Corruption

So... speaking of Trump...

Bob Woodward, a famous journalist who has won two Pulitzer prizes, whose investigative reporting was the key to Watergate, and who was called by the conservative publication The Weekly Standard "the best pure reporter of his generation, perhaps ever" is releasing a book about Trump and the Trump White House.

It describes aides stealing important letters and memos from Trump's desk before he could sign them, and people ignoring his military orders to kill heads of state of other countries. Chief of staff John Kelly describes Trump as an "idiot" and "unhinged," Woodward reports. Defense Secretary James Mattis describes Trump as having the understanding of "a fifth or sixth grader." And Trump's former personal lawyer John Dowd describes the President as "a ****ing liar," telling Trump he would end up in an "orange jump suit" if he testified to special counsel Robert Mueller.

"He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything. He's gone off the rails. We're in crazytown," Kelly is quoted as saying at a staff meeting in his office. "I don't even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I've ever had."

It also gives background for the Tillerson "The guy is a moron" comment... they had a huge meeting with the military about the Koreas... But the meeting didn't go as planned. Trump went off on his generals. "You should be killing guys. You don't need a strategy to kill people," Trump said of Afghanistan.

He questioned the wisdom of keeping US troops in South Korea.

"So Mr. President," former economic advisor Gary Cohn said to Trump, "what would you need in the region to sleep well at night?"

"I wouldn't need a ****ing thing," the President said. "And I'd sleep like a baby."

After Trump left the Tank, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared: "He's a ****ing moron."

The book opens with a dramatic scene. Former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn saw a draft letter he considered dangerous to national security on the Oval Office desk.

The letter would have withdrawn the US from a critical trade agreement with South Korea. Trump's aides feared the fallout could jeopardize a top-secret national security program: the ability to detect a North Korean missile launch within just seven seconds.

Woodward reports Cohn was "appalled" that Trump might sign the letter. "I stole it off his desk," Cohn told an associate. "I wouldn't let him see it. He's never going to see that document. Got to protect the country."

If Trump is re-elected, it’s time to abandon democracy.

I am more certain that he will not make it to the next election than less certain. That just changed a few weeks ago, for me.

You read the stuff I posted, Bk?

I feel like thats a punishable crime...swiping letters from the desk of the POTUS? Not sure Id admit to that one.

Yep. Sad. But also I don’t think ardent Trump supporters will care.

Basically, unless something incredibly awful happens to the country, the Trump base isn’t changing because they are convinced it’s all bureaucratic clutter that makes no difference to their lives.

I would assume it is not allowed... but to make sure that we are not vulnerable to North Korean nuclear weapons? Whether or not it is a crime, it is certainly a bit scary. I think you are maybe missing larger point?

I do think it interesting that it seems the military guys (Mattis, Kelly) seem to be the most angry. Not terribly surprising, I suppose?

I think this is very true.

It does make me look at Paul Ryan's quote about the Trump White House again... when he was asked about his imminent retirement and how he handled Trump...

“I can look myself in the mirror at the end of the day and say I avoided thattragedy, I avoided that tragedy, I avoided that tragedy."

Look---i know Trump is a moron and if what they said is true....good looking out!!! I was just saying it would take a set of plums to swipe something from his desk and then tell people about it. I almost always side with the Military personnel at that level and I don't see any reason why Id change that now. I took their word of BO's and I'd take it over DT's. I can easily see how they don't care for the Donald.

Midterms are the midterm elections in November. Elections for congress; the entire house, and a third of the Senate. Almost all of the governorships. Some people think that this is one of the most important midterm elections in history. If the Democrats gain control of the Senate at least, there is a lot of speculation that the push to impeach Trump will follow. It would also possibly give an indication of what the 2020 presidential elections might look like, in terms of a “blue wave” in response to Trump or not.

Almost impossible for Dems to win control of the Senate as they are defending 16/24 seats (roughly) and many in red states; 2018 was always going to be a hard year for Dems re: the Senate. It will be pretty amazing if they don't lose ground. But Dems are probably favored for the House, which actually impeaches, because all seats are up for election. The trial takes place in the Senate, which will almost certainly be R controlled.

I just like how he posts all those tweets from people like conservatives are going to give a shit. Shouldn’t it be abundantly clear by now, considering most have expressed this directly, that conservatives are more worried about policies than some of these issues that liberals constantly post?

Many of those are conservatives. And the rule of law is a pillar of democracy. This isn't sleeping with a porn star and paying her off stuff, this stuff actually matters. See:

I happened to see some Qanon stuff, where they insist this is all a scheme...

Qanon crazies thinking there are 40,000 sealed indictments to roll up a worldwide pedo/satanic sacrifice scheme (the "Cabal"), parade enemies through the streets, try civilians in military tribunals in Gitmo, and generally pervert the rule of law to lock her up or whatever.

Trump's already abandoned democracy. He wants to be king. The constitution means nothing to him. Power has him drunker than he was.

Dang if we don't need a reset button... One that would end the corruption in Washington and replace with honorable people.

It’s gettingg dangerously close to the point honestly. Though I have doubts many Americans will give us their nice lives to address the problem before outright crisis. I don’t see how it changes unless the “silent majority” stops being silent.

I've said it before. This country needs a designated survivor type event if we want to get out of our partisan rut.
Calipari for President.

Edit:plan b Matt Jones for president.

Doesn't have the same ring.

Edit:twice what the ruckus is that? Mods are after me.:D

I'd hate to be miserable.

Laying down now,

All of that reminds me of this scene from our cartoon president.

I hope Woodward plays clips of our President's praising him after he starts flipping out over the book.
Everyone quoted in that book is denying the claims. More FAKE NEWS! Big shocker.

The more interesting thing today was watching the Dems scrape and claw at any attempt to stop Kavanaugh from getting confirmed. Bunch of sore losers and it was hilarious to watch.

It would be in their best interests to deny the claims. But who knows what is real or fake news anymore?

How did you feel about Sen McConnell's refusal to consider President Obama's nomination?

Agreed, but going on the MSM’s accuracy of stories about Trump, I’m comfortable believing it’s fake.

Thought it made sense. I liked that he was just following prior precedent set by Dems.
No, he wasn't. It was discussed whether that would be a strategy if a SCOTUS opening happened leading up to the '92 election. No such opening occurred, and the discussion never got much traction until it was time for the GOP to point fingers and equivocate 24 years later.

Refusing to even consider a nominee 11 months out is unprecedented and disgraceful. You again use the end to justify the means.

That was the most embarrassing betrayal of America and American values that I’ve ever seen.

Some reactions to Woodwards book.

Trump, to Woodward: “I think you’ve always been fair."

Both Mattis and Kelly have denied what was reported in the book. Strangely, some of the same quotes had shown up some time ago attributed to Kelly, and he released the same response, largely verbatim.

When Woodward's book,
Fear: Trump in the White House by Bob Woodward,
The storm will really hit the Whitehouse. Its release date is next Tuesday.

I'm sure that he has plenty of tapes, documentation etc. to back up his claims.

Can you imagine the awkwardness that will be in the white house when some of the people quoted, have to actually see Trump.

The firings, the resignations will be plentiful. MAGA

Again. Each of the people being quoted in the book have reasons to deny the validity of the claims made against them, or the quotes associated with them. But here is something from Mattis.

Of course there's going to be denials. It's expected. Let's wait and see if the sources are on tape or when more heat is applied by the book.

Woodward's too smart just to make stuff up.

My theory is that Mattis is the source of the information in Woodward's book.
