How about some love for the low-majors?

Here in Kansas City, former New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies and his KC Roos just won their sixth straight conference game at Oral Roberts, entering the Summit League tournament as the #2 seed. This team played a very tough non-conference schedule (at Baylor, at Kansas, at Colorado State) and it's starting to pay dividends in March. They have three players shooting >36% from beyond the arc and former Chattanooga Moc Khristion Courseault has been an excellent facilitator on offense.

Do NOT be surprised if you see these guys on the 16 seed in two weeks, which would be their first tournament appearance in program's 24-year D1 history.

^^^^^^^HONKEY BITCH ALERT^^^^^^^^

No one cares about those scab schools

congrats and thanks for letting us know. I look forward to you bumping this thread if they pull off the no longer impossible 16 seed over a 1 seed.

What’s next— sports teams that don’t play in the city they’re named after? What if the Dallas Cowboys played in Arlington, or the Giants played in NJ?

Went to a UMKC game about 20 years ago. You could pretty much sit wherever you wanted. Only player I remember is a guard named Michael Jackson who seemed to score all their points, including a game-winning buzzer beater.

You won’t be seeing that this year because they blew a three-point game in the final minute because they couldn’t hit free throws. Summit League final tonight on CBSSN between South Dakota State and Denver, who’s led by the nation’s leading scorer.

Back in the early 2000's, the local D2 and NAIA schools had a very competitive Summer League schedule in Kansas City. Games would be played in Overland Park and the Northland. Coaches weren't "allowed" to coach their teams, but it was well known that the coaches were observing and making recommendations in between games.

UMKC played in the league for two summers in a row, and consistently got their ass kicked by teams like MidAmerica Nazarene, William Jewell, and Rockhurst.

That program has come a LONG way. They used to be embarrassing.

Thanks for the history lesson. As someone who isn’t from KC but pulls for the local D1 team, it feels like they’re turning a corner. I believe there are plans for a new on-campus arena which could get them an invite to the MVC down the line. Good for them!
