Who are the top 5 programs in order?

Uh huh, sure. Like I said, everyone, even some of your own, agree we are number one all time, except some of you homers. I don’t get it either, second place is awesome in this sport.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion. I just think that when you look at the entire body of work, you have to take the good & bad. Fact is, UK has MULTIPLE NCAA violations that have led to probation. Which two of those being major violations. Those have to count against them.
UNC has exactly 1 probation for 1 year.

We'll just pretend a decades long academic cheating scandal never happened just because UNC got away with it.

1) Kentucky
2) North Carolina
3) Kansas
3) Duke
5) UCLA
6) Indiana

That’s all time.

In my lifetime (1979-present) I’d rank them

1) Duke
2) North Carolina
3) Kentucky
4) Kansas
5) Uconn

Louisville has an argument to be included in my lifetime top 5
Wouldn’t Carolina be better than Duke since 1979? We each have 5 titles. Jussayin.

And what I’m saying, is F Duke.

Last year when UK went to UCLA they said that was the first sell out in years.

So as far as programs go UCLA is not in the top five. Here again I will go off the rails and state that the third or fourth historical best program has to be Indiana. They are better than Duke based on following and history.
Which program in the top five is not a large state school? Still pretty amazing that Duke can hang up numbers like that without state funding and an undergrad enrollment a quarter of those others listed.

All time?

Kentucky
North Carolina
Kansas
Duke
UCLA
Indiana

I won't argue if you think Kansas and Duke should be switched. I think KU's overall history trumps Duke's, even if they have 2 less titles.
Note that the Indiana fans have been beaten down to the point they simply have given up on the argument that Indiana is a blue blood.

My take on "programs" is that Indiana is top three or four historically. They hit the ground hard after Bob Knight and have now quit righted the ship; however, they sell out at home folks come to see them play on the road.

It's very KU fan of me but I don't think how many titles should be the main or only factor.

KU is #1 in conference titles
KU is #2 in all time wins
15 final fours
Has 3 hall of fame coaches.
Has the longest NCAA tournament streak.
Has at least 2 final fours in 4 or 5 straight decades.
Duke has 16 Final 4s and has been to a Final 4 in 6 straight decades.

Just curious, why does it matter if one coach is mostly responsible for your program’s success or if multiple coaches played a role? Seems sort of irrelevant to me.

Duke will likely never have the success in the early Coach K years in the 1980s and 1990s but I don’t see us falling off too much from what we’ve currently been doing post K: top 3 in ACC mostly and a Final 4 Run every 4-5 years.

I think KU and Duke are 3 and 4 would be where the discussion is at.

This is both subjective and objective!!!

Kentucky has the most wins and UCLA has the most titles...However, Kentucky owns most NCAA Records...Thus...UK should be #1!!!

Kansas and North Carolina are 2-3 in wins...Have similar NCAA Records...Yet UNC has double the titles, so you could put either second...I give UNC the nod because of NCAA Titles!!!

Now you compare Duke and Kansas...As with Kansas and UNC, either or would be a good choice for third place...I'd choose KU because it's the place both UK and UNC get their history from!!!

Duke gets the next spot from me, regardless of UCLA's Brief NCAA Success!!!

Next I'd have to choose between Indiana (Better fans and longer tradition), and UCLA (Better overall NCAA Records), so it's a personal choice...So I choose Indiana!!!

IMHO, UCLA is no lower than #6 in any poll!!!

After those six their are several schools that could lead the next tier...Arizona, Connecticut, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, St Johns, Temple...I'd go with Louisville even though Connecticut has more NCAA Titles...Louisville has had a longer more consistent run as a program than the Huskies have!!!

After that it again comes down to ones personal choice based on several factors...Overall wins, Tourney Appearances, Tourney Wins and Titles, Fans, Overall History etc...

Look at schools like Illinois, Notre Dame, St Johns, Temple, Texas, Utah...All top 20 in wins and damn near ZERO when it comes to NCAA Tourney Success...Where do you put them with Arizona, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Ohio State and even Villanova and Western Kentucky!?!?!?

