I think we're expected to finish in the bottom half of the B1G. If (big if, probably) we can get one or two guys to step up this year, we'll be top 5 in the B1G.

This is only the 3rd time Ku has been the pre-season #1. That’s a pretty crazy stat considering how often they’re a top 5 team.

Going by last seasons poll, I guess, you could say that the AP has no clue what they are doing when it comes to preseason rankings. 9 teams that were ranked to start the season, finished not ranked and 10 other teams dropped from their preseason ranking.
It's also pretty crazy since they pay pretty well.
I don't have a problem with the KY rank cause at least they have some returning players as well as some impressive upper classmen transfers.
Duke, OTOH, wouldn't be in my top 10 until/unless they can prove it. The whole starting lineup is freshman. No telling now how they are going to come together as a team.
Meanwhile, we have several teams ranked below them that are proven commodities. Tennessee, Gonzaga, Nevada, Kansas State, Virginia...those are all teams I would easily put ahead of Duke until Duke shows me something.
It's definitely difficult to rank us going into any given year. I get that our ranking is more of a projection based on potential (true for everyone in preseason polls, but especially us with our recruiting model), if they were ranking based on what we are today they probably wouldn't have us so high. But I get why they put us high to start most years.
Absolutely. UK has been there before, and I never liked being ranked highly without having proved squat. We do have some benefit of a few returning players, but I still want a lofty ranking to be earned.

I like having no expectations for the season because the opportunity to prove others wrong is better than having a high preseason ranking and blowing it.
