Should Virginia move to #1 with a win over Duke?

It’s not a yes or no. I don’t think Michigan OR Virginia necessarily should be the unanimous #1. I think both would be a fair #1.
Your problem is like to embellish. No one said anything about anything about unanimous anything. The question was if Virginia beats Duke, should have move to #1 in the polls.

I’ve got @jhmossy, the biggest UVA fan on Rivals, liking my posts in a discussion about Michigan/Virginia and yet Della can’t grasp my point. Take a lap, @della.

@jhmossy liked stating that you would be ok with the Virginia move up to #1. What a shocker...

Just because I like a post doesn't mean I agree with it. It could just mean that I read it, thought it was a good post, or just want to improve your post to like ratio

I'm curious about the harder schedule comment here.

Gonzaga has played both TN and Duke and is 1-1. Both of those team are higher ranked than any team Mich state has played. KU is the highest ranked team MSU has played and they lost. The next highest team is in the 20s.

So Gonzaga has played a more top heavy schedule including Duke, TN, UNC, Creighton. Meanwhile MSU has played less of the top but more teams in the 20-50 range.

You continue to cite SOS in this argument. Which is a better display? Playing more top 15 teams and actually winning? Or beating more 20-50 ranked teams and elevating your SOS?

SOS isn't the end all metric and should only be part of the conversation. Personally, I think beating a top 5 Duke should end all arguments here and have Gonz ahead of MSU.

It's irrelevant to the thread but I do want to point out that it was a 5 point loss to #1 at-the-time Kansas in the first game of the year, and an OT loss at Louisville. MSU has over UCLA, Texas, Iowa, @Florida, @Ohio State, and Purdue. Unfortunately all of our key wins and two losses have come to teams that haven't lived up to their expectations or rankings at the time.

MSU will no doubt jump Gonzaga if they both continue to win, I was mostly originally just asking how many more wins that would take.

Is beating a depleted Duke (kenpom #2) team enough to say Virginia is undeniably better than Michigan who in this scenario would be beating kenpom #16 Wisconsin? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t think one “should” be higher than the other. I think it’s fair to still think Michigan would be better and I think it’s fair to think Virginia would better.
Virginia already beat Wisconsin. Just saying...

I can't get over MSU and Tenn being over KU. They beat both of those teams.
Which is my point entirely. "Strength of schedule" is inherently flawed because it isn't weighted properly. Teams get more SOS value for beating a #150 cupcake than a #250 cupcake when at the end of the day they are both cupcakes.

Della is the one grasping on firmly to the strength of schedule fallacy, so I'm asking her to be consistent. Kenpom ranks MSU's schedule significantly higher than Gonzaga's. If she is going to use SOS as to why undefeated Virginia > undefeated Michigan, then she should carry that logic to MSU vs Gonzaga.
Kenpom is trash.

It’s 2:40 am. I’m wide awake. And this discussion is about a damn poll in January.

I am down to watching Tulsa and UConn on ESPNU. Whoever wins this game should be #1. And there is a hangover in my future. Take a lap, all of you.

If they beat Va without Tre then they should be number 1.
I disagree, Duke would have two losses. Your team is what it is when you play the game, names have no bearing. I would put UM as #1 with UT a close #2. However, I think UT would beat UM head to head.

I hesitate to answer your post Della. You seem to change the post to wording that supports your position and then reply. Not very nice on your part.

I won't deny, I can be a little word tricksey. However, being #1 requires more than just a team that can knock another's lights out on a given night. They are also required to be consistent. Losing 2 games would not be demonstrating consistency this early in the season. IMO.

I'd have said Yes, if Duke were healthy.
I'd have voted No, but there's no poll..

Should both UM and UV meet up in the tourney, and both were healthy..
I'd prob take Virginia.

Chicks dig the long ball... but I see you Michigan....#69

Loved them and Smoltz.
My oldest's middle name is Maddux.

Insane those ATL teams only won one WS.
Being a Braves fan in the 90’s was like being on a roller coaster watching them be so good during the regular season then losing in the postseason. They could’ve/should’ve had several more World Series Titles.

Helped me (was in my pre- and early teens) later prepare for Kansas hoops.

Similar to Kansas.
Atlanta Braves
Oklahoma football
Buffalo Bills (not consistently but 0-4 in 4 consecutive SB's qualifies them for this list)
Kansas basketball

Fans of these teams have had it pretty rough in my years of watching sports. So close so many times only to come up short. I question myself for getting too emotionally attached every season only to have the inevitable happen. Like I've said before, it's harder to be a fan of a CBB team that wins 30+ games every season and loses in the Elite 8 than it is to be a fan of school who regularly wins around 20 games and misses the tournament often. Fans of those schools only know what it's like to be mediocre. They'll never understand what it's like to be thrown off of Cloud 9 into hell in only a matter of minutes.
