Gil, I am going to take a wait and see approach. I'll say this, it can't be much worse than last season, so I'm sure it will be better.there is a difference to this years team. in their exhibition game they played defense the whole game rather than getting lax with a big lead. they held them to 22 points in the 1st half and 24 points in the 2nd. holding them to 20.1%from 3 and 29%,
they had 15 steals and forced 26 TO's. last year they couldn't stop a HS team from scoring.
they brought in a defensive specialist to work with the team, Even Coach Davis came in to work on the full court press.
scoring will not be a problem, now its up to the players to do what they were taught to do.
Jordan DNP because of a deep thigh bruise
Wieskamp led the team in scoring Cook was 2nd but led the team in assists with 7 and rebounds with 9 in 21 minutes. he also went 1-2 from 3. nobody played more than 21.

prediction 12-8 BT 10-1 OOC 22-9 overall has Iowa does not have issues in scoring like others have. 5th place at best 7th at worst.
just on experience alone and having a solid SR leader in Baer will be the best thing for this team. people tend to over look what Jok meant to that teamGil, I am going to take a wait and see approach. I'll say this, it can't be much worse than last season, so I'm sure it will be better.
the last time Iowa went to 3 straight NCAAT was in the 96-97, 97-98 and 98-99 seasons and that coach was run off after reaching the Sweet 16. Fran did in the 2013-14 season, 14-15 season and 15-16 season. the 11 seasons before Fran took over they had only had 3 total NCAAT appearances with only 1 win. plus in that period the only had 3 .500 + seasons in BT play vs Fran who had 5 straight .500 + BT season. And missing the NCAA tournament again.
they will play better this year than last and that's all I will say on that. Will Iowa go undefeated at home this year in conference play?
Holtmann looks like he may be a terrifyingly good Xs and Os guy. Impressive showing by OSU.As someone that doesn't follow Cincy or OSU overly closely, last night kind of went the opposite of my expectations. I did expect a really low scoring game, but I expected Cincy to be the team that got key stops and was able to eke out a little more offence
Cincy's O (outside of Cumberland) is nothing to write home about, but I was still really impressed with Ohio State's half court D. Holtmann is doing good things there. Their starting 5 is better than I expected with the two Wessons, Jackson, Muhammad, and Young. I'm interested to see how Muhammad improves as the year goes on. Also, as someone else in this thread pointed out, Young contributed so many plays at key moments last night.
I know it's early, but this consistent strategy by fran is one that i love. keep his best players on the bench for half the game to make sure the scrubs get in there.nobody played more than 21.

Yes he does! Pretty ballsy to start the season off the way he did. IU may end up egretting not grabbing two ex-Butler coaches. He looks to be legit and an punchers chance of coach of the year this year.Holtmann looks like he may be a terrifyingly good Xs and Os guy. Impressive showing by OSU.
Will Iowa play defense?
Can Illinois prevent 70% scoring on the interior?
Northwestern plays basketball?
You forgot to mention that Iowa has one of the best players in the conference. Expecting more improvement from Cook.just on experience alone and having a solid SR leader in Baer will be the best thing for this team. people tend to over look what Jok meant to that team
Leading scorer scoring 25% of the teams total
2nd in steals
2nd in rebounds
2nd in assists
when they needs someone to take charge or make the shot they all looked to Jok.
last season there was no one to take charge or make that shot. that year that Jok was a SR Baer was coming off the BT 6th MOY when he was
1st in Blocked shots
1st in rebounding
1st in steals
2nd in assists
last season Fran tried to use him as a starter and he missed the 1st 6 games because of a hand injury of which he never recovered.
there was no true backup to Jordan. this year there are just 11 scholarship players to be used and they are 2 deep at each position, Fredrick suffered a rib injury in practice by trying to draw a charge from Cook.
like they effort but question the kids decision making.
Connor and Wiescamp are solid defenders, now how much the others improves is yet to be seen. even tonight game means something on the defensive end.
Cook is very good but he also led the team in TO's last season. he needs to fix that and work on what the NBA people told him, be more aggressive in rebounding, being a TEAM LEADER. being the best you have to play your best in all aspects of the game. You forgot to mention that Iowa has one of the best players in the conference. Expecting more improvement from Cook.
