Infraction: Fans of a blueblood program rushing after beating an overrated Fighting Illini team.
As an IU basketball fan, this is one of those moments that all the bourbon in the world can't wash away.
In the midst of an institutional trough, the embattled supporters of Indiana basketball let temporary excitement get the best of them and rushed the court after defeating No. 20 Illinois in Bloomington in 2011.
It was a rare cathartic moment for a people who had suffered long in the post-Kelvin Sampson era, but rushing the court after beating a Bruce Weber-coached team is something these eyes can't ever un-see.
- Fans of a team with five national championships in the rafters rushing the court after beating an unranked Minnesota team.
I went through the Dark Ages of Indiana basketball.
For some reason, the universe declared that my college experience at Indiana would take place during the worst four-year span in the basketball program's history, and I know too well how low things were in the post-Sampson era.
That being said, I'll never be able to justify the tepid court rush that took place after the Hoosiers beat unranked Minnesota in 2010. The Golden Gophers weren't even a top-five Big Ten team.
As I've written before, it was so inconsequential a win that I can't even find video of the rush.
Context is important---Its like saying, "dude was speeding, going almost 75MPH---yet forgetting to tell us the speed limit was 70.
Feel like I should copy and paste....IU was coming off two of the worst, if not THE worst seasons in their history; 6-25 and 10-22. IU was 1-3, 7-9 entering the game with Minny...The Golphers ended up in the NCAAT, and finsihsed 6th in the B10; at the time of the game, they were 3-1. Hard fought win in OT vs a good team----IU has lost 4 straight games, wheels were coming off---So lot of "emotion". What this guy should NOTE----is IU didn't rush the floor when they beat Michigan to open the B10 conference. It snapped an 11 game conference losing streak. Or that in 2009 when IU beat Iowa for thier only cofnerence win---no rush.
Illinois is a huge rivalry game. Yeah some, many IU fans may disagree---but this game is "hot".---AGAIN, IU in the midst of disaster. Had lost 8 of 9 entering thisw game. Was 1-6 in the B10...So knocking them off was a big deal to those kids.
See this is what fans of UNC, UK, Duke, KU, UCLA do not get. None of those programs have ever suffered through what this program went through in Creans first 3 years----6-25, 10-22 and 12-20. IU went 8-56 in the Big 10 those first three year..
EIGHT and FIFTY-SIX. And got shellacked more often than not.
So to say your fans wouldn't rush the floor under any circumstance---Naaah....You cannot say that.
Go 28-67, 8-56 over a three year span, and then talk to me.
