*Official* B1G In-Season Thread

Broootal refs that last game but had a good time nonetheless. Encouraged by what I saw this weekend. Gonna be a fun team to watch.

Like where this team is at offensively. Have so many guys that can shoot it. Gonna have to find answers defensively when Boudreaux is in or when Nojel can’t play big minutes. Dnot think we have the highest ceiling but far more advanced than I thought we’d be.

Yup. 0 points and just 2 boards. HUGE game.

Feel a lot better about this team tonight than I did a week ago. Some guys (Cline, Boudreaux, Wheeler, Eastern) have done a good job stepping into new roles offensively. Gonna struggle with athleticism and pressure defense on the perimeter all year.

Carsen still building trust in some of those guys when things go a little sideways. Six turnovers tonight was about three too many. But even on a "bad" night he turns in 26 and 7.

"Painter can't win games with a title on the line"
"He's won two in the past three years in similar title games."
"So what?"

C'mon. Take your L like the gentleman you are.

Okay, okay, but you know my point and know its true.

No. Iowa's zone will get exposed in the Big 10. And against better teams. Oregon and Uconn aren't that good. Oregon cannot shoot. There were plenty of holes in Iowa's zone. A ton. Just wasn't exploited. Teams like Michigan, MSU, Purdue and IU will destroy that defense. Iowa's defense isn't that much better. They basically camo it by slowing the pace down..Laughing

13 goddamn turnovers in the first half. We should have a 20+ point lead, but are playing way to sloppy.

I don't think either B1G that lost today should be concerned about these losses. In the grand scheme of things they won't matter much and they are good tests.
Agree. Personally my thoughts on IU didn't change. If anything, maybe a little stronger. Tough atmsophere. Down a few a players. Two starters in early foul trouble. Yet we hung in there. Fell behind by 10. Battled back. Had a great chance to win.

Nothing has changed. Still feel this is going to be a really good basketball team.

Impressed with Purdue TBH. Cline has improved a ton on getting to the rim. Edwards is really good.

Tough loss but liked the way they played. Some pretty awful officiating didn’t help either.

If Illinois has one thing, it's personality. Our freshman big Giorgi Bezhanishvili has a thing for the spotlight:

Carsen obviously a boss on offense, but he wasn't very good on defense last night. Similar for Cline. The opposing guards were getting to the hoop at will the last 5-10 minutes of the game.

Expending too much energy on offense?

I think Carsen was a little gassed, and Cline was a little over-matched. Didn't help that Haarms chose to have arguably his worst game in a Purdue uniform, and that Nojel got in foul trouble. That foul trouble took our best defender (and one of the league's best) out of the game, and just as importantly made it really difficult to take Carsen off the floor to get him a much needed breather.

I know that VT can shoot, but Painter has a tendency of not making any adjustments on PNR defense. Either go under or have Boudreaux hedge aggressively, as opposed to letting our guys that were struggling continue to get beat playing it the same way.

To me there were two takeaways from the game:
a) we are susceptible against teams like VT due to some athletic limitations -- and the fact that they can shoot so well that you can't sag on top of the fact that they can attack the bucket really helped expose that.
b) although our offense is already operating at a pretty high level, Carsen needs to trust teammates and settle down when we face some adversity.

Say what you will, but we also had some brutal calls go VT's way.

Defense was a complete abomination in the second half. Haarms was awful. Carsen tried to do too much at times but I can't really blame the guy. Refs sucked, missed two critical calls that cost us 5 points. We are going to lose several games here in the next couple weeks. Schedule is brutal.
