Purdue President Mitch Daniels nails NCAA

That was him that did that thread? Lol, then he just posted that? That’s awesome.

I mean, when you aren’t a fan of a team and can’t go long without talking about them and can’t post without whining about them it is kind of a thing.

I have noting against UNC. MOF, grew up loving them. Plus in my early years, UNC was our NCAA biatch.......81 and 84. Anyways..........

A loop hole. A loop hole that I am sure UNC was aware of, saved your butt. Not you being innocent. Why some of you cannot just come out and admit that is beyond me. UNC was lucky. But hey, it is what it is. I couldn't care less, really. I am sure if the NCAA looked hard enough, they could find many, MANY kids who were probably ineligible.

I do know this gets tiresome, though. It's over. Nothing is going to change. NCAA has ruled, and that is that. AS much as some of you hate it, UNC has 6 National titles. All their wins. Taint it if ya want. Whatever makes you sleep better. But fact is, they count, and always will.

100% agree with the Purdue author. As a Kentucky fan, yes, I hate the one and done farce of a system and am only at grips with it because overall it benefits us to win more games. But I admit I care less and less about basketball directly as a result of it and more about football and baseball.

I agree with everything in that article, as I have preached about it for several years. I wish more Presidents would weigh in on how pathetic, and inconsistant the NCAA has been. NCAA is a farce

Sure, all fine with me. But look at it from a Kentucky fan's perspective and it becomes a tad hypocritical to say "well everyone knows you cheated!" Considering we use the NCAA record books as a defense of Cal when people bring up the vacated final fours, that is exactly what the Carolina guys are doing. We can't have it both ways, but neither can they.

Jimbo that’s the point! All UNCheat fans did when we hired Cal (and still to this day) was yelled “Cal’s a cheater we don’t need facts or care what the NCAA says we know he done it” and “OJ was cleared to but we all know he done it”. Now that the NCAA cleared them (lol) they swear by the NCAA. It’s pretty comical!

It's amazing how everyone is always obsessed with UNC to you guys. The Purdue fans here rarely comment on UNC and yet they're magically obsessed with UNC because their President made a comment about the NCAA and didn't even name UNC. This paranoia actually says more about you losers than it does anyone, including your cheating ass school.

Isn’t that the funniest shit ever!Laughing That’s their “Go to” when they have nothing else to say because that’s the only thing they can say. Everyone is obsessed or jealous of UNC! If you’re a UK fan you also haven’t and can’t get over the Luther Maye shot!RollLaugh

Here I say it Kansas cheaters Louisville cheaters North Carolina cheaters Duke cheaters Arizona cheaters Michigan State cheaters last but not least I think this school is the biggest cheater of all of them this coach is the God of all cheaters Kentucky fans you earn that number one spot John Calipari

It’s coming. Growing up a UNC fan must of punked him out of his lunch money and look at him now, scarred for life.

I only knew one UNCheat fan growing up in school but he was a little puss that never went to class (imagine that) and dropped outta school!Eyeroll

No one believes you, man. Whatever someone did to you can't be undone. It is unfortunate but is what it is at this point.

well put

Mitch Daniels is acting like a cry baby
he is basically saying "everyone gets OAD's except us, i hate them so bad"

I mean, he is basically taking shots at all the big time programs for various reasons. Why? Not sure. It kind of reeks of insecurity though. I doubt the ADs or Presidents from bigger programs even pay attention tbh.

Well when I was 15 one of my buddies mom gave me a midnight tuggie when I was at his house for a sleep over do you think that would be it? That’s all I can come up with!

Good letter, in general, but he should be directing it towards the NBA. The whole scholarship thing threw me off though. Because a kid would leave early for the NBA that school should be penalized by however many years of eligibility he had left and can't fill his scholarship with someone else? That part is just absurd. First, he must not realize scholarships are given on a year-to-year basis, not 4 years guaranteed. There are plenty of other scenarios though. What if a kid transfers or gets kicked off the team just because the coaches can't handle him? Does that penalty not apply to them? That would be.....rich. He kind of sounds a lil jelly, imo. Doubt his outlook would be the same if Purdue was racking up a few Caleb Swanigans in every recruiting class. Also, it has always been my opinion that 2-and-done is the only possible solution. Either let them go out of high school or they are restricted from entering the draft for 2 years after that. The 3-year thing would never work for basketball. The ones that aren't quite good enough to go into the NBA right out of HS would just go overseas to play for money instead of waiting 3 years to get paid.

