Fair take. Painter has had several head scratching losses (VCU & Little Rock) but also has had terrible luck with injuries to his two best teams. The 2009/2010 team with Hummel absolutely would have made a FF, but none of Painter's other 13 teams had legitimate chances to make a FF IMO. He needs to do a better job recruiting a few top 50 players to go along with the normal 100-150 guys he gets to have a realistic shot at a FF in the future. If he can land Malik Hall, I like his chances in a couple years, provided the young guys he has now develop.

Sometimes the elite teams don’t make Final 4s. There have been teams better than that Purdue team that have came up short so nothing is a given.
Agree. We've seen some ridiculously talented teams over the years across college basketball that didn't make the Final Four. Such is the nature of a one and done tournament, isn't it?

In 4 Sweet 16 appearances, Purdue has lost to three 1 seeds and a 3 seed (seeding has never broken for Purdue in the Sweet 16)
What does this all mean? Painter has basically played to seed in the NCAA tournament. But unlike Keady (who was terrible early and actually pretty good later in his career), Painter is trending poorly compared to seed. It's not enough for me to write him off yet (after all, he is just 48 years old). But he does need to break through to be considered an upper echelon coach.,

Matt Painter is a good major-conference coach. He's not bad and he's not elite. People who want him fired or think that he's underachieving are nuts or trolling. He's a top-20ish coach in the country.

Big day for IU to seal up the top 2019 recruits and put the best foot forward on 2020-2021 kids.
Interesting that Trey Galloway isn’t making the trip down. Still shocked that kid got a MSU offer though I don’t think it’s committable at this time.
First and Lander are major major 2021 talents so it’s good to have them come down.

They look amazing...Oladipo and Zeller had something to do with them too. I’ll be interested to see what they did.
Always nice to have multiple touch screen 100” TVs and 48” TVs at every locker. Seems a bit overkill but gots to keep up with the Joneses
53 different programs have made it past the Sweet 16 since Purdue last did. Painter is a solid regular season coach but anyone who can’t call out Purdue’s lack of postseason success is wearing black and gold goggles.
Fair point. That team is the only one of Painter's that I truly felt had FF talent and that I expected to make it there as one of the top 4 teams in the country (before Hummel's injury). He had some teams that could have made it to a FF, but that I didn't think had the horses to do so.
This kid is one of my favorite recruits in this class.
I'd rather he Zona or Illinois tbh. Gonzaga usually plays ~8 relevant nationally televised games per year and Bama allows half of it's conference games to be locked under the SECN.
It's no fun rooting for Arizona to waste (more) legit talent, so I'm hoping he pops for Underwood and the Ill.

There's prob an average of 2 or 3 programs per Power6 who'd hire Painter quick, should he become available next season. Then, prob another 260 or so lesser D1 schools who'd do the same.
Agree with half of these two statements.
Most of the blame lies with the coach, but part of the blame also lies with the conference.
Seeding can be everything in the tourney; your conference, like your scheduling, is either an anchor or an assist.
