Been too busy to catch a game?
Watched some of their game against Buffalo. Just not going to change preseason predictions based on 2 games. (I never made any predictions, but saying it would be silly for others to change them) UM looks the part but so do other teams so far, Purdue included.

I don’t think it’s silly for rankings to be fluid. There were reports this summer that Diabate wasn’t ready. If that looked like the case that would be a big hit to Michigan’s rotation. Instead he absolutely looks college ready.

We were all expecting Johns and Jones to be better than they've been too, so I'm not sure what your point is. The teams that we all expected to look good have looked good. Nothing's changed for me.

I don’t think those two really have big question marks though. The questions about Michigan centered around their youth.

Diabate has looked better at this point than I thought he would. The rest is about what I expected. Johns has looked no better than he's ever been. Jones looks like a role player - no idea where the talk about the NBA came from. That's not a reality.

Correct. But as long as the freshmen came in as advertised we didn’t need Jones or Johns to be more than role players.

Purdue and Illinois both have better backcourts, equal or better 5 positions, and guys that will be able to hold their own against Houstan/Johns. I'm just not sure why you think anything has changed.

And there were questions about whether Edey really had passed Trevion or it was incorrect. So far, it's not incorrect. Granted we haven't played anyone (nor have many teams), but Edey is averaging 19 and 10 and shooting 86% from the floor and 83% from the line.

There were questions about whether Ivey would become a more efficient shooter. His eFG% is 65% after being just 45% last year.

There were questions about whether Purdue's 3P shooters could bounce back after a subpar season. Purdue is 28th nationally and at 43%.

All were questions. None have really been answered because we haven't played anyone of note. Same as what can be said about most teams.

It’s probably best we let everyone play real competition before making conclusions. This time next week will give us a better idea.
This is exactly what I was thinking reading all this. Too early for these judgements.

I don’t care if we were playing against air, it’s easy to see that Diabate is better than Austin Davis 😂

You guys are acting like I’m saying Diabate is Jesus. We all watch enough college basketball to know if a player looks ready or not. Diabate looks the part. I don’t need 12 games to determine Diabate is better than Austin Davis was.

Were detractors of Michigan saying he was going to be Austin Davis? I think everyone was on the same page he was going to be better than him. I’m fairly certain anyone picking Purdue or Illinois over Michigan was due to the perceived strength of purdue/Illinois, not that Michigan will be weaker than expected.

Hot take, I know

Former Illini Mark Smith has forever ruined me in the "looks the part" department as a freshman. He was good enough to dominate terrible teams and was very "blah" against decent/good teams. He has ended up being a very average player and is currently at KSU.

Remember

Our own beat writers were questioning if Diabate was “college ready” enough to be in the rotation or if he was too raw, so yes I’d imagine there was concern about if Diabate could contribute even as much as Austin Davis did.

That has nothing to do with @Chicubsfan24 said.

Huh?

“Were detractors of Michigan saying he was going to be Austin Davis?”

Yes, I’d imagine if our beat writers had concerns about Diabate being useful in the rotation then detractors probably also had concerns about Diabate being useful in the rotation.

Who on this board have been detractors of Michigan?

What does Michigan insiders have to do with this whole conversation?

What have Purdue/Illinois “not done” in order to fall behind Michigan just because a 5 star freshman has looked the part against 2 subpar teams as a role player?

just not sure what you’re trying to argue here. It’s been 2 games and everyone has looked the part. Not sure why anyone would change their preseason predictions based on nothing.

I never called anyone said anyone here was a detractor. What are you talking about?

You guys sure make mountains out of molehills.

People that were hesitant on Michigan were because of the big question mark on youth. IMO, Houstan and Diabate both showed they are college ready. Based on what I see I’d say it’s about a net wash between Franz Wagner + Austin Davis and Caleb Houstan + Mousa Diabate.

All I asked was if people who took the more experienced team would reconsider because youth question marks doesn’t seem to be a concern with those two.

It’s a pretty benign topic.

I wonder if the people who picked Purdue to win the conference would adjust it now that we see Houstan and Diabate are legit
You posed this question above.

We all said it’s too early to change predictions based on 2 games against subpar competition & no one really doubted Houstan & Diabate would be contributors. & if someone had Purdue above Michigan to start the year, Purdue has done nothing themselves to change that prediction either.

You then went on to say Michigan insiders even doubted Diabate but that you’re not making him out to be Jesus though.

just not sure where your original argument is coming from.

I’m not just talking here. There have been writers (and yes, posters here too) all summer commenting on Michigan’s youth being a question mark and dropping them a few spots because of it. That doesn’t mean I’m calling them detractors. Do I need to cite them? What a weird angle you’re taking this.

No, we are acting like we are saying it's way early to be changing preseason prognostications.

If it's Michigan's own beat writers questioning things, it sounds like you should have made the original post on your Homo Board.

Neither of you have Bruce, so you're all ****ed. 2nd round exits for everyone. ;)

I don’t think it’s too early to be buying into Houstan and Diabate. Like I said I’d probably put the combo about even with Franz Wagner + Austin Davis right now. Can we atleast agree on that?

This coming Saturday is gonna be a good one. Going to the Purdue game @ Wrigley against Northwestern (really looking forward to hearing that cat noise every couple plays) and then have Purdue-UNC. I plan on consuming many beverages in addition to an Au Cheval burger.

I think right now we largely know what Purdue's best offensive lineup is (at least in the back court, Gillis could overtake Furst). While that lineup is disciplined defensively, I'm interested to see how they hold up physically this weekend against some very talented opponents.

No idea because I haven't seen them play against anyone good. Guys show their worth against at large tourney quality teams IMO.

I agree with you there, but it’s still too early to know how each team stacks up as a whole. For example, it’s too early to know how Jones compares to Smith or Houstan to Livers/Wagner. Things look promising so far, but still early.

Same for most of the other top teams as well.

I get your point but Buffalo is a solid team and has a decent chance of making the tournament. Three Man Wave predicted them to win the MAC.

Regardless I think people that watch 100+ college basketball games a year like we do can identify when a freshman looks capable and when he doesn’t.

I think the key matchups will be IT/RJ Davis and Sasha/Black.

AP Poll is out.

4 Michigan
6 Purdue
10 Illinois
19 OSU
20 Maryland

ARV MSU, IU, Rutgers, Iowa

I don't know their personnel well, but IT and Sasha were the ones I was referring to. They rarely make mistakes defensively in terms of rotations, being out of position, bad gambles, etc, but they're both susceptible to being beaten off the dribble.

RJ Davis play very similar to Carsen Edwards (obviously not as good). Black is basically the opposite of Sasha. Athletic driver.
