Hurt To Duke

I was answering this post.

This narrative is being pushed by people who don't know anything about college basketball.

Before the season: "it takes more than just having five star freshmen to win a championship. There are a lot of concerns with this team, depth and shooting being two of them."

After the season: "They had 3 first rounders and didn't even make it to the FF.
What did Duke have 4 ?

2 titles is nice. But for a blueblood school in a 36 year span, including 12 future NBA All-Stars... you might expect a little more.

He built the program into a blueblood in the first place.

Hurt is a classic stretch 4 who will score a lot. Kind of funny that he would have been perfect next to Zion for Duke this year. But he will be a great fit next to Carey as well. Next year gonna be real interesting. No real front runner again.

So, if we land Cassius Stanley on Monday, which the odds are in our favor, the starting 5 might be:

Tre Jones, So
Cassius Stanley, Fr (Stanley starting is by no means a lock)
Wendell Moore, Fr
Matthew Hurt, Fr
Vernon Carey, Fr

Key Bench:
Boogie Ellis, Fr
Jack White, Sr
Javin DeLaurier, Sr
Marques Bolden, Sr

Rest of Bench:
Alex O'Connell, Jr
Joey Baker, So
Jordan Goldwire, Jr

A little crowded there, especially with the wings. Wouldn't be terribly surprised to see one guy leave early.

Yeah, inaccurate shooters get a lot of PT in the nba.

See Tyus Jones. And he is better shooter than Tre.
He started off the year very good but ended on a downward spiral. I would take him any day as a point guard.

Still only two N.C. You can say K built Duke into one as well. Through 3 different era’s.

You’re not talking about Coach K.

But since you brought that up..

Dean Smith turned UNC into blueblood. Dean Smith also gave UNC Roy Williams. Roy Williams has won 3 titles and outperformed coach K since arriving in Chapel Hill.

Like a few other coaches, Dean Smith is a legend. That’s kind of a fact.

No, had this been UNC you’d be saying the same thing. Bottom line is the last 2 years have been below par with the talent you had. Vegas had Duke a heavy heavy favorite to win the title despite the concerns you listed. All that talent and no final 4, that’s under achieving.

I would not be saying the same thing. Because I respect how hard it is for teams to win a championship. Not making it to the Final Four may have been an underachievement, but it doesn't mean that they choked. They lost to a team that was able to exploit their weaknesses and hit a big shot in the final minute. Last year they lost to a 1 seed as a 2 seed. And somehow to you, that is choking.

How many years does the team that these "experts" pick to be the favorite actually win? If you use Vegas as a reference point for success, that's on you.

Stop being rational.

Yes, it's choking and under achieving IMO. Like I said before all that talent the last 2 years and nothing to show for it except celebrating another recruiting title. UNC has choked/under achieved several times with stacked teams in the past and I'm not afraid to say it.

No team built around 4-5 freshmen has won a championship. They haven't even played in a championship game. So a group of freshmen didn't do what anyone else has done before and that means they choked. Antawn Jamison leaving without a championship is choking. JJ Redick losing to LSU is choking. But just because the media does media things by over hyping them, doesn't mean they choked. They just didn't have enough horses.

So are you upset that you'll probably again be starting 4 freshmen?

Good get, I wished UK landed him. We're hurting in the front court right now. Even with Montgomery coming back.

They had plenty of horses. They had 5 star players sitting on their bench. They took the redshirt off Joey Baker and hardly even played him.

Definitely a National Championship team.