The pecking order is up to each individual after the first six, and I'm not so sure Indiana is safe in the top six...I could see several schools replacing them due to the drought they'be been in since 1987!!!

That's my two cents (Sense)!!!

If Archie can actually turn IU into a contender again you'll see all kinds of IU fans crawling out of the woodwork and showing up on this board.

To be fair, its not like you pull basketball players from your general student population. Not sure how relevant student body size is in basketball.

Being a private university can bring up a whole other list of advantages that the other schools don't have. Duke recruits nationally like everyone else so that doesn't matter.

The second largest endowment in the U.S. does not count?

Not having to account to the State for money spent is a lot better than the state universities.

How is North Carolina not #1 right NOW? Carolina had a better season than Kentucky this season and the Tar Heels have been to the previous two national title games and won one. Roy also has more national titles than anyone over the last 15-years.

1. UNC
2. Kentucky
3. Kansas
4. Duke
5. UCLA
Roy also had 0 the first 15 years or so at what you list as the #3 program of all time but nice arbitrary timeline.

Issue with me putting Duke at 3 is their dependency on one coach. They were still relevant before K, but not a top 5-10 program.

KU has went through 3 coaches since 1985 in the same time period which is more impressive given the fact that the brand has maintained so well. Even Kentucky and UNC has significant dips in coaching changes while KU maintained at the highest level.

When Coach K has to step down for a few games Duke crumbled last year. When he retires, I just don’t see them hanging up there like they have been. They could be Indiana

It's funny how no more than 20 years ago Indiana was a strong 3 on this list and has now dropped to 6. The title drought has hurt us, but these things are cyclical and IU will surge at some point. They have everything you'd want to be a power program again.

You're a dumb little bitch and those are the only words that matter. Duke's relevance began with K and will end with him. You will slip right back into the joke that you were before he arrived. Kansas has done more and means more to the sport of basketball than the whiners in Durham ever will. You ever even the best program in your own damn state! And basketball was perfected by Kansas.
Some may not realize this but Duke appeared in four Final Fours in the 17 years prior to Coach K's arrival, including just two years prior. They didn't break thru with a title but they were far from irrelevant.

And now I need to go take a shower for defending Duke.

We're here. We understand too. The title drought really hurts. But historically, IU belongs in the discussion. Duke has literally just caught us on titles, and we've had a 30 year drought. 30 years lmao. We've had two coaches win multiple titles and a 3rd lose in the the title game. The big ten has also historically been one of the two toughest, deepest, hardest and most prestigious conference titles. These lists are cyclical when looked at over many years. Any program is 2 bad hires in a row from going a decade or two down to national irrelevance.

IU will surge at some point. The state is still passionate and hungry and a hotbed for recruiting.

I"d probably put Duke above KU right now, however if KU wins this year, then I would put KU above Duke.

They're close in wins and Duke has 5 titles to KU's three. If KU had 4, then with their wins, I don't see how they're not #3.
Ku is 104 wins ahead of Duke, and only 15 behind UK. KU's winning % is 3rd @ .725 with Duke 4th at .708
But if you account for the things off the court, KU clearly pushes itself ahead of Duke. Naismith it's first coach, Rupp, Dean Smith and Ralph Miller learned the game there from Phogg Allen.
Coach K has been on 1 hell of a run (7 final fours in 9 years from 86-92 is crazy), but in my very biased opinion, they sit at #4.

Oh no doubt, it will all come back together for IU at some point. Great resources and fan support will ensure that. I just can't believe it has been 30+ years already. I did not think it would take that long to get back on track.

Wonder where IU would be had they won the title in 2002? Lol. Didn't think it would be 30 years either. IU is by far the 'hungriest' fan base

Question for all
KU is essentially the 90's braves. The have lossed multiple title games and final fours under Allen, Owens and Roy. And we know about Bill and making FF's.
However KU have won more conference titles than anyone and no one is close. Is this an impressive accomplishment , should it be considered prestigious?

I was just trying to come up with something KU has done that’s more impressive but I got nothing.

But, every KU coach since 1939, the year the tournament began, has made it to the Final Four. That’s pretty impressive even if it’s only 6 guys.