Can't let an Iowa game pass without betting the over.
All that from one game? Really? Coach of the year?Yes he does! Pretty ballsy to start the season off the way he did. IU may end up egretting not grabbing two ex-Butler coaches. He looks to be legit and an punchers chance of coach of the year this year.
I’m a fan of their new place, though! Looks nice. They’ve really put up some dough to upgrade football and basketball facilities.jesus, look at all those empty seats in this northwestern game lol
Stanford of the Midwest.I’m a fan of their new place, though! Looks nice. They’ve really put up some dough to upgrade football and basketball facilities.
Conference coach of the year. Sure, anybody else in the conference have a win as good as that one? He’s certainly the front runner right now.All that from one game? Really? Coach of the year?
who are these scrub players you are talking about?I know it's early, but this consistent strategy by fran is one that i love. keep his best players on the bench for half the game to make sure the scrubs get in there.
Nunge is redshirting? That's interesting.who are these scrub players you are talking about?
the scrubs from last year are gone Uhl, Ellingson and Wagner. the latter 2 transferred out.
these are the starters by rankings
PG JR Bohannon 4* by ESPN 2nd leading scorer
SG RSJR Moss 4* by ESPN 4th leading scorer
SF FR Wieskamp top 100 4* by ESPN # 42 by Rivals
PF JR Cook #38 by ESPN top 100 by Rivals leading scorer and rebounding
C SO Garza top 100 by ESPN 4* by Rival 3rd leading scorer and leading shot blocker on the team
off the bench
PG Connor top 100 by ESPN 4* by Rivals
SF Baer as a RSSO was the BT 6th MOY
PF JR Pemsl 5th leading scorer
F/C JR Kriener
PG/SG/SF JR Dailey will be the only scholarship players playing
PG/SG/WG FR Fredrick is RS'ing just as I had hoped
PF/C SO Nunge is RS'ing
I don't see any scrubs not with the top 6 being 4*'s 4 of them ESPN Top 100 players. 2 of them playing this season with Wieskamp starting at the SF position.
Did you forget Iowa had a whole team of bigs?Nunge is redshirting? That's interesting.
yeah probably a good idea to shorten the rotation, makes senseDid you forget Iowa had a whole team of bigs?
Garza in the same class looks to be able to withstand the Big10 a little better.
Looking forward to you talking about how half your team has "head injuries" when you lose a few gamesthis will also spread out the classes. this leaves Fran with these in the Front court
Garza, Kriener, Cook and Pemsl.
tonight Cook 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks with just 1 TO,
Wieskamp is the leading scorer with 15 points 4-6 from 3.
hoping Cook can do this every game.
Garza and Bohannon need more game conditioning to get into shape after Garza being cleared to practice and play Oct 27th. Bohannon just got cleared to play Monday.
TO's were the problem tonight having 16 TO's their smaller lineup caused them problems. they held UMKC to 61 points. Iowa did not do that to often last season.
Imagine touting Nunge as a 7 footer that can play the 3 and knock down 3s...then he redshirts to open minutes for scrubs like Pemsyl and Kreiner.Nunge is redshirting? That's interesting.
Looking forward to you talking about how half your team has "head injuries" when you lose a few games
Iowa cost me a 6 game parlay by not covering.
Advertising the fact that you bet on Iowa to cover is the ultimate self own.Iowa cost me a 6 game parlay by not covering.
I've probably bet over on the Iowa over 10 times the past year and tonight was the only under i believe. got it back thanks to illinois overAdvertising the fact that you bet on Iowa to cover is the ultimate self own.
It's a shame I will take with me to my grave.Advertising the fact that you bet on Iowa to cover is the ultimate self own.
they finished finished in the top half 5 times and finished tied for 3rd twice.Iowa was the 3rd worst B1G team ats last year. They have been top half in the B1G ats once in 5 years.
Don’t trust Fran.
they finished finished in the top half 5 times and finished tied for 3rd twice.
in Fran's 8 seasons.
