*Official* B1G In-Season Thread

Izzo and Beilein have a bunch of 4 and 5 stars?

I'm pretty sure Langford is the only 5-star on either team, and his season ended 2 months ago.
Bridges, Harris, Jackson Jr, Dawson, Langford, etc. Way more talent than Purdue has had in the past 10 years.

I don't know why this is so hard for them to admit. I mean, I think Archie is a good coach. He's made it further in the tournament with a team (assuming more 3*s than Painter has had - guessing here - could be wrong) from Dayton. But I'm not here trying to say he's better than or on the same level as Izzo and Beilein because that would be stupid. Just like saying Painter is better than or on the same level as Izzo or Beilein is stupid.

It's very odd.

So you were lying then saying he's made the Sweet Sixteen with a bunch of 3*'s? Or are you just dumb?
Wasn't lying. Simply meant that making it to the Sweet 16 with a bunch of unheralded guys. Wasn't being literal.

Archie made it to the Elite Eight at Dayton. He didn't have a team loaded with 4 or 5* players. Should I consider him on the same level with Izzo and Beilein then?

Archie won one more game than Painter in the tournament. Do you think that puts him on Painter's level?

Given your logic, yes, considering he made it further with less talent. Realistically, it's too early to tell for Archie. This is only his second year at a major program, so we'll need to revisit this after a handful of years. However, it's not too early to tell that Painter isn't on the same level as Izzo or Beilein. That much is beyond clear.

But he can have a team of 4 and 5 stars. That’s literally half his fvcking job.
I wish it were as easy that. It'd been nice to have had Diamond Stone, but 100k was waiting outside his porch with a turtle logo on it.

This FBI shit is a clear window into what recruiting actually is in college basketball and Matt Painter isn't playing that game. Recruiting is a mine field.

Painter isn't the best recruiter. But I do think if he had a big name brand school behind him, he'd recruit better.

Lol what?

Izzo has a National Title, and 7 Final Fours. Hasn't missed the tournament in 2 decades.

Beiling has 2 Final Fours, and started coaching literally 20 years before Izzo took over for MSU.

And he had been in the league 15 years longer?

2 of their top 6? Don’t tell me you think Pemsl and Nunge are top 6.
they were tied for 5th in scoring, Pemsl was 3rd in rebounding with 144 and started 17 games as a FR
Nunge was 2nd in blocked shots with 25 and T-2nd in steals with 21, plus started 5 games as a FR.

so yeah that makes them top 5
Nunge as a FR weighed 225 lbs now he weighs 250 lbs he also adds another inside outside player with range to 3
Pemsl weighed 265 lbs and now weighs 235 lb and is much quicker after losing 30 lbs he adds that range to 17-18' that Cook lacks. he also adds that physicality that was lacking.

both add something that this years team was lacking on defense. they combined for 235 rebounds and 35 blocks and 35 steals.

Nunge is a better backup to Garza while Kriener could be a better backup at the 4 and he too as range to 3 as a inside outside player.

I never said Painter is on the same level as Izzo or Beilein. Just saying you undervalue him just because he hasn't won one more game in the tournament. That's fine. That's what you're judged on in CBB. I just don't think winning one more game and making it the Elite 8 makes one coach that much greater than the other.

There it is! The old every other school is dirty excuse. Swanigan and Barnes would likely disagree with your post. Lulz.

Laughing Sorry yore boosters are poors.

Michigan and MSU lose a lot of early entrants to the NBA. Does having to replace those players with other young players factor into your evaluation at all?

Purdue started 4 seniors last season. I can't think of a time Beilein has had more than 2 senior starters at Michigan. Manny Harris, Darius Morris, Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr., Nik Stauskas, Glenn Robinson III, Mitch McGary, D.J. Wilson, Moritz Wagner. That is a lot of early attrition. I wonder how Beilein's legacy would be different if half of those guys stayed until they graduated.

2015 Final Four, MSU was led by unranked Travis Trice. Branden Dawson was the only 5-star on the roster, and no one else was even a Top-75 recruit. Denzel Valentine was a low 4 star. Bryn Forbes was unranked 0-star. Matt Costello was a low 4-star. Gavin Schilling, Alvin Ellis, and Marvin Clark were all unranked / low 3-stars.

Yes Izzo is great at player development. Which makes the past couple MSU flameouts even more puzzling with the type of talent they've had in recent years.

Imagine if this MSU team had a senior Deyonta Davis and Miles Bridges...

We did. Doing it the right way. Gary Williams let primo talent leave the DMV because he didn’t like AAU circuit. Shit Juan Dixon had to beg Gary to come watch him play.
Congrats and 17 years later Turge can't even get a team with Melo Trimble, rented Diamond Stone, Jake Layman, & Robert Carter past the 2nd weekend.

Would you trade places with them? A National Championship and failed attempts at making it passed the Sweet Sixteen?
I guess? I'd have been 8 years old when Maryland won that Natty. I probably wouldn't even remember it or have any clue it happened until like 2010, but sure, I'll take it.

And he had been in the league 15 years longer?

And?

You said based on results. There is no one close to Izzo in the B1G when it comes to tournament results.

Even starting since Beilein was hired at UM in 2007, Izzo has 3 Final Fours. And 5 regular season B1G titles. And 3 BTT titles. And 2 B1G COYs.

Beilein is a phenomenal coach. But his results aren't better than Izzo's.

Because Izzo has been in the league longer!!!!

At this pace, if JB made it that long, which he won't, it would be real close, IMO.

What aren't you getting?

What does being in the B1G have to do with tournament results?

What don't YOU get? Beilein is older. He's been coaching longer. He has less hardware.

You finished 4 games behind us in the B1G. You’re terrible SOS non con wins don’t mean jack. 10-10 in the B1G. Average, mediocre, etc.
3 of those losses in the BT were to CoChampions Purdue and MSU. also 3 came to MD and Wisconsin, that make 6 of Iowa's 10 losses,

as for the OOC you ingnore the fact that Wisconsin played and beat Savanah State the week before they played Iowa. this was your murderers row of OOC

Coppin State
Grambling
Savanah State
Western Kentucky

these were the top games for Iowa
Oregon when they were ranked #13 with a pair of 5* players
UConn
ACC/BT Pitt
ISU top 20 by Ken porn
UNI part of the Big 4 instate tourney which came to a end. but there is a state legislator that has submitted a bill requiring both ISU and Iowa to play both UNI and Drake EVERY YEAR.
Iowa won the Y2 Classic championship and Garza was named the events MVP

Finishing .500 in the BT was better than 8 other BT teams did. considering 10 BT teams were picked to be in the NCAAT while Iowa was picked to finish 10th or worse in the BT.
