.Looking like Timme's visit schedule will end up as this:
September 29th: Alabama
October 6th: Gonzaga
October 13th: Arizona
October 20th: Illinois
Not finalized yet though.
There's prob an average of 2 or 3 programs per Power6 who'd hire Painter quick, should he become available next season. Then, prob another 260 or so lesser D1 schools who'd do the same.Coveted by................
Man, Hail used to be a decent poster. Now, he’s just another Snu.
Fair post...he apparently doesn’t do enough to give his team a better seed in the tournament.

I'd rather he Zona or Illinois tbh. Gonzaga usually plays ~8 relevant nationally televised games per year and Bama allows half of it's conference games to be locked under the SECN.
It's no fun rooting for Arizona to waste (more) legit talent, so I'm hoping he pops for Underwood and the Ill.
Kid vm looks the part of a Gonzaga Bulldog.

Agree with half of these two statements.
Most of the blame lies with the coach, but part of the blame also lies with the conference.
Seeding can be everything in the tourney; your conference, like your scheduling, is either an anchor or an assist.

Only the ones who lack the maturity to have a civil conversation. Will you still constantly bitch and complain about posters? Hopefully not.
@boiler1987
How about this.....
We bet on Michigan vs NW and Indiana vs Purdue. If we split, no one wins. I need Michigan and Indiana to win to win, you need northwestern and Purdue.
We should both feel pretty safe. You get 10 win northwestern and a team playing one of the worst football programs in P5 history.
Hail... just give it a rest man. Lol.@boilerzz
Or any Purdue fan really. What’s there to lose? Certainly the gap between Indiana and Purdue is wider than any gap between Michigan and NW??

You seem to bitch and complain quite a bit. Think a break would be good for you.Only the ones who lack the maturity to have a civil conversation.
But we were told how good Northwestern is after they beat Purdue. Why not bet him? Obviously you’re scared.
Because I didn't say Northwestern was good. That was a couple of other Purdue fans. Hail struggles with reading comprehension or has a poor memory (or both). But we were told how good Northwestern is after they beat Purdue. Why not bet him? Obviously you’re scared.

You said northwestern was better than Michigan and all of you syabourdue is better than Indiana.
Please provide evidence...and I don't mean the post where I clearly was joking and clarified that stance a couple of weeks ago.
