That ONE loss you will NEVER get over

altf.gif

Tournament wise, it's the 2011 Sweet 16 loss to VCU. We had that sucker won and then had a defender get lost on a freaking in bounds play to give up a wide open layup in OT with a second or two left. Brutal. We would have killed that Kansas team in the Elite 8 too.

Regular season it's the 2006 game at Duke. The double tech game. Not even a close second.

'92 Kansas v UTEP. Had my all time favorite jayhawk Rex Walters on it. Kansas was a #1 seed and NC contender. Just a shitty ass game.

I forgot the year, I think it was 2010. I know it was in Atlanta. ACC semis vs UNC. Refs have it to em as per usual.

We played you in 2007 and beat you by 9 so it wasn't that one. The next time we played you was in 2012 and won by 2 with a whopping four more FTs and 4 less fouls including having one of our best players foul out. State fans going to State.

2016 against Middle Tenn State. Or this year against Cuse. Or 2010 against Butler in the Final 4 (Draymond was fouled!).
The two more recent ones we deserved to lose. We played terribly. It’s just rustles my jimmies when you clearly deserve to win and you don’t. 2010 stung more for me

06 NCAAT Iowa was a 3 seed and lost on a last 2nd 3 to a 14 seed. still have not gotten over that loss. best chance in a long time to reach the Elite 8 if not the FF. 2 years later Alford left with 1 year left on his contract.

About 5 weeks ago against Nevada. Up 22 with 11 minutes to go and the entire bracket had collapsed. UC realistically could have made the title game.

There is nothing you could tell me to convince me that Cincinnati sports are not cursed...

'92 vs Duke in FF. IU's top 4 players (Cheaney, Bailey, Alan Henderson and Greg Graham) all fouled out and the 5th starter (Matt Nover aka Ricky Roe) finished with 4. It was ridiculous. The thing I remember most about it was how enthusiastic Teddy Valentine was every time he called a foul in the 2nd half. He made a complete spectacle of himself with every call. .

No knock on Duke because I think that '92 team was one of the best and compelling teams of my lifetime, but IU was playing better in that tournament and was better in that game until foul trouble changed the dynamic. It's the only game I've ever blamed on officiating. I think Valentine is a good ref too - but he had an axe to grind with Knight that game.

I also think around that time K and Knight were not on good terms, either.

Although there have been many for DePaul, the one that clearly stands out in my 38 years of fandom was the 1981 NCAA tournament first round loss to St. Josephs. Ranked #1 in the entire country, seeded #1 in the tournament and we lose 49-48 to St. Joseph's. It's the loss that started our fall from just outside Blue Blood status to where we are now, just outside DIII status.

Damn. NOW I understand.

Left Duke for DePaul. Ouch

Ha, I was always DePaul first. Growing up I had 4 teams I really loved...DePaul, Indiana, Duke and LSU. Soured on Duke after that 99 game. Soured on Indiana after Knight left. Was left with DePaul and LSU!

No big deal, I long ago accepted that my teams will never contend for a national title. I was lucky enough to be a diehard Bulls fan during my sports fandom prime in my mid teens through my mid 20s, during Jordan's career.

And recently as a diehard Blackhawks fan I got to experience a run of 3 Stanley Cups.

So I'm content.

No, they weren't. K was getting tired of being called Knight's "pupil" and said something about it that offended him. It wasn't disrespectful at all but Knight was very Trumpian with his petty loyalty obsessions.

Ahh '99 was when I first started following Duke that's why the loss still stings.

Yeah I remember watching something that discussed their little spat I think around the time K broke Knight's record. They're both alike in some ways but also have some differences as well.

K > Knight

Even IU fans have to agree.

I think Knight himself summed it up best... Before K was hired at Duke, he told Duke's AD "Mike coaches exactly like I do but he's not an asshole like me".

Oh well, you weren’t good enough anyway. Try living in the now because the past hasn’t been kind to you wuffie fans.
I'm enjoying the now. I thought this thread was about old games that we wish we had back? Just giving my two cents Tarhole.
