John Beilein gone to Cleveland

I think this is basically two fold.

1) He has continually moved up levels throughout his career and wants to try his hand at the highest level

2) His frustration with roster management/recruiting at the college level. He was said to be pretty despondent when DJ Wilson left early. This year he has two guys racing out the door to be 2nd round picks in Iggy and Poole. I’ve felt for a while that it may cause him to retire earlier than anticipated. Can’t say I saw the NBA move coming though

Recruiting seems like it would be physically and emotionally taxing. You have to put in hours, and hours, and hours just to have a recruit in your top 5. And then you're traveling all over the country during the season - and you're still recruiting at the same time, going to several games and practices of your top targets. Even though the NBA season is longer, I think it might be easier on the body and mind because you're not constantly trying to win players over - or trying to keep players from leaving school early or transferring. Sure, you can always send your assistants out on these trips. But you're not endearing any recruits without a visit from the head coach.

Better college coaches have failed with NBA teams that had better talent then what belien will inherit. Much better talent. Can't see him lasting long. Cavs are awful.

I bet K would struggle to land recruits if he there wasn't a pay-system involved. Can you imagine him going up to a recruit and saying something like:

"Hi, I'm Coach K and I've coached the likes of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry on the US National Team. I've helped guide Team USA to 3 Olympic Gold Medals and 2 World Championships. I've also won 5 National Championships and won more games than any coach in College Basketball history. Would you be interested in joining our program?"

Ridiculous, right? I mean, the guy is crazy if he think he can land top recruits simply based on his reputation and his success at the collegiate and international level.
And Zion's parents asking for money and living in a $900,000 house is just normal recruiting.

Ready for an new challenge sounds like. Plus he’s losing his key guys from this year.

He got to two natty games. Couldn’t get it done. Then got waxed by TT this year.

Amazing coach tho. He took that program to two natties with mostly 3 stars and the occasional 4 star guys. Trey Burke was a 3.

Was hands down top 10 coach this decade.

They've had a lot of 4 stars over the years. And the occasional 5.

Disagree. They didn’t recruit much better than a ISU, K-State or Okie State by our league’s standards.

Take a look. Most of each class were 3’s. Couple 5’s and maybe 1 or 2 4’s a year.

Porzingis was a 5 and had one back in 2014. That was really it. Yes several 4’s. Still amazing what he did.

That’s what made him such a great coach.

IMO being a pro basketball, baseball, or hockey coach is more about balancing egos and babysitting than it is about coming up with a great game plan or system. Football the tactics are more important so the coach matters a lot in pro football. Obviously he wants to give it a go, and more power to him, but I don’t think he will find it enjoyable, I think he will be back in college in 2 years possibly at a lower level where recruiting isn’t as dirty.

Nailed it

The curse of the loss to Texas Tech continues. That’s 3 coaches Tech beat in the tournament this year that have moved on. Just waiting on Mark Few to bail.

As a Purdue grad and fan, I hate to see this. I respect JB and even though he made UM a yearly challenger for the B1G Crown I'd rather the Boilers face a quality coach like him than a douche like Izzo.

Now, please go hire Tom Crean, I miss him so much.
Spoken like a true butt hurt Boiler fan. I think Purdue fans hate Izzo more than UM fans.

I didn't realize they won two Championships under Beilein.
