***Official B1G Off-Season Thread***

I don't know. I'm sure Johnny Davis is fine w/ his $20M. Second contract be damned. I don't know where he's projected, but if it's lottery, you go. Stupid not too.
I mean sure, a $20M headstart on life is great....But with these kids, that $$ isn't normally just about you. And look as Shaq said, kids spend that money as if its endless.....and its not. Especially if you do not get that second contract.

I look at Romeo---has made close to $24 million....And that ain't shit to sneeze at. Its life changing money for sure---But that second contract is generational changng $$$. And as good as Langfrod was in HS, and at IU----he's basically gonna become a journeyman guy after his rookie contract expires.

I think for kids like Langford/JHS, a 2nd year would have far benefitd their chances at a prolonged NBA career, that involved serious money.

If you're a lottery pick, you go. No other option.

You still haven't answered whether JHS is a lottery projection.

Don't kid yourself here.

A lot of these guys are gonna have different roles in college vs. the NBA. Starting to focus on that NBA role, practicing/training with all the resources of the NBA, and playing against the best in the world is almost always the better way to develop their NBA game.

And that doesn't even take into account the risk aspect of not striking now.

Expected obviously---But he's not NBA ready. As one home board guy said---"If its about getting $$,and being inthe NBA, then sure....But if it about STAYING in the NBA----Nope."

Lottery pick $$ is good---no doubt. But as we all know, its that second contract thats important.

I have seen him anywhere from 13th-30th. Questions about his perimeter game(3 ball), finishing at the rim, and shot selection. He only shot like 44% from 2----and when you're an attacking guard, who's primary go to is a mid-rnge game? Yeah, 44% is not very good. But at 6'6", 220---he's an attactive player. But just not sure he's athletic enough, can finish at the rim good enough,to be an impact guy...I wouldn't be surprised at all if he fell on Draft night.

Don't get me wrong, very good player---and probably the best frosh in the league. Just not sold he's ready for the NBA. Handles at times were soft.
Is he ready to lead a team and play significant minutes? No. He is a projected lottery pick and he did very well in PNR game that Woodson played. He'll be in the NBA for a long time at some capacity. I'll never understand people complaining about guys leaving who will be a lottery pick. They're not going to develop any better in college, they'll develop slower and get worse tendencies.

Idk but he’s definitely getting very well taken care of.
I figured he’d be looking for more but did not expect this.
I say good riddance! 😜

And hire who? That’s some copium lol
Someone whose name is not Juwan Howard. He has taken the program on a steady decline and it’s only going to get worse from here. If Notre Dame basketball can hire Schrewsberry we can find someone competent too

From 2019 to the 2021 B1G championship and elite 8 was not a “steady decline”. Hard to go up much from there but obviously the last season and change was concerning outside of the sweet 16 run.

“Someone not named Juwan” and “someone competent” is just silliness lol. UM could do wayyyyy worse.
Shrewsberry could end up being good but has proven less than Juwan at this point.

Tom Crean is available Michigan, and he has Jim’s vote.

I bet he’d even put a hyphen in his last name. Tom Crean-Harbaugh, or Harbaugh-Crean. Just to emphasize the family aspect of the hiring.

one of the Michigan fans that posts here was *thrilled* that Beilein was gone because Howard would actually draw big time talent.

was that this greenemarine fellow?

Say what? That wasn’t me. I was ok with the Howard hire at the time. Not thrilled but not upset with it especially given the timing after Beilein left. Preferred taking the swing on his upside over guys like Cooley or Lavell Jordan. That said the program has gotten consistently worse and next year will be probably be our least talented and worse team since the Ellerbe era. Juwan had one great year (with a lot of Beilein leftovers) and other than that year has a 56% win percentage in his other 3 years.

Howard have any more kids coming that he’ll put on scholarship?

That’s served iowa well

I heard HD was portalling quite awhile ago. Still surprising to see.

Final KenPom ranks:

Under Beilein
2018 - 7
2019 - 6

Under Juwan
2020 - 16
2021 - 3 (Thank God for COVID pauses)
2022 - 27
2023 - 44
2024 - ?

Illinois will still be irrelevant
Whatever helps you cope with the reality of your program😂

Hey, it’ll give you much more time to get into college hockey! So it’s not all bad…

Not complaining..Just giving my opinion. Look, $20 million is a shit ton of $$$---Until you start living the life of someone with that kind of $$. Then its not so much. My viiew is from a financial stand point....For me and you, $20M would take care of us, and others for the rest of our lives. We understand its a "one time thing"---So we would the life of such. Why? Becasue we have lived most of our lives on an income of average to above. When you start talking about a 19-year old kid, its a different approach.

I don't think it's fair to assume he'll blow through his money. I also don't think it matters if he does, he's making the correct decision from every single measurable metric that exists.

I'm not...Look at Langford. He was drafted by an organization that could afford to string him along---And Boston did just that. He rarely played....Then got even more buried...Then got hurt. His first two years in the league were basically spent sitting the bench. Sort of hard to develop much doing that.

PLUS, you are now trying to get better, vs the best dudes in the world. Not the easiest thing to do.

Name me one kid drafted in the LOTTERY felt their role was gonna change? Very few, if any kids are intelligent enough to figure this out. Remember these kids have spent their entire life being the guy...That mentality is not gonna change, even if you tell them.

Again, prolonged NBA career, with serious $$, is different than prolonged NBA career.

Ability to practice every single day against the best in the world, check.

Ability to make a lot more money, check.

Ability to play more carefree as a devastating injury won’t cost you your draft position moving forward, check.

Yep, not seeing much downside here…

Where did I assume he'd blow threw his $$$? I said $20M is a lot, until you start to ive the life of someone who has $20M. Again, rarely is the $$ these kids make, just about them. Its about many others. You and I have lived a lifetime on an average or above average salary...If we were to hit the lotto for $20M, we woukldn't suddenly start living some lavish lifestyle.

Why?

Because we understand this was a one time thing.

Kids live the life of that type of $$$, feeling its always gonna be there. Then suddenly that $5M a year contract, is a one year contract for $3M.....Then $2M....It can quickly spiral.

Do I think JHS does this---or happens to him? No. I have no clue how the young man was raised in reference to $$$. But it has happened to many of many kids.

Never said there was a downside....

Caleb Love to Indiana?

Not sure my heart or TV could withstand a back court of XJ and Love....

I'm surprised Romeo Langford is still in the league.

How have you been coping with the reality of Illinois’s program over the last 2 decades? Did watching other sports that Illinois happens to be good at help? 😂

TBH, me too.....Kid was tough as nails in HS. Saw him play through some tough shit...At IU as well. But man he seems made of glass now.
