If every loss to a 16 seed was guaranteed to be followed up by an NCAAT championship, I would sign up for a 16 seed loss every other year. Upsetting losses aren't a problem when you're hanging banners. This is the easiest question ever.
Duke has won a championship since, but we still hear about Lehigh and Mercer. I will take a Lehigh and Mercer all over again for another championship.

Going to the NIT any year is a complete embarrassment for any top program.
Guy tripped over Diakite in OT and got 2 free throws.

They did for sure, those stand out as momentum changers in OT but Texas Tech deserved to lose for letting Culver jack up a bad 3 point shot with the game tied and 5 seconds still left on the clock.
Of the Final Four teams, 3 ranked 230th or worse in pace of play. The two finalist----TT and UVA? Red Raiders were 268th---. UVA dead last. Only four of the SW 16 teams were in the Top 100(Duke, UNC, LSU and Gonzaga).
It ain't just the Big 10. I mean shit, IU's pace of play was better than Auburn and UK's. Go even deeper? Only about 15 teams from P5 conference's were in the Top 200. Its just how the game has became.
Watched the title game with a UVA grad and realized that they have no problem with playing the the slowest basketball since 1929. The style is basically 40 minutes of trolling the other team through slow torture. I could enjoy that.

If the refs had called the foul Auburn would have won. Auburn got shafted twice.
If I could exchange 8 Final Four Losses we've had for 1 Championship I would even if it meant losing to a 16 seed the year before.

You’re right, though. Good, defensive teams generally rule by reducing possessions, and you’ll usually only find good defensive teams in P5 schools that can recruit long, skilled athletes.

Everything else being equal, up-tempo is more exciting, but quality play is quality play. What's that D3 team who was averaging like 140 ppg for a while? Granier? G-something? They were also horribly inefficient, giving up over 100 ppg, and playing .600 basketball at best.
UVa is really good and consistently so under Bennett. I don't find them boring at all.

Adjusted tempo is misleading in reference to how fast a team actually plays offensively. This is the formula used: FGA+TO+(.475xFTA)-Orebounds
That doesn’t tell me anything about what a team is doing defensively. The best defensive teams in the nation roughly force 14-16TOPG. That’s a lot, but we’re still looking at 50+ poss where the opponent is chewing clock looking for a shot against good D. Aside from that, the factoring of FTA is an assumed variable. How many of those FTs came from and-1 situations? How many are from the 7,8,9 fouls 1-and-1’s? How many are 2-shot shooting fouls? (Which makes x .475 off balance from the correct x .500 attempts)
TxTech for example really doesn’t have a slow paced offense, at least I don’t personally think they do. But their defense is so good and draw a ton of charges which are non-transition opportunities. Auburn is 155th in tempo and that’s about middle of the pack, you can’t convince me that they play a slow methodical offense because they don’t. UNC being 7th is bizarre, nobody plays faster than them. I don’t think it’s possible. Virginia, Wisconsin, a few others rightfully so are low in tempo..... But that metric is pretty farfetched in a good amount of cases.
Side Note: Indiana’s adjTempo is about 70 schools slower than Auburn. There’s also substantially more than 20 P5 schools in the top 200. But there is way more Mid-Majors for sure, a lot of them are really shitty teams... #1 in tempo is FL Intl, they’re garbage and 3/4th of CUSA is >.500 which means there’s probably a million turnovers and FTs every game, all boosting “tempo.”
And question, is it more humiliating to lose to a 16th seed in NCAA tournament or going 0-30 in the season?
Only if I played on this years team and wasn't a senior last year.
