*Official* B1G In-Season Thread

Yup. We're talking about Painter. 2nd tier might be a bit of a stretch. Could be third...
It must be very painful for you to know that our 3rd tier coach has beaten your "blueblood" program 10 of the last 11 times they've faced each other.

Whatever makes you feel better about 2nd tier matty.

I’m fine with 2nd tier Gard. He’s young and only has a few years under his belt. Matty has been at Purdue 14 years. 14 years.
Gard is no Bo Ryan that's for sure. I wonder how long the Wisconsin AD will let him ride the coattails of his mentor? For the next 14 years I hope.

The list of guys with 3 or more Big Ten COY awards:

Gene Keady 7
Bob Knight 5
Matt Painter 4
Bo Ryan 4
Tom Izzo 3
Thad Matta 3

Evidently a few people must think Painter is a pretty good coach.

Painter has done that with Purdue. Nothing to show for it. Gard will end up better than ol Matty.

But given the assumption that is true, I'm trying to reconcile how Beilein and Izzo are also clearly better than Painter at game management and talent development and yet over the last half decade, Painter has won more games in Big Ten play. Surely Painter is pretty good at something, right?

Painter won "more reg season games in B1G play over the last 5 years", but schedules are unbalanced, injuries aren't considered, etc. Again, not taking anything away from Purdue or Painter, but you can't just say "Purdue won more regular season games with less talent, so he HAS to be a better game manager and talent developer"

He's definitely "pretty good at something". He definitely surprised me this year, because I didn't expect them to win a share of the title at all. I just believe he's a tier below Izzo/Beilein, no matter how many regular season wins he has over the last X-years.

According to KenPom, Purdue has had a more difficult conference schedule than MSU 4 of the last 5 years.

I've yet to see a Purdue fan say Painter is better than Izzo or Beilein. I don't think I've seen anyone who said he is as good as either (being in the same tier is not saying that no matter how many times Snu says it does). I just take issue with those who say they are clearly better at every facet of the game. He is clearly inferior as a recruiter and that is part of coaching. Some of the other parts I think are more debatable (again, that does not say he's better).

You’re penalizing coaches who get better recruits when it comes to player development. Its a dumb argument.
Wtf? I'll dumb it down for you. Coach A gets five star players. Coach B gets three-star players. Coach A gets more players in the NBA than Coach B. That's been the point all along. You want to argue whether it's true?

From that you somehow concluded that I said coach A can't develop players, or 3 stars can't get to the NBA......or some other dumb shit.

GTFO. This conversation was already going off the rails.
what's the matter can't stand the truth about where Burke was rated? lets not act like Burke was some unknown BB player the Bielien turned into a superstar
Burke's FR season he was named a FR AA, Burke was never a unknown.

to get credit is to take a unknown then after 4 years he is named a All BT player, that is called developing players. not a player that plays 1-2 years before going to the NBA.

@bMORE607 is struggling with reading comprehension today.

Somewhat different sure, would he have gotten to the NBA? Probably. But thats all revisionist theory. Crean coached him. He gets credit for it.
What I find funny is that most of the IU folks have and would again take the complete opposite position if the topic was UK and Coach Cal.

a little per 40 numbers

metric: nojel/Rob
pts 10.6/10.4
ast 3.5/4.3
TO 2.1/1.8
reb 8/4.3
stl 1.68/1.63
fg% .486/.374
3pt%.000/.330

Tells me Rob was the better PG.

Depends on the player but 9 months to me is a little different than 3 years.

Do you think Oladipo's career would've turned out any different if he was coached by Matt Painter, Tom Izzo, or John Beilein? I don't.
Picking one guy and pointing him out isn't a good way of proving a point. Oladipo was a very self driven/motivated person. He would have been great wherever he went. Much like Biggie. More data points are needed to quantify if someone is good or bad at developing players.

Matt is still young comparatively.

Yes, when you quantify a coach based off of all aspects. Recruiting included. That's the only area IMO where the other two have done better. How much of that is because of Purdue and it's challenges I really don't know.

Delusional.

Q.Devonte, we've asked you what has been different for you these last few games. Is there anything you're not doing that's maybe helped you out a little bit more these last couple weeks?
DEVONTE GREEN: No.

Q.Any bad habits you've tried to eliminate or anything you've just tried to do differently?
DEVONTE GREEN: No.
