*Official* B1G Off-season Thread

Anytime I see someone act like CAM isn't a good coach because last years team struggled, it causes me to immediately realize how invalid their opinion is when it comes to basketball!

I'm seriously lost for words sometimes thinking about how people come to their conclusions. They completely ignore the fact that the previous years team was just as bad, if not worse. They also ignore that last years team lost the 3 best players from the previous years team that was ridiculously bad. Even though 2 of those players are in the NBA and one is in the starting lineup of one of the best teams.

How someone who truly understands basketball cant see the amazing strides last years teams made is beyond me. I cant think of many 500% seasons where I felt so much progress had been made in such a short time. Now, that's not saying they were great by the end of the year....they weren't even close to being even good imo. However, looking at all the holes on that team and not realizing that in all realities....they were lucky to win 12 games.

With what he started the season with, I couldn't be more impressed with how well he coached that team.
Miller may turn out ok but reading this makes me think you have a schoolboy crush on the IU coach.

Within a few posts of each other we have one IU fan saying they were really a 20 win tream and another saying they were really lucky to win 13.

I guess reading comprehension isn't a strongpoint for you? Pretty much anyone who reads at a 3rd grade level should be able to understand the multiple times I mentioned what he started with compared with how they ended.

But hey, you do you

Well first of all thank you for the gracious allowance for me to be me. Really kind of you.

Second - how a IU started was getting their ass handed to them by Ft. Wayne ( yes that is an actual D1 team) and Indiana State.

Third - how IU finished was getting shown the door by Rutgers aka the perennial last place team in the league.

The only way to make this leap that this equals an amazing transformation is to be a fanboy.

Nah, not really. The only way to get to where you did is to completely leave out any context. But hey, I get it, you’re a Purdue fanboy and adding context destroys your narrative. You just have to understand the game of basketball to get to the conclusions some did about IU last year. Be better.

Nice what is that for exactly? USA basketball?
I think it's called USA East Coast and they do an annual exhibition tour against some national B teams if I'm remembering correctly.

Stefanovic actually was competing at tryouts for the Serbian U-20 team earlier this summer but had to leave early due to a death in the family. That could have been a good chance for him to compete at a relatively high level - so I'm glad to see he's getting some action with this tour in August.

Who? I feel like I haven’t heard his name before. Freshman? Red shirt freshman? Is he someone who you think will see time this year?

Nice shouldn’t hurt getting some games in. Was Wheeler able to play in the college games thing last summer?

Purdue sucks

Agreed. I don't think they have enough talent to finish ahead of IU, either.

Coming off redshirt. Originally from Crown Point. I actually think he could cut into some of the minutes people are expecting Cline to play.

I was really impressed with how he looked in Taipei last summer - although I had pretty low expectations coming in. He's definitely a shooter first and foremost, but closer to Mathias than Cline in terms of his overall game, IMO. He shot it decent in Taipei in limited minutes.

Should be interesting to see how the minutes get distributed between Eastern, Cline, Hunter, and Stefanovic as things get going.

No, not a bad thing at all. Wheeler played sparingly in the WUG - about 10 mpg in mostly mop-up duty. But showed good range and that's apparently continued through this year (but we all know how offseason "reports" go).

Speaking of which, what's the latest on Davis? You guys expecting him to be a primary guy or is the Morgan small-ball lineup looking more likely?

Looks like he won't be a full go at the start of the season so Fitzner and Morgan will likely man 5 with some of Race thompson here and there. Davis should come in i'd think around start of conference.

I'm sure Archie knows better than I do, but would think a lineup with Morgan at the 5 would be pretty tough to defend for most teams in the conference, even if you are giving up some things defensively.

I can't remember - did Race end up coming early last year and shirting?

Yes and yes. They actually seemed to get better when Davis went down. Now was it a product of getting someone to cover better at the 5 or was it a product of the whole team getting used to the pack line i don't know. It seemed even under Crean when we had Hartman at the 5 that the team did fairly well unless they went up against say a Purdue with Swanigan and Haas. Could be a product of the way rosters are trending. Race did come in fall of last year and redshirted as he was banged up a bit with injuries. Won't expect a ton but think he'll be able to get 5-10minutes/game.

Would think that even in those rare matchups, the tradeoff of Morgan dragging a more traditional center - like Teske, Ward, or Wesson, for example - out to the perimeter is a net-gain for Indiana.

Yes, Race came early and took a redshirt year. Hopefully that extra time pays off for him.

I am interested to see Fitzner at the 5, Morgan at the 4 and Smith at the 3. That's a pretty big, mobile core of guys there. Add in Romeo and it could be a tough group to defend.

When Fitzner is out there, he should also be able to pull big men out to the perimeter and clear space. He is currently the best shooter on the team and will be much needed.

I think it can with a traditional center but not a team with 2 that can both play well. Morgan being as good as he is can get a guy into foul trouble but when you have 2 guys able to give 10 fouls it causes trouble, especially if Morgan gets into foul trouble himself. Having Romeo and some more guys this year who can create their own shot should alleviate problems of Morgan having to do so much.

Next year with Brooks/TJD/Smith/Hunter will be a pretty nice 4 man combo with size.

Still need some guards to offset, but it is blatantly obvious Archie and staff feel the teams needs to become much longer and athletic for his system. Doesn't get much longer and athletic than those four. Phinisee/Green have some hops and speed to them as well.

And Anderson. If they can get those two committed before the end of the year would give the staff all spring to sell playing with two 5* forwards to an elite 2 guard.

I feel like you’re tilting at windmills with these Purdue ban bets recently (unless I missed some bold predictions or something)

Proudopete (Purdue fan) offered me a ban bet that Indiana would finish below Purdue.

Pig1960 said I would make excuses for not taking the ban bet.

Well, I though my avatar and name made it pretty clear I’m a Michigan fan so I offered pig1960 a bet that Michigan would finish higher.

Morgan is good on the perimeter, but Fitzner is likely even better. One of the current team reports we got last night in chat is that Fitzner's 3 pt shot is proving to be a problem for the defense to deal with. He's 6'10" and has never shot below 40% in his college career, and that's with 300+ attempts.

He also shoots 70% or better from the ft line. Just think he's going to be a huge weapon for IU this year, mainly because he frees up space for both Romeo and Morgan to operate.

He's likely going to be a better threat as a shooter on the perimeter; but from what I've seen from Morgan and what I've read about Fitzner, Morgan is much more of a threat to attack defenders off the dribble and create foul trouble while Fitzner will predominantly a catch-and-shoot guy. But I could certainly be wrong.

No, I think what you said is accurate and what he meant.

No, that is exactly how I see it playing out.

No thats correct. Morgan a bit beefier to deal with bumping down low. Last year he was pretty crafty in getting to the rim and finishing through contact. In fact i think thats what he excelled at and helped improve Indiana.

I actually thought he was a bit better defending the post than he got credit for, also. Especially at his height.