Doesn’t hurt me as a Duke fan in the slightest. We recruit the best players. They attend classes for the academic year they are on campus. Leave in academic good standing and chase their dream of playing in the NBA. Why would that bother me in the slightest? It doesn’t hurt. At all.
Haha, this is what most of us UK fans have been saying since 2009. Of course, nearly everyone just laughs at that response cause they jelly.

There's a lot of crying over his letter that is misdirected imo

I know the conspracy crowd won't believe this, but I don't tnink his point was to change the rules so that Purdue would be better, or that he feels that way because Purdue doesn't get 4 OAD's every year. IIRC he felt this way well before becoming the president, and his alma mater is Princeton, so it's not like he's viewing everything through a black and gold lens. Probably has much more to do with his experience as governor, when part of the job is sending a big check to stare schools, and his opinion on what schools prioritize as institutions.

And the UK guy above has a great point, some of his beef should be directed to the nba. They have less than zero incentive to change tho, so I would need to come from the NCAA side

I'm probably the only one that's read it, but the uchicago president penned a great article in SI a loooong time ago explaining why he chose to drop football (and they were a powerhouse back in the day with stagg coaching). It's amazingly relevant even today. Available for free in their archives iirc. Anyway, Mitch's letter came off much more like that than complaining because the current system means Purdue doesn't get lots of OAD's, but I suppose people see what they want to see

Nailed it 100%.

Daniels is a great representative of Purdue and has been a great President of the university, but I disagree with the premise of punishing programs - and by extension the players - who recruit one-and-done players.

If players are leaving the program in good academic standing and are pursuing professional opportunities, isn't that the whole point of post-secondary education? But the stakeholders at the NCAA and member schools need to drop the charade that these guys are just like every other student on campus. They aren't. And at some point, there needs to be a compensation model put in place. It won't fix all that ills the current amateur model, but it's a necessary step.

As a fan, I'd love to see Purdue competing for Final Fours and national titles more regularly, but I do genuinely like the fact that we get to see guys develop in a program for four years and build a connection with the fanbase. But was Caleb Swanigan somehow an inferior Purdue representative because he left after two years? Absolutely not, and it's a bit hypocritical of Purdue fans to decry OAD's just a year after having an early-entrant carry the team to the Sweet 16.

As for UNC and their fans, if the hill you want to die on is defending paper classes, then by all means keep fighting that good fight. Just know the vast majority of college sports fans are rolling their eyes at you.

I actually hate this idea. The NCAAs hands are tied since the NBA wont allow players to go straight to the pros.

I dont think OAD is even remotely a problem. People drop out of college to pursue other opportunities (or just even realizing college isnt for them) all the time.
I completely disagree. How often do you see athletes drop out early for something other than professional sports. I can't think of one example. We aren't saying this rule has to be broad spectrum. Just for men's basketball where the problem lies.

The NCAA's hands are tied because they are letting the NBA dictate what happens. They aren't doing anything about it. This would take the power from the NBA and back to the NCAA which in turn would also be a good start to correcting the image of the "student athlete"

Why are you guys so insecure? You have an outstanding team this year. I know a girl who is a Purdue grad and she isn't like you guys at all (thank goodness). These 'facts' you reference sound familiar. I remember all the 'facts' being mentioned for years. Then all of those 'facts' were not actually as they were reported by some. Being a former politician doesn't help your case here. I mean, they are the one group known the most for being dishonest and framing thing for their own selfish interests. So I would say the former governor is saying things not at all surprising, considering that is who he is.
Love this. Because he doesn't want to concede the facts, we are insecure, lol. How good our current team is doesn't change facts bub.

That rule is idiotic by Daniels. I fully believe if Purdue was one of the elite programs that could get the best talent they wouldn't be trying to sell this. Sorry you don't play for final fours and national titles....Kansas does the best of both worlds, we sprinkle in a one and done every once in a while with junior and senior laden teams, and I have absolutely no problem with what Kentucky and Duke are doing. I don't care what rule you implement the elite programs will always be the elite programs, playing fields will never be equal.
This isn't about bringing the elite down. This is about cleaning up the mess. NCAA standards for academics have become a laughing stock, people talking about paying players. All that would do is create a minor NBA league and that is where I would turn the TV off. I hate the NBA and I don't want college basketball going any more in that direction. NCAA sports need to get back to what it was meant to be. Student athletes going for an education. If they want to leave early, fine, there's no penalty for the player doing so. The school however has to ACT like a school (and not a D league) and it's scholarships will be tied up for a minimum of 3 years. IMO the overall product will be better. Look, Purdue is good now because they are a senior laden team. Just imagine how good the overall product will be if that happens year in and year out with every team.
